Bagassosis: an epidemiological, environmental, and clinical survey.

An epidemiological and environmental survey of 170 bagasse workers employed by a raw sugar producing company in Trinidad was carried out in order to assess the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and to determine if exposure to bagasse was associated with alterations in ventilatory capacity. The epidemiological survey failed to reveal a significantly increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms in the more exposed group but showed that the group of Indian workers who were regularly and continuously exposed to bagasse had a significantly lower ventilatory capacity than the control group. This di

Understanding environmental adaptation in intermediate wheatgrass.

Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG; Thinopyrum intermedium) is a perennial grain crop that offers many environmental benefits through extensive root systems in addition to food production. IWG's distribution across broad environmental gradients in Eurasia provides a model system for studying climate adaptation genetics essential for developing climate-resilient varieties, and exploring this can help provide opportunities for allele mining and population improvement for breeding programs. Genome-environment association methods were used to explore 296 georeferenced accessions genotyped with 17,797 si

Genetic and environmental risk factors of Parkinsonism.

Parkinsonian disorders comprise a broad spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases with a wide variety of pathogenetic processes. These processes lead to the formation of pathological proteins, resulting in the brain diseases called synucleinopathies, tauopathies or TDP-43 proteinopathies. There is currently growing support for the hypothesis that genetic variants explain a significant fraction of the etiology of apparently sporadic parkinsonian disorders. Genetic risk factors can be stratified according to the metabolic or structural processes that can lead to cellular disturbance; these processe

Early environmental determinants of childhood asthma.

The global prevalence of childhood asthma has undergone profound shifts, marked by a late-20th-century plateau in Western nations and a rapidly emerging epidemic across many developing countries. Traditional risk factors, such as air pollution, allergen exposure, and viral infections-fail to fully explain these trends. Instead, many birth cohorts and migrant studies strongly implicate changing early-life environments. Grounded in the hygiene and biodiversity hypotheses, this review explores the critical environmental determinants of childhood asthma. We synthesize global epidemiological data h

Environmental Context of Hominin Foot Evolution.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the environmental contexts that influenced the evolution of hominin foot morphology, focusing on when, where, and under what conditions key synapomorphies evolved. We test whether shifts in ecological conditions are associated with changes in locomotor function. METHODS: We used phylogenetic and biogeographical analyses with paleoenvironmental data to evaluate the relationships between foot morphology and environmental context. Phylogenetic trees were inferred using the fossilized birth-death model and time-calibrated. Multiple topologies were used to explo

Environmental Concerns for Children in Humanitarian Crises.

Children in humanitarian settings may be exposed to toxic substances (eg, lead, mercury, fluoride, pesticides, tobacco, and carbon monoxide) through inadequate housing, polluted indoor air and water, or being located near industrial sites. They may become ill after ingesting contaminated food (such as cassava containing cyanide) or being sprayed with chemicals dispersed from airplanes. Children who are refugees from war also may be exposed to environmental contaminants such as depleted uranium. As the climate changes, more children will live with extreme heat. Pediatric clinicians should be aw

Toward Environmentally Responsive Hypersound Materials.

Engineering gigahertz (GHz) acoustic phonons holds promise for data processing, sensing, and quantum technologies. However, conventional nanophononic resonators lack adaptability to environmental changes. We introduce an open-cavity nanoacoustic resonator built from mesoporous SiO2 thin films (MTFs), whose ordered nanopores make them intrinsically sensitive to humidity. Transient reflectivity measurements reveal pronounced resonance frequency shifts with varying relative humidity, providing a straightforward means to tune the hypersound confinement. Systematic comparisons across pore sizes and

Childhood Environmental Exposures and Adult Disease.

The association of early life adverse events with worse adult outcomes was first proposed by David Barker, the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). Subsequently we have learned that adverse exposures are not merely important during pregnancy, but also exert transgenerational effects. Most of our knowledge derives from studies of nicotine and tobacco exposure. Adverse intrauterine exposures lead to low birth weight and premature delivery; altered airway and parenchymal structure; altered immune function; sensitization to later adverse exposures; and premature aging manifest by p

Environmental VOC exposure and mental health.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major atmospheric pollutants with potential neurotoxic effects, yet their impacts on population-level mental health remain understudied. Here, we develop an integrative framework that combines the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, epidemiological analysis, and network toxicology to assess the mental health risks of ambient VOC exposure across China. We simulated the spatiotemporal distribution of 33 VOC species at a 36 km × 36 km resolution using CMAQ, driven by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Ground-based observations and sa

Environmental risk factors and cardiovascular health.

Environmental risk factors-air pollution, noise, heat, chemical contamination, and light pollution-are increasingly recognized as key contributors to cardiovascular disease but remain underrepresented in clinical guidelines and public health strategies. This comprehensive review, developed under the auspices of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), synthesizes current evidence on the cardiovascular consequences of environmental exposures. Building on prior ESC recommendations on air pollution, the consensus statement extends the focus to include climate change, urban heat islands, chemical

Environmental toxins in neurodegeneration - a narrative review.

As the global incidence of neurodegenerative disorders rises at a rate beyond what can be attributed solely to population aging, the role of modifiable risk factors has come into research spotlight to inform preventive strategies. While many lifestyle interventions can be implemented at an individual level, addressing environmental pollutants that drive neurodegeneration requires a collective effort involving both public and political engagement. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the role of selected environmental toxins-pesticides, solvents, air pollution, and heavy metals-

Effects of Environmental Pollutants on Tryptophan Metabolism.

Tryptophan (Trp) is an important essential amino acid that plays a variety of physiological functions in the human body, including being a precursor of neurotransmitter and participating in immune regulation. Currently, more and more studies show that some pollutants in the environment can affect the metabolism of Trp and consequently affect human health. The present paper offers a comprehensive overview of prior research investigating the impact of environmental pollutants, including inorganic and organic contaminants, microplastics, and nanoplastics on the nervous system, immune system, dige
