Endodontic management of maxillary first molar with unusual anatomy.

This article reports nonsurgical endodontic management of bilateral maxillary first molars with an unusual morphology of a single root and a Sert and Bayirli type-IX canal configuration. A 41-year-old female reported with dull continuous pain in the maxillary left and right quadrants. On clinical examination, the maxillary first molars on both sides were carious with pulpal exposure and radiographic evaluation revealed an unusual anatomy of single root and single canal for both of them. Based on clinical and radiographic examination, tooth numbers 16 and 26 were diagnosed with symptomatic irre

Endodontic treatment of dentin dysplasia type I D.

Dentin dysplasia (DD) Type I is a developmental condition affecting dentin, inherited in an autosomal-dominant pattern or occurring due to a new mutation. Whilst the crowns of DD Type I affected teeth appear clinically normal, the roots are blunt and shortened. Pulp necrosis and periapical pathoses may be seen in the absence of obvious causes. Pulp stones and calcifications are frequently encountered. Endodontic management of DD may be challenging. A case of DD Type I, sub-classification d, in which spontaneous irreversible pulpitis developed on three mandibular incisors is documented. The cas

Manoeuvrability and biocompatibility of endodontic tricalcium silicate-based putties.

OBJECTIVES: The present study evaluated the indentation depth, storage modulus and biocompatibility of an experimental endodontic putty designed for endodontic perforation repair and direct pulp-capping (NeoPutty). The results were compared with the properties associated with the commercially available EndoSequence BC RRM Putty (ES Putty). METHODS: Indentation depth was measured by a profilometer following indentation with the 1/4 lb Gilmore needle. Elastic modulus was evaluated using a strain-controlled rheometer. The effects of eluents derived from these two putties were examined on the via

Latest Concepts in the Endodontic Management of Patients with Cardiovascular Disorders.

There are several cardiovascular interventions that need special considerations in the provision of treatments within the scope of endodontics. If these interventions are not carefully identified, diagnosed, and considered in the overall treatment plan for the patient, they may result in fatal conditions. These include hypertension that causes fatal cardiac disorders, such as angina pectoris, ischemic heart diseases, and myocardial infarction, and also cerebrovascular diseases; congestive heart failure; infective endocarditis, valvular diseases, and carrying pacemakers; and the use of antiplat…

Endodontic management of root perforating internal replacement resorption.

This case report presents the management of a case of rarely seen perforating internal replacement resorption using calcium hydroxide (CH) medication and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) root canal obturation. A maxillary central incisor of a 20-year-old female was showing a sinus track on the mucosa. Radiographically, an irregularly shaped and perforating internal resorption area was seen at the middle third of the root canal. Appearances of the bone-like fuzzy material were observed inside the resorption site. The apical part of the canal was obliterated. Following 3 months of CH medication,

Intraoperative endodontic applications of cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in endodontics for diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up has been extensively reported in the literature. Compared with the traditional spiral computed tomography, high-resolution limited CBCT results in a fraction of the effective absorbed dose of radiation. However, it should be prescribed only after weighing the cost of radiation exposure with the benefit of the diagnostic information that can be obtained from the scan. METHODS: The purpose of this article is to discuss the application and advantages of intraoperative CBC…

Rapid kill-novel endodontic sealer and Enterococcus faecalis.

With growing concern over bacterial resistance, the identification of new antimicrobial means is paramount. In the oral cavity microorganisms are essential to the development of periradicular diseases and are the major causative factors associated with endodontic treatment failure. As quaternary ammonium compounds have the ability to kill a wide array of bacteria through electrostatic interactions with multiple anionic targets on the bacterial surface, it is likely that they can overcome bacterial resistance. Melding these ideas, we investigated the potency of a novel endodontic sealer in limi

MicroRNAs: new insights into the pathogenesis of endodontic periapical disease.

INTRODUCTION: Apical periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the periradicular tissues caused by the host's immune response to infection of the root canal system. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been shown to play an important role in the regulation of inflammation and the immune response; however, their role in the pathogenesis of endodontic periapical disease has not been explored. The purpose of this study was to examine the differential expression of miRNAs in diseased periapical tissues as compared with healthy controls. METHODS: We first compared miRNA profiles in diseased periapical tissue

Central Giant Cell Granuloma: A potential endodontic misdiagnosis.

Central Giant Cell Granulomas (CGCGs) may manifest as radiolucencies anywhere in the mandible or maxilla. In rare cases, it can appear as a localized periradicular area and mimic an endodontic lesion. This case report presents an uncommon location of CGCG which was not accurately diagnosed nor timely treated. Periodic follow ups of periapical radiolucencies after RCT are necessary. Dentists should include CGCG in differential diagnosis of lesions that are refractory to endodontic treatment. [Iranian Endodontic Journal 2009;4(4):158-60].
