Modelling cholera epidemics: the role of waterways, human mobility and sanitation.

We investigate the role of human mobility as a driver for long-range spreading of cholera infections, which primarily propagate through hydr … transport of V. cholerae, thus playing a key role in the formation of regional patterns of cholera epidemics. We also show quantitatively how heterogeneously distributed drinking water supplies and sanitation conditions may affect large-scale cholera transmission, and analyse the effects of different sanitation policies.

Epidemiologic links between drug use and HIV epidemics: an international perspective.

Injecting use of heroin has been the highest risk substance use behavior for HIV since the beginning of the pandemic. These risks extend bey … now emerging in Africa. The dearth of targeted, evidence-and human rights-based responses to these epidemics is explored as a structural driver of HIV spread in these settings.

Cryptosporidium parvum causes gastroenteritis epidemics in the Nablus region of Palestine.

A total of 30 faecal samples collected from individuals admitted to a local hospital in Nablus city in Palestine with gastroenteritis symptoms, plus five faecal samples from healthy individuals living in the same area were screened for the presence of Cryptosporidium spp. by microscopic analysis using malachite green negative staining. Molecular techniques were used to confirm the microscopic identification. All 30 samples from individuals with gastroenteritis symptoms were positive by both techniques. No other parasites were found in the faecal material of patients or healthy individuals. To

[Meningococcal W135 infection epidemics associated with pilgrimage to Mecca in 2000].

OBJECTIVES: On April 3 and 7, 2000, four cases of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W135 infection were diagnosed in France in Raj pilgrims and their close relatives. Two cases were fatal. Due to the rarity of this strain in France, a strain belonging to a clonal complex implicated in several epidemics in Europe and North America, and it high mortality observed, The French General Direction of Heal issued recommendations on April 8th for rifampicin chemotherapy for all pilgrims and relatives living in their home. The national disease watch (Institut de Veille Sanitaire, InVS) conducted an inves…

[Epidemics of cutaneous leishmaniasis in military personnel working in French Guiana].

Cutaneous leishmaniasis transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies is endemic in the rain forests of French Guyana. The 3rd Régiment Etranger d'Infanterie, based in Kourou carries out numerous operations in the Amazonian areas. In 1998 two outbreaks of cutaneous leishmaniasis occurred: one during an exercise at the training center in the equatorial forest of Regina (10 patients) and the other during a mission in Saint Elie (21 patients). Clinical findings were variable and diagnosis was confirmed by skin smear tests. Patients were treated by two intramuscular injections of pentmidine isethionate (P

Detection of epidemics in their early stage through infectious disease surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of infectious diseases is done in many countries. The aims of such surveillance include the detection of epidemics. In the present study, the possibility of detecting an epidemic in its early stage using a simple method was evaluated for 16 infectious diseases. METHODS: We used as an index the number of cases per week per sentinel medical institution in the area covered by a health centre in infectious disease surveillance in Japan in 1993-1997. Periods of epidemics in health centre areas were determined according to the reported indices. The simple method used for de…

Strategies for the emergency control of arboviral epidemics in New Orleans.

A study was initiated to evaluate the effectiveness of aerial ULV spraying for the control of Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus as an emergency antiepidemic measure against dengue fever and St. Louis encephalitis, respectively. Malathion was aerially applied at 219 ml/ha over 344 ha area of the Ninth Ward in New Orleans. Laboratory susceptibility tests and field-cage exposures indicated that the target populations were susceptible to malathion and that acceptable coverage of the study area occurred. Two consecutive aerial applications decreased the relative abundance and ovipositional a
