IMPORTANCE: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Preventive and therapeutic research, surveillance, and quality improvement initiatives are hindered by variations in case definitions.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a gestational age (GA)-specific case definition for NEC.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a prospective 34-month population study using clinician-recorded findings from the UK National Neonatal Research Database between December 2011 and September 2014 across all 163 neonatal units in England. We split study data into model de

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains elusive despite known associations with several factors, including intestinal ischemia related to the effects of umbilical arterial catheterization on the mesenteric circulation. However, the role of the mesenteric venous circulation has yet to be studied as a potential cause of NEC. We examined the association between umbilical venous catheter (UVC) position and the development of NEC in premature infants.
DESIGN: A prospective cohort study was performed to examine the effect of UVC on portosystemic shunting via the ductus ve

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between newborn acylcarnitine profiles and the subsequent development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) with the use of routinely collected newborn screening data in infants born preterm.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with the use of discharge records for infants born preterm admitted to neonatal intensive care units in California from 2005 to 2009 who had linked state newborn screening results. A model-development cohort of 94 110 preterm births from 2005 to 2008 was used to develop a risk-stratification model that was then a

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in neonates is devastating, and risk-factor identification is crucial. This study aimed to evaluate risk factors for NEC in different gestational age (GA) groups.
METHODS: Risk factors associated with NEC were investigated using a retrospective case-control design. Patients with Bell's Stage NEC≥II were divided into three groups based on GA: I, <34 weeks; II, ≥34 weeks but <37 weeks; III, ≥37 weeks. Each case was paired with two GA- and weight-matched controls. Data were collected from medical records, and univariate and conditional logistic regress

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening gastrointestinal disease in premature infants with high mortality and morbidity with uncertain pathogenesis. Recent research focused on the role of intraluminal bacteria and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). However, an additional role of viral agents in the pathogenesis of NEC has recently been postulated. We assessed the role of polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (pIC) mimicking viral dsRNA in contributing to the development of NEC in neonatal mice.
METHODS: Four-d-old C57BL/6J pups were stressed by asphyxia and hypothermia twice daily.

Common among preterm, very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a gastrointestinal, infectious disease that remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among this high-risk population. To combat this devastating condition, research efforts have been redirected from treatment toward prevention strategies. Although there are several proposed risk-reduction strategies, one intervention gaining support is the administration of prophylactic enteral probiotics. Regardless of growing evidentiary support and a benign safety pr

BACKGROUND: Citrulline, a nonprotein amino acid, is an intermediate of the urea cycle and synthesized in small intestine. Lower plasma citrulline levels were associated with reduced function of enterocytes. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) causes high morbidity and mortality, and leads impaired intestinal functions.
METHODS: Plasma citrulline levels of neonates with a gestational age <32 weeks and ≤1,500 gm who developed NEC stage II/III were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography.
RESULTS: We enrolled 36 preterm infants including 20 with NEC and 16 controls. Median citrulline lev

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze whether the mucosal innate immune response of extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants might play a role in the development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
METHODS: Between April 2008 and December 2009 antimicrobial peptides were prospectively measured in fecal samples of ELBW infants. In cases requiring abdominal surgery, full-thickness gut biopsies were analyzed for expression of human β-defensin 2 (hBD2), interleukin-8 (IL-8), villin, MD2, and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4).
RESULTS: Fecal hBD1 concentrations were consistently low in all

PURPOSE: There is scant epidemiological data on necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), so we conducted a national study to characterize prevalence, surgical management, and mortality.
METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional survey was performed in the United Kingdom requesting data from 158 level 2 and 3 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) during 2 winter and 2 summer months in 2005 to 2006; 51% of questionnaires were returned. Results are given as percentage with 95% confidence intervals.
RESULTS: (1) Period prevalence: 211 infants were diagnosed with NEC (45% Bell's stage I, 21% stage II, and 3

