[Some experimental evidences for immune functions of interstitial plasma-cells of the submaxillary glands (author's transl)].

Interstitial plasma-like cells, constantly present in the submaxillary glands, are they endocrine cells or true plasma-cells? They do not show any change in case of hypertrophy of the salivary glands which is observed under isoproterenol repeated administration. In contrary their number increase greatly during the immunologic stimulation by human albumin injections in the Hamster cheek pouches. So, it does appear that they would be true plasma cells involved in immunoglobulins synthesis.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 with upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage and perforation: a case report and review.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare hereditary syndrome known to predispose subjects to endocrine neoplasms in a variety of tissues such as the parathyroid glands, pituitary gland, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. We herein report a patient with a past history of pituitary adenoma, presenting with symptoms of chronic diarrhea for nearly one year and a sudden upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage as well as perforation without signs. Nodules in the duodenum and in the uncinate process and tail of pancreas and enlargement of the parathyroid glands were detected on preoperative i

[Changes in the gastric mucosa in endocrine-cell cancer].

Mucous membrane from different parts of the stomach has been studied in 53 surgical cases of stomach carcinoma. All the tumours were subdivided into endocrine-cell (EC) and non-endocrine-cell. The background in all cases was chronic gastritis which was most pronounced at the border with tumour and in the pyloro-antral part of the stomach. Hyperplasia of the fundal glands with hyperfunction of the chief and lining cells, hypersecretion of foveal epithelium, pseudo-pyloric metaplasia and helicobacteriosis were more frequent in EC-carcinomas. Dysplastic epithelial changes in EC were found in the

Primary diffuse microscopical hyperplasia of the parathyroid glands: surgical importance.

In two of 182 patients with verified primary hyperparathyroidism, microscopical hyperplasia was present in all parathyroid glands that were normal in size or only slightly enlarged. All parathyroid glands in another two patients showed microscopical hyperplasia and varied from a normal size of 190 mg. In seven additional patients, microscopical hyperplasia was present in one, several, or all parathyroid glands, which varied in weight from normal to 350 mg. Familial hyperparathyroidism or multiple endocrine neoplasia was evident in five of 11 patients. Contributing to difficulties was the exper

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 presenting as insulinoma, gastrinoma, and postbulbar duodenal ulcers: report of a case.

We report herein the unusual case of a 55-year-old man with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 presenting as hyperparathyroidism, hyperpituitarism, insulinoma, and gastrinoma with postbulbar duodenal ulcers. The patient was referred to our hospital for further investigations of nephrolithiasis, acromegaly, and hematemesis. Laboratory studies showed high serum levels of calcium, parathyroid hormone, growth hormone, insulin, gastrin, and prolactin. Computed tomography of the cranial cavity demonstrated an enlargement of the serra turcica and swelling of two parathyroid glands in the neck. Compu

Endocrine complications of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a multisystem disorder characterized by defects in the immune system that result in opportunistic infections and neoplasms. While endocrine dysfunction has not been a prominent clinical feature of AIDS, all endocrine glands may be affected by the opportunistic infections and neoplasms or by agents used in their treatment. Adrenal cortical insufficiency related to cytomegalovirus and ketoconazole therapy, hypoglycemia related to pentamidine therapy, and hyponatremia secondary to diverse causes are the most serious endocrine abnormalities that commonl…

Advances in salivary gland gene therapy - oral and systemic implications.

INTRODUCTION: Much research demonstrates the feasibility and efficacy of gene transfer to salivary glands. Recently, the first clinical trial targeting a salivary gland was completed, yielding positive safety and efficacy results. AREAS COVERED: There are two major disorders affecting salivary glands: radiation damage following treatment for head and neck cancers and Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Salivary gland gene transfer has also been employed in preclinical studies using transgenic secretory proteins for exocrine (upper gastrointestinal tract) and endocrine (systemic) applications. Premature Ejaculation and Endocrine Disorders: A Literature Review.

Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common male sexual dysfunction, with 30% of men experiencing PE worldwide. According to the generally accepted classification, there are two types of PE: lifetime PE and acquired PE. Various biological and psychological causes are known to be involved in the etiology of PE. However, due to the incomplete definition and etiopathogenesis of PE, there is no effective treatment. Although clinical and animal studies indicate that hormones play a role in controlling the ejaculation process, the precise endocrine mechanisms are unclear. In addition, little is kn

Clinical pituitary disorders.

The pituitary gland is really a confederation of several relatively independent endocrine glands gathered together in close relationship to the hypothalamus which exerts considerable governing control. Each of these sub-glands of the pituitary should be considered separately in every case of pituitary disease. While such an approach is mandatory in dealing with laboratory investigation, it also is profitable in considering clinical and therapeutic aspects of each case to ensure that nothing is overlooked.

Familial Hyperparathyroidism: A Diagnostic and Treatment Challenge in Saudi Arabia.

