Ethics in social science experimentation and data collection are often discussed but rarely articulated in writing as part of research outputs. Although papers typically reference human subjects research approvals from relevant institutional review boards, most recognize that such boards do not carry out comprehensive ethical assessments. We propose a structured ethics appendix to provide details on the following: policy equipoise, role of the researcher, potential harms to participants and nonparticipants, conflicts of interest, intellectual freedom, feedback to participants, and foreseeable

Women with opioid use disorder (OUD) face unique challenges meeting their reproductive goals. Because the rate of unintended pregnancy in this population is almost 80 percent, there has been a push to increase the use of contraceptives among reproductive-aged women with OUD.1 The patient-level ethical issues of such initiatives, however, are often overlooked. This review discusses the ethical issues in two realms: obtaining contraception when it is desired and avoiding contraceptive coercion when contraception is not desired. It is important that access to reproductive education and care be im

The human repeated insult patch test (HRIPT) is over half a century old, but is still used in several countries as a confirmatory test in the safety evaluation of skin sensitizers. This is despite the criticism it receives from an ethical perspective and regarding the scientific validity of such testing. In this commentary, the HRIPT is reviewed, with emphasis on ethical aspects and where the test can, and cannot, contribute in a scientifically meaningful manner to safety evaluation. It is concluded that where there is a specific rationale for testing, for example, to substantiate a no-effect

Parental counseling becomes complex when considering the use of emerging technologies, especially if it is unclear whether the level of evidence is sufficient to transform the proposed therapy into accepted practice. This paper addresses ethical issues underlying medical decision-making and counseling in the setting of emerging treatments, when long-term outcomes are still in the process of being fully validated. We argue that the ethical transition of emerging technologies, ideally from ethically impermissible to permissible, to obligatory, depends primarily on two factors: outcome data (or p

OBJECTIVE: Assisted dying is a highly complex and evolving ethical area in the United Kingdom (UK) healthcare, with ongoing legislative developments creating urgency. UK medical students, potentially the first generation to navigate its legalisation, face an inconsistent curriculum. This review examined the inclusion and quality of assisted dying education in UK undergraduate medical schools, analysing curricular extent and alignment with General Medical Council (GMC) end-of-life care expectations.
METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted. Searches of PubMed and Scopus (2004-2025)

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recurrent deliberate foreign body ingestion (DFBI) is a high-risk, resource-intensive behavior most often associated with underlying psychiatric conditions. Although medical and surgical complications are well documented, the psychiatric drivers and optimal management of DFBI are less well characterized. This review synthesizes current evidence on the epidemiology, psychiatric comorbidities, behavioral mechanisms, management strategies, and ethical challenges associated with DFBI [1, 2, 4, 6].

Increasing numbers of research teams are investigating the feasibility of developing artificial amnion and placenta technology (AAPT), commonly referred to as "artificial womb technology". This technology, aimed at supporting ex vivo gestation, has not yet been tested in humans, but it has been stated that we are closer to clinical application than ever before as breakthroughs in animal studies demonstrate good proof of principle. With these proof-of-concept models, further dissemination of AAPT as a research modality is expected. In this review article, we consider the ethical implications of

The article aims to address the ethical implications of therapist reactions to sexual offender treatment and, in doing so, increase awareness and understanding of the interaction between the clinician and the challenges of working with sexual offenders. The effects of providing psychological services in general, and to sexual offenders specifically, are reviewed, including the impact on services provided. Practice implications are also discussed as the authors consider the negative effects (e.g., burnout) that therapists experience due to treatment quality and the ethical issues and responsibi

BACKGROUND: Midwives are required to make ethical decisions with the support of respective codes of professional ethics which provide a framework for decision making in clinical practice. While each midwife should be ethically aware and sensitive to the ever-changing issues within reproduction, few empirical studies have examined the views of student midwives in relation to reproductive ethical dilemmas.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore midwifery students' reactions to a number of ethical dilemmas relating to women's experiences of reproductive decision making.

Advances in organ transplantation and mechanical circulatory support technologies have deepened the ethical complexity of care for critically ill patients across the donation-transplant continuum, especially at the end-of-life. This narrative review is structured around four clinical scenarios faced by bedside intensivists: patients awaiting transplantation, patients for whom transplant is no longer an option, patients who may become organ donors, and transplant patients at the end-of-life. Across these contexts, clinicians must navigate prognostic uncertainty, steward scarce resources, and ad