UNLABELLED: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious condition with a high morbidity and mortality commonly affecting premature babies. Data for the impact of the long-term disease burden in developing countries are limited although poor long-term outcome of surgically managed patients has been shown in terms of increased risk of neurodevelopmental delay, increased infectious disease burden and abnormal neurological outcomes in the developed world.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term outcome of a pre-human immunodeficiency virus pandemic NEC cohort to characterize common risk factors and o

BACKGROUND: The nosocomial occurrence of mycotic infections negatively affects results of the neonatal care in newborns in the sense of their increased mortality and morbidity.
AIM: The communication presented here is focused on an analysis of predisposing factors and clinical patterns of infections induced with mucormycosis strains. The authors provided an analysis of six case reports concerning newborns that died in association with nosocomial infections, where mucormycosis strains were microbiologically and microscopically detected in autopsy.
RESULTS: The newborns in the group considered

OBJECTIVE: In the past 5(1/2) years, 30 term or near-term neonates in the Intermountain Healthcare system developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) Bell's stage > or =II. We sought to identify possible explanations for why these patients developed NEC, by comparing them with 5847 others that did not develop NEC, from the same hospitals and of the same gestational ages, cared for during the same 5 1/2-year period.
STUDY DESIGN: Data were collected from neonates admitted to any of the Intermountain Healthcare NICUs with a birth date from 1 January 2001 to 30 June 2006, and a gestational age >36

We describe an outbreak of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) that occurred in the neonatal intensive care unit of our hospital. A total of 12 neonates developed NEC in June-July 1998. For two of them, twin brothers, the NEC turned out to be fatal. Enterobacter sakazakii, a known contaminant of powdered milk formula, was isolated from a stomach aspirate, anal swab, and/or blood sample for 6 of the 12 neonates. A review of feeding procedures revealed that 10 of the 12 patients were fed orally with the same brand of powdered milk formula. E. sakazakii was isolated from the implicated prepared formu

Three cases of double left colic stenosis revealed at one month of age by subobstruction are reported. Recovery was obtained by surgery. The evolution of radiological data in one case, and of histological changes observed on the resected sigmoid colon in the two other cases favor the assumption that cicatricial stenosis occurred likewise. These cases also confirm the existence of a benign expression of necrotising enterocolitis, most common with a colonic localization. Such stenosis due to submucous connective sclerosis strengthens the hypothesis that a transitory mesenteric ischemia is respon

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of serious gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases in newborn infants, with a high morbidity and mortality. Red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) plays a controversial and doubtful role in the treatment of NEC. In present study, we aim to analyze the association between RBCT and the deterioration of NEC.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of near-term and full-term infants with a confirmed diagnosis of Bell's stage II NEC between Jan 1, 2010 and Jan 31, 2020. The maternal and infant baseline characteristics, treatment information and l

BACKGROUND: Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most life-threatening gastrointestinal emergencies in preterm infants. Accumulating evidence has identified gut microbiota dysbiosis as a key driver of NEC pathogenesis. Probiotics/prebiotics and bioactive components in breast milk can reduce NEC risk by modulating microbiota balance. With microbial intervention strategies becoming a research hotspot, publications in this field have surged over the past 5 years. However, no studies have yet systematically mapped its knowledge evolution and collaboration networks.

BACKGROUND: Formula feeding is associated with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening gastrointestinal illness affecting premature infants. The presence of undigested fat in enteral formula may mediate NEC severity. The immobilized lipase cartridge (ILC) is an FDA-cleared digestive device that hydrolyzes triglyceride fat in formula into readily absorbable free fatty acids and monoglycerides. We hypothesized that use of a new ILC prototype designed to support increased feeding frequency in infants will reduce NEC mortality and disease severity in a murine model.
METHODS: NEC was i

IMPORTANCE: Probiotics are reported to benefit preterm infants, but population-based clinical evidence is limited. In 2020, the Swedish Neonatal Society issued a national recommendation to supplement very preterm infants (28 weeks 0 days' to 31 weeks 6 days' gestation) with probiotics.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether probiotic supplementation was associated with risk of death, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and/or culture-proven sepsis in infants born very preterm.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study examined data from the Swedish Neonatal Quality Regist
