Twenty-first century epidemiology of dyslipidemia in Greece: EMENO national epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Greece was recently reclassified from low- to medium-risk country in terms of cardiovascular disease, with 27% of cardiovascular deaths attributed to hypercholesterolemia. EMENO nationwide survey (2013-2016) assessed the epidemiology of dyslipidemia in the general population in Greece. METHODS: A random sample of adults was drawn by multistage stratified random sampling based on 2011 census. Standardized questionnaires and blood tests for total cholesterol (TC), low-density (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides were used. Hypercholesterolemia

Epidemiology and survival in patients with carcinoid disease in The Netherlands. An epidemiological study with 2391 patients.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoid tumours are rare malignant neuroendocrine tumours. In 1992 octreotide was introduced in the Netherlands as a palliative treatment for the carcinoid syndrome in metastatic carcinoid disease. The aims of this epidemiological study were to evaluate epidemiological data and the impact of octreotide on survival in metastatic carcinoid disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1989 and 1996, 2391 patients with carcinoid disease were diagnosed in the Netherlands. Survival data from two Registries were available in 619 patients, diagnosed between 1980 and 1997. RESULTS: Between 19

The epidemiology of social phobia: findings from the Duke Epidemiological Catchment Area Study.

Social phobia was studied in a North Carolina community, using DSM-III criteria. Two kinds of comparison were made: social phobia v. non-social phobia, and comorbid social phobia v. non-comorbid social phobia. Six-month and lifetime prevalence rates were 2.7 and 3.8% respectively. Social phobia had an early onset, lasted a long time and rarely recovered. Predictors of good outcome recovery in a logistic regression analysis were onset of phobia after age 11, absence of psychiatric comorbidity and greater education. The disorder was often missed in medical consultation. Increased rates of psychi

A Review of Epidemiological Modeling Studies on Monkeypox.

Between 2022 and 2025, nearly 130,000 confirmed monkeypox (mpox) cases, including over 280 deaths, were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from 130 countries and territories, prompting the WHO to declare it a public health emergency of international concern on two occasions. Hence, to enable a scientific approach to prevention and control, transmission dynamics through mathematical modeling must be elucidated. Through a comprehensive literature review on the modeling of mpox transmission dynamics, this study indicates that existing research primarily extends the susceptible-infect

The Epidemiology of Snakebite in Bhutan: A Retrospective Study.

Bhutan is a tropical country where snakebite is supposedly common, but official data are scanty and unmethodical. Deaths from snakebites were reported from areas where snakebites are common. Four-year (2018-2021) data of snakebite from 45 Bhutanese hospitals were collected and analysed to describe the burden and map by districts. A total of 371 snakebites were recorded from 45 hospitals during the 4 years. Most cases were seen in the southern and central parts of the country. There was a definite rise in the number of cases in the warmer months, starting from March and peaking between June and

Acetabular fracture in India: An epidemiological study.

INTRODUCTION: Acetabular fractures, resulting from high-energy trauma, present significant orthopaedic challenges. Despite their rarity, the incidence of these fractures is rising, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of their epidemiological characteristics, especially in diverse populations like India. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from 3643 patients across four level-1 trauma centers in India (North 1, North 2, West, and South) from January 2001 to December 2019. Prior ethical approval was obtained from the respective institutions. Data were collected using the com

Epidemiological study of toxoplasmosis outbreaks in Brazil.

In Brazil, notification of toxoplasmosis outbreaks and epidemiological investigation is a mandatory activity of health surveillance. We investigated the risk factors for toxoplasmosis during outbreaks, notifications of outbreaks by the health secretary and reports in the literature. Other factors related to the municipalities were determined through the Institute of Geography and Statistics portal. We found that fruits and vegetables were the most described transmission routes in outbreaks, and oocysts were the most common parasitic form; in recent years; there has been an increase in outbreak

Diabetes Mellitus and Tinnitus: an Epidemiology Study.

Objectives: Tinnitus is the perception of sound that does not arise from an external source. It is a chronic sensation that virtually all would prefer not to experience, but for most people it is not disabling and treatments for disturbing tinnitus are limited. Diabetes causes several side effects, among which its impact on the neural system is one of the most important ones. Considering that the hearing system is part of the neural system, this paper investigates the likelihood of tinnitus occurrence and its potential role of risk factor in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Metho

Epidemiological study of Lyme disease in Bulgaria.

OBJECTIVES: Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis) is a transmissible infection, common in the temperate climate zones. It is caused by a group of spirochetal bacteria known as Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. The aim of the present work was to investigate the incidence rate of borreliosis in different regions of Bulgaria and to identify possible risk factors for its occurrence. METHODS: National and regional borreliosis incidence rates for 2009-2018 were obtained from the public database of the National Centre of Public Health and Analyses. Their association with some socio-demographic vari

Epidemiologic study of orthodontic retention procedures.

INTRODUCTION: The aims of this study were to survey current retention procedures applied by Dutch orthodontists and to examine their acquaintance with "unintentionally active retainers." METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to all 306 Dutch orthodontists involved in patient treatment. Questions were clustered in 4 parts: (1) general information, (2) retention procedures, (3) characteristics of wire materials for bonded retainers, and (4) acquaintance with "unintentionally active retainers." RESULTS: The response rate was 98%. The most applied retention modality in the maxillary arch was a combi

A nationwide study of the epidemiology of relapsing polychondritis.

OBJECTIVE: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune inflammatory disease that attacks mainly cartilaginous structures or causes serious damage in proteoglycan-rich structures (the eyes, heart, blood vessels, inner ear). This study shows results regarding the epidemiology, progression, and associations of this highly variable disease by collecting all cases from a 124-million-person-year Central European nationwide cohort. METHODS: We used the Hungarian Health Care Database to identify all persons with possible RP infection. We followed patients who had International Classification o

Epidemiological study of cholesteatoma in Fukuoka City.

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: To investigate the pathogenesis of cholesteatoma, we planned to conduct a cohort study. As a first step, we conducted an epidemiological study in Fukuoka City, Japan to determine the incidence of cholesteatoma treated both with and without surgery. We also conducted a case-control study to investigate the pathogenesis of cholesteatoma. RESULTS: The annual incidence of cholesteatoma, including cases treated without surgery, was 6.8-10.0 in a population of 100 000. The results of the case-control study suggested that a past history of otitis media and habitual sniffing cau
