Effect of iron and zinc-biofortified pearl millet consumption on growth and immune competence in children aged 12-18 months in India: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Biofortified crops represent a sustainable agricultural solution for the widespread micronutrient malnutrition in India and other resource-limited settings. This study aims to investigate the effect of the consumption of foods prepared with iron- and zinc-biofortified pearl millet (FeZn-PM) by children on biomarkers of iron and zinc status, growth, and immune function. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct a randomised controlled feeding trial in identified slums of Mumbai, India among 200 children aged between 12 and 18 months. Children will be randomised to receive foods prepa

Data monitoring committees for clinical trials evaluating treatments of COVID-19.

The first cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were reported in December 2019 and the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 was declared a pandemic in March 2020 by the World Health Organization. This sparked a plethora of investigations into diagnostics and vaccination for SARS-CoV-2, as well as treatments for COVID-19. Since COVID-19 is a severe disease associated with a high mortality, clinical trials in this disease should be monitored by a data monitoring committee (DMC), also known as data safety monitoring board (DSMB). DMCs in this indication face a number of challenges including fast recruit

Gestational surrogacy: a feasible option for patients with Rokitansky syndrome.

Rokitansky syndrome is a developmental defect characterized by agenesis of the uterus and vagina but normal gonads and secondary sexual characters. It is not commonly transmitted as a dominant genetic trait. Surrogacy, which is legally and ethically accepted in the UK and other countries, has made it possible for the patients with this syndrome to have their own genetic children. Six patients with Rokitansky syndrome underwent 11 ovarian stimulation cycles that resulted in 11 fresh and three frozen embryo transfer procedures into six prospective surrogate mothers. Both commissioning and surrog

Protocol for a clinically annotated biorepository of samples from Australian immune-compromised patients to investigate the host-microbiome interaction.

INTRODUCTION: The human gut microbiota has the potential to modulate the outcomes of several human diseases. This effect is likely to be mediated through interaction with the host immune system. This protocol details the establishment of a biorepository of clinically annotated samples, which we will use to explore correlations between the gut microbiota and the immune system of immune-compromised patients. We aim to identify microbiome-related risk factors for adverse outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSES: This is a protocol for the development of a biorepository of clinically annotated samples coll

Smoking patterns and the intention to quit in German patients with cancer: study protocol for a cross-sectional observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients who continue to smoke cigarettes after a cancer diagnosis can experience poorer treatment tolerance and outcomes than those who quit immediately. Identifying risk factors specific to patients with cancer who smoke, as well as their smoking behaviours (eg, frequency of use, types of tobacco products), dependency level and quit intentions, is necessary to better inform patients and encourage quitting smoking after a cancer diagnosis. This study aims to examine the occurrence of smoking in patients with cancer treated at specialised oncology departments and outpatient clini

Generation Malawi: a family-based birth cohort investigating physical and mental health conditions in rural and urban Malawi - study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Malawi is at a unique time point when infectious disease and undernutrition persist while modern diets, and changes in urbanisation, medical treatments and climate change, non-communicable long-term physical and mental health conditions are emerging. Malawi faces high socioeconomic hardships with 75% of families living in poverty with limited access to basic resources. With these demographic changes, very limited research has been undertaken into the determinants of physical and mental health-related trajectories over time, and in particular the role of prenatal and early life ex

Population-based study of pharmacogenetics and pharmacokinetics in Southern African patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (PoPG): a protocol for the Namibian cohort.

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is an urgent public health challenge in Namibia, with profound socioeconomic consequences. The high burden of both tuberculosis and HIV complicates treatment and underscores the need for optimised drug therapies. Precision medicine, which leverages patient-specific genetic and molecular information, offers promise for improving MDR-TB outcomes. However, its effective application relies on population-specific data, particularly understanding how individuals metabolise tuberculosis drugs and how genetic diversity drives variability in treatme

Effects of supervised progressive resistance training on corticospinal excitability in persons with multiple sclerosis: A randomized controlled trial protocol for the NEXIMS study.

BACKGROUND: Neurodegeneration is a hallmark of multiple sclerosis (MS) that affects both the structure (e.g., total or regional brain volume) and function (e.g., corticospinal excitability) of the central nervous system (CNS), driving disability progression. Consequently, lower extremity neuromuscular function and physical function are preferentially affected, ultimately contributing to a reduced quality of life. While several studies have examined the effects of resistance training (RT) and other exercise modalities on CNS structure in persons with MS (pwMS), only a few studies have evaluated
