[The significance of CT measurement of craniopharyngeal cavity in healthy person].

OBJECTIVE: In order to investigate where is the most part in upper airway of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The craniopharyngeal cavity in 50 healthy persons was measured by CT. METHOD: The 50 volunteers were instructed on supine position. The Scanning was made taken with SCT-7000 spiral computer (Philips company Holland). Scanning was from cupular part of nasopharyngeal cavity to an apex of epiglottis cartilage on the datum line of lower eye socket, every stratum was 5 mm, every lamella distance was 8 mm. Scanned and took photographs up and down using RIO-MAN key (Reg…

Evaluation of a curved surgical prototype in a human larynx.

PURPOSE: It is not always possible to create linear access to the larynx using a rigid operating laryngoscope for microlaryngoscopy. In this study, we evaluate the usability of a novel curved surgical prototype with flexible instruments for the larynx (sMAC) in a simulation dummy and human body donor. METHODS: In a user study (n = 6), head and neck surgeons as well as medical students tested the system for visualization quality and accessibility of laryngeal landmarks on an intubation dummy and human cadaver. A biopsy of the epiglottis was taken from the body donor. Photographic and time docu…

Epiglottic abscess: a rare cause of odynophagia.

Epiglottic abscess is rare sequelae of acute epiglottitis. It occurs commonly in adult although acute epiglottitis commonly occur in children. The presentation includes fever with odynophagia. The diagnosis is based on high index of suspicion especially when oral examinations reveal normal findings. We report a case of adult epiglottic abscess which was treated with incision and drainage. The outline of management was discussed.

[Hemorrhage from the valleculae].

We present the case of a 77-year-old man with oral hemorrhage and blood clots, with no cough or vomiting. A varicose lesion in the valleculae was established as the source of bleeding. The condition of the patient was haemodynamically unstable. The bleeding was successfully controlled through suture and diathermy. From that time, there have been no further episodes of bleeding.

Epiglottic abscess.

BACKGROUND: Epiglottitis is more commonly seen in children less than 6 years of age, although this entity has also been well described among adults. A coalescence of infection of the epiglottis, or epiglottic abscess, has been infrequently reported in series of epiglottitis. Risk factors for epiglottic abscess include adult age at onset, diabetes, and the presence of a foreign body. METHODS: Case study. RESULTS: We present a case of a woman with a 4-day history of febrile illness, odynophagia, and an altered voice. Clinical examination and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated an epiglottic …

Radiographic assessment of epiglottic length and pharyngeal and laryngeal diameters in the Thoroughbred.

A lateral radiograph of the pharyngeal region provides a technique for identifying pharyngeal disorders, including entrapment of the epiglottic cartilage and dorsal displacement of the soft palate. Epiglottic cartilage length, predicted from radiographs by measurement from the body of the thyroid cartilage to the tip of the epiglottis (thyroepiglottic length), was well correlated to actual length at postmortem examination (r2 = 0.98). Thyroepiglottic length, corrected for magnification, was 8.76 +/- 0.44 cm in 24 healthy Thoroughbreds. Nine Thoroughbreds with entrapment of the epiglottic carti…

[Refractory thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura revealing an epiglotis neoplasia].

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a thrombotic microangiopathy with neurological disorder which incidence is relatively rare. Since the discovery of the ADAMTS 13 in 1996 and the changes in the treatment (plasma exchanges and rituximab), the prognosis of the TTP has considerably improved. We report the case of a 60-year-old man with a refractory TTP. The subsequent discovery of an epiglottis neoplasia and its treatment saved the patient.

When a snore means more.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was first identified in the early 1960s. It is likely to have been affecting adults for thousands of years, due to an anatomical feature in humans that makes us different from other mammals. The oropharynx, the space between the uvula and the epiglottis, is unique to humans and is responsible in part for our ability to speak. It is the space where the tongue and the uvula meet to obstruct the upper airway.

Conductive deafness in aglossia.

Aglossia is a rare anomaly often accompanied with several congenital defects including varying degrees of limb deficiency, micrognathia and oral synechiae. We report on a girl with aglossia and persistent anterior buccopharyngeal membrane. Other anomalies observed on the patient were oesophageal atresia, hypoplastic epiglottis, ptosis of the left eyelid, and conductive deafness which is probably an additional symptom of this syndrome group.

Pedunculated squamous papilloma of the laryngopharynx.

Pedunculated squamous papillomas usually arise from the soft palate, tonsil or the epiglottis. These lesions can sometimes prove to be fatal. A case of pedunculate squamous papilloma, arising from the laryngopharynx, in a young, mentally retarded female, is presented here. The clinical presentation, the site of origin and the size of the lesion were quite unusual. The narrow base of the pedicle made the intra-oral excision possible.

Epiglottitis in Patients Treated for Acute Leukemia: Case Series and Systematic Review of the Literature.

<p>Introduction: Acute epiglottitis is a medical emergency characterized by inflammation of supraglottic structures of the larynx and epiglottis. The clinical characteristics and course of this complication in acute leukemia (AL) are largely unknown. We present a case series and a systematic review of the literature of adult patients with AL and acute epiglottitis. Case Presentation: Four patients with acute myeloid leukemia (age 38-61 years) were diagnosed with acute epiglottitis during their intensive treatment course. One patient presented with epiglottitis at the end of induction, two at t…

Histomorphology of the lower respiratory tract in the Indian crested porcupine (Hystrix indica).

The Indian crested porcupine (Hystrix indica) (ICP) is widely distributed in Asia; however, compared with other rodents, little is known abo … including the presence of a chamber-like structure at the origin of the bronchi and a difference in epiglottis shape between males and females. Histologically, the stratified squamous epithelium covered the epiglottis and arytenoid cartilage, and the pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium covered the internal part of the thyroid and cricoid cartilages …