Familial hyperparathyroidism is a rare, inherited endocrine disorder characterized by abnormally elevated serum calcium due to increased parathyroid hormone levels. In this case report, we present a two-day-old male newborn who was admitted with severe respiratory distress, hyperparathyroidism, and hypercalcemia with a family history of hyperparathyroidism in his two siblings, both diagnosed in childhood and treated with parathyroidectomy. He was diagnosed with familial hyperparathyroidism without other endocrinopathies. His left parathyroid glands were surgically removed, and post-operatively

Clinical characteristics of endocrinopathies in Chinese patients with hereditary haemochromatosis.

AIMS: Hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disorder characterised by systemic iron overload and can lead to end-organ failure. However, very few data on this disorder, especially those on endocrine gland involvement in Chinese populations, are currently available. This study aimed to analyse the clinical features of endocrinopathies in patients with HH to generate concern among endocrinologists and improve the management of this disorder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chinese patients with HH-related endocrine dysfunction were enrolled at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2

Clinical Characteristics, Management, and Potential Biomarkers of Endocrine Dysfunction Induced by Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors.

Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) affecting the endocrine glands are among the most frequent irAEs induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and include hypopituitarism, primary adrenal insufficiency, thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Since the incidence and clinical features of endocrine irAEs vary according to the ICI used, it is important to understand the characteristics of these irAEs and to manage each one appropriately. Since some endocrine irAEs, including adrenal crisis and diabetic ketoacidosis, are potentially life-threatening…

[Endocrine abnormalities in HIV-infected patients].

HIV infection is associated with a number of adverse consequences, including endocrine disorders. The endocrine changes associated with HIV infection have been studied in depth and, as the results of so far carried out studies suggest, their aetiology is usually multifactoral. Their pathogenesis includes direct infection of endocrine glands by HIV or opportunistic organisms, infiltration by neoplasms and adverse effects of drugs. Endocrine problems that most frequently affect this group of patients include: hypogonadism, adrenal insufficiency, thyroid disorders, impaired growth hormone release…

[Drug therapy of endocrine neoplasms. Part II: Malignant gastrinomas, insulinomas, glucagonomas, carcinoids and other tumors].

BACKGROUND: The thyroid gland and the adrenal glands are the most common sites of endocrine carcinomas (see Part I of this review, Med Klin 2000;95: 20-5, Nr. 1). Less frequent are endocrine malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract (gastrinomas, insulinomas, glucagonomas, carcinoids and others). TREATMENT: Because of the rarity and missing prospective studies as well as radiotherapy and chemotherapy resistance of these tumors, generally accepted conventional therapy guidelines for these endocrine carcinomas do not exist. Surgery and radionucleotide treatment should be considered as first li

Early detection of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasias (MENs) are a group of hereditary diseases involving multiple endocrine glands, and their prevalence is low. MEN type 1 (MEN1) has diverse clinical manifestations, mainly involving the parathyroid glands, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and pituitary gland, making it easy to miss the clinical diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: We present the case of a patient in whom MEN1 was detected early. A middle-aged male with recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhea was admitted to the hospital. Blood tests at admission revealed hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia, and emissi…

Carcinoma of two parathyroid glands caused by a novel MEN1 gene mutation - a rare feature of the MEN 1 syndrome.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) is a rare syndrome inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, characterized by combinations of tumors of the parathyroid glands, pituitary gland, and pancreatic islet cells and more rare tumors of endocrine organs and nonendocrine tissues. Germline mutations in the MEN1 gene are responsible for the MEN 1 syndrome, leading to an inactive form of menin protein. Benign lesions of the parathyroid glands are characteristic in patients with the MEN 1 syndrome; however, patients can develop parathyroid carcinomas very rarely. This report presents a clinica

Immunocytochemical localization of annexin 5, a calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding protein, in rat endocrine organs.

Annexin 5, a unique calcium- and phospholipid-binding protein, has been investigated for its specific distribution in rat endocrine organs by immunocytochemistry with a specific antiserum to recombinant rat annexin 5. Follicular epithelial cells and parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland, adrenocortical cells of the zona fasciculata and zona reticularis, luteal cells, testicular interstitial cells, and Sertoli cells were shown to contain annexin 5. To examine whether the synthesis of annexin 5 would be affected by a change in humoral signal, the distribution of annexin 5 in the anterior pit

Carney complex: A familial lentiginosis predisposing to a variety of tumors.

Carney complex is a familial lentiginosis syndrome; these disorders cover a wide phenotypic spectrum ranging from a benign inherited predisposition to develop cutaneous spots not associated with systemic disease to associations with several syndromes. Carney complex is caused by PRKAR1A mutations and perturbations of the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) signaling pathway. In addition to the cutaneous findings, the main tumors associated with Carney complex are endocrine: 1) primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease, a bilateral adrenal hyperplasia leading to Cushing syndrome; 2

[Incidental findings in endocrinology. When to observe and when intervention is necessary].

Hirsutism, gynecomastia or delayed puberty are usually benign conditions. However, underlying serious disorders must be excluded. Abnormalities in thyroid hormone measurements with contraceptives, glucocorticoids or severe nonthyroid disease must be differentiated from "true" impairments of thyroid function that require specific treatment. Increasingly, abnormalities are detected incidentally (incidentaloma) by diagnostic imaging procedures in organs such as the pituitary or the adrenal gland. Apart from judgements based on the original size of the tumor or the progression in size during obser
