Disinfection protocols for necropsy equipment in rabies laboratories: Safety of personnel and diagnostic outcome.

In the last decades, molecular techniques have gradually been adopted for the rapid confirmation of results obtained through gold standard methods. However, international organisations discourage their use in routine laboratory investigations for rabies post-mortem diagnosis, as they may lead to false positive results due to cross-contamination. Cleaning and disinfection are essential to prevent cross-contamination of samples in the laboratory environment. The present study evaluated the efficacy of selected disinfectants on rabies-contaminated necropsy equipment under organic challenge using

Microplastics and PMT plastic-associated chemicals as co-contaminants in ice shaving waste from an urban ice rink.

Ice hockey, curling, and skating are popular recreational activities across Canada's nearly 8000 ice rinks, yet potential contamination of rink ice shaving waste remains understudied. This study investigated the presence of emerging contaminants, including microplastics and persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) plastic-associated chemicals as co-contaminants in ice shaving from the Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens) located in the City of Toronto. Microplastics were detected at high concentrations ranging from 59 to 2063 particles per 100 mL of melted ice shaving, with particl

Pilot study: External surface contamination of gemcitabine and 5-fluorouracil on drug packaging.

INTRODUCTION: Antineoplastic drugs (ADs) are commonly used pharmaceuticals for anticancer treatments. It has previously been shown that the external surface of drug vials frequently is contaminated with ADs. More than a decade ago methods to prevent occupational exposure were introduced by using plastic coverage of the glass vials or packing vials in a secondary plastic container. The aim of the pilot study was to determine contamination levels of ADs on different parts of AD packaging of two different commercially available drug vials on the Swedish market and to investigate the occurrence of

Contamination profiles of Escherichia coli and enterococci in steamed chicken meat products.

This study determined the sources of contamination by Escherichia coli and enterococci in frozen ready-to-eat chicken products. The efficiency of the heat treatment process was sufficient to eliminate E. coli or enterococci. However, the prevalence of E. coli and enterococci in cooked chicken after chilling was 2.7%, and after slicing and dicing it was 1.3 and 9.3%, respectively. These results indicated that contamination occurred after cooking. In the finished product, E. coli was absent, while enterococcus prevalence was reduced to 1.3%. The environment at each production step, such as the m

Characterizing the rapid spread of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) through an animal food manufacturing facility.

New regulatory and consumer demands highlight the importance of animal feed as a part of our national food safety system. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is the first viral pathogen confirmed to be widely transmissible in animal food. Because the potential for viral contamination in animal food is not well characterized, the objectives of this study were to 1) observe the magnitude of virus contamination in an animal food manufacturing facility, and 2) investigate a proposed method, feed sequencing, to decrease virus decontamination on animal food-contact surfaces. A U.S. virulent PEDV

Evaluating the efficacy of reprocessing contaminated single use devices for re-use in intensive care unit in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Single use devices (SUDs) are designed for single use. However, in low-income countries, they are often reprocessed and reused. Because these devices are intended for single use, no standardized protocol for reprocessing these devices currently exists. We developed a protocol for reprocessing SUDs in low-income settings and assessed the efficacy of this protocol in eliminating bacterial burden from a subset of used respiratory SUDs. METHODS: Reprocessing of these devices was conducted in accordance with the National IPC reference manual with minor modifications. The surfaces of us

Bathroom contamination by antibiotic-resistant Enterobacterales (ESBLPE and CPE): an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBLPE) and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) cause serious infections. Their presence in urine may lead to environmental contamination potentially responsible for cross-transmission. AIM: To evaluate the level of spraying and contamination after emptying urine in the toilet and rinsing in the sink, a common practice in the healthcare setting. METHODS: For each test, the procedure was similar: seat raised, emptying urinal bottle into the toilet at the height of the bowl, rinsing in the sink and flushing. To st

Humidifiers for oxygen therapy: what risk for reusable and disposable devices?

INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial pneumonia accounts for the vast majority of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). Although numerous medical devices have been discussed as potential vehicles for microorganisms, very little is known about the role played by oxygen humidifiers as potential sources of nosocomial pathogens. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the safety of the reuse of humidifiers by analysing the rate of microbial contamination in reusable and disposable oxygen humidifiers used during therapy, and then discuss their potential role in the transmission of respiratory pathogens.

Forensic application of microbiological culture analysis to identify mail intentionally contaminated with Bacillus anthracis spores.

The discovery of a letter intentionally filled with dried Bacillus anthracis spores in the office of a United States senator prompted the collection and quarantine of all mail in congressional buildings. This mail was subsequently searched for additional intentionally contaminated letters. A microbiological sampling strategy was used to locate heavy contamination within the 642 separate plastic bags containing the mail. Swab sampling identified 20 bags for manual and visual examination. Air sampling within the 20 bags indicated that one bag was orders of magnitude more contaminated than all th

Disinfection and Sterilization in Health Care Facilities: An Overview and Current Issues.

All invasive procedures involve contact by a medical device or surgical instrument with a patient's sterile tissue or mucous membranes. The level of disinfection is dependent on the intended use of the object: critical, semicritical, or noncritical. New issues and practices can affect the risk of infection associated with devices and surfaces. Endoscopes continue to represent a nosocomial hazard. The contaminated surface environment in hospital rooms is important in the transmission of health care-associated pathogens. Thoroughness of cleaning must be monitored and no-touch room decontaminatio

A method for quantifying key components of the opening process for opening pouch-style packages containing medical devices.

Healthcare-associated infections are a serious worldwide health concern. Although contaminated medical devices are an avenue for infection, little research has evaluated the techniques used to open sterile packages. The goal of this study was to develop a method to quantify aspects of the package opening process in accordance with opening guidelines and then to demonstrate this methodology through a small sample of clinicians opening two sizes of pouch-style packages. Using motion capture techniques, a method was designed to quantify 11 parameters associated with the opening process. The metho
