Ninety-eight consecutive clinical isolates of Legionella pneumophila were tested for erythromycin, rifampicin and ciprofloxacin susceptibility. MICs, determined by agar dilution testing, were in the range 0.06-1 mg/L of erythromycin, 0.007-0.015 mg/L of rifampicin and 0.015-0.03 mg/L of ciprofloxacin. No resistance against the antibiotics tested was detected. It is thus likely that therapeutic failures in legionnaires' disease are not related to the emergence of resistance against commonly used antimicrobial agents.

One hundred and eighty-nine adults with acute pharyngitis had culture and serological evaluation for group A beta haemolytic streptococci (GABHS), Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Branhamella catarrhalis. It is recommended that the Hottinger agar medium with polymyxin or erythromycin be used for isolation of pure cultures of the plague microbe from specimens containing various species of microorganisms, except Proteus. Such a procedure was used in the Kizil-Kum for the bacteriological examinations with respect to plague. The procedure may be used in the natural foci with the strains resistant to these antibiotics.

The penetration of oral erythromycin stearate (Abboticin), administered in a dosage of 500 mg three times a day, into the maxillary sinus mucosa and secretion was studied in 15 patients (22 sinuses) operated on for chronic maxillary sinusitis. The average concentration in serum was 2.3 microgram/ml, 1.2 microgram/ml in secretion, and 1.8 microgram/ml in mucosa. These concentrations are highly effective against diplococci and most aerobic and anaerobic streptococci (MIC value 0.06 microgram/ml) but not against Haemophilus influenzae (MIC value for 80% of 2 microgram/ml).

Erythromycin was found to be a more effective inhibitor of gram-negative bacilli in alkaline medium than in neutral or acid medium. A definite effect was noted with all of 500 recent clinical isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella-Enterobacter, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus mirabilis studied, but it was most striking with E. coli. At pH 8.5 all strains, except for 14% of those of P. mirabilis, were inhibited by concentrations of erythromycin readily achieved in urine with common therapeutic doses.
