A Systematic Review of β-Lactamase and Carbapenemase-Producing Escherichia coli at the Animal-Food Interface in the Middle East and North Africa.

Antimicrobial resistance is a major global health challenge, and food-producing animals and foods of animal origin may contribute to the dissemination of resistant bacteria through the food chain. This review aimed to summarize recent evidence on extended-spectrum β-lactamase- and carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli in food animals and animal-derived foods across Middle East and North Africa countries. A structured literature search was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies published between 2016 and 2025. Data regarding country, sample type, prevalence, and resistance genes were ex

Alcids-like flapping wing for exploring the role of wing folding in underwater locomotion.

Alcids showcase excellent aerial-aquatic locomotion abilities benefitting from the morphing wing. In the aerial environment, alcids fully extend their wings, while underwater, they partly fold the wings. In this article, we mimicked the wing morphology of the alcids family to explore the hydrodynamic advantage of the folded configuration in the aquatic environment and four three-dimensional-printed wings including any combination of with feather or without feather, and extended or folded were created. The steady-state experiment reveals that the extended wings of alcids double the lift, counte

Linkage studies in familial Alzheimer disease: evidence for chromosome 19 linkage.

A genetic component in the etiology of Alzheimer disease (AD) has been supported by indirect evidence for several years, with autosomal dominant inheritance with age-dependent penetrance being suggested to explain the familial aggregation of affecteds. St. George Hyslop et al. reported linkage of familial AD (FAD) in four early-onset families (mean age at onset [M] less than 50 years). Subsequent studies have been inconsistent in their results; Goate et al. also reported positive lod scores. However, both Pericak-Vance et al.'s study of a series of mainly late-onset FAD families (M greater tha

Autosomal dominant hypoparathyroidism: a proband with concurrent nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

In this paper we report an extended family with well documented autosomal dominant hypoparathyroidism which was ascertained through a proband with coincident nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Clinical findings were limited to a slight decrease in overall stature and to clinical signs of hypocalcaemia. Intelligence was normal and two patients were asymptomatic. Published reports have established that autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and sex linked recessive familial isolated hypoparathyroidism exist. However, in almost half the reported families an X linked dominant aetiology cannot be ex…

Saethre-Chotzen syndrome associated with balanced translocations involving 7p21: three further families.

We describe three families segregating different reciprocal chromosome translocations, t(7;18)(p21.2;q23), t(2;7)(q21.1;p21.2), and t(5;7)(p15.3;p21.2). A total of seven apparently balanced carriers have been identified and all manifest features of the Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, although only two have overt craniosynostosis. In one family the carriers are immediately recognisable by their unusual ears, and clefts of the hard or soft palate are present in all three families. These observations extend previous linkage and cytogenetic evidence that a locus for Saethre-Chotzen syndrome resides in b

Familial adult myoclonic epilepsy type 1 SAMD12 TTTCA repeat expansion arose 17,000 years ago and is present in Sri Lankan and Indian families.

Familial adult myoclonic epilepsy 1 (FAME1), first recognised in Japanese families, was recently shown to be caused by a TTTCA repeat insertion in intron 4 of SAMD12 on chromosome 8. We performed whole genome sequencing on two families with FAME, one of Sri Lankan origin and the other of Indian origin, and identified a TTTCA repeat insertion in SAMD12 in both families. Haplotype analysis revealed that both families shared the same core ancestral haplotype reported in Japanese and Chinese families with FAME1. Mutation dating, based on the length of shared haplotypes, estimated the age of the an

Reliability and validity of the training satisfaction questionnaire for family members (TSQ-FM) entering the ICU during an isolation disease outbreak.

BACKGROUND: The presence of family members in an isolated ICU during an isolation disease outbreak is restricted by hospital policies because of the infectious risk. This can be overcome by conferring to family members the skill and the ability to safely don and doff the personal protective equipment (PPE) through a nurse-led training intervention and assess their satisfaction, to respond to the need to define a safe, effective and quality care pathway focused on Family-Centered Care (FCC) principles. OBJECTIVE: the study aimed to build a valid and reliable instrument for clinical practice to

A fourteen years follow-up of a case of partial trisomy 12q and monosomy 12p recombinants of a familial pericentric inversion of chromosome 12: clinical, cytogenetic and molecular observations.

Partial trisomy 12q and monosomy 12p lead to multiple malformation syndromes. Only four cases were previously reported with the association of these two aneusomies resulting from a familial pericentric inversion of chromosome 12. We report on the clinical, cytogenetic and molecular findings in a boy with an unbalanced karyotype which resulted from a familial pericentric inversion of chromosome 12. The patient was evaluated at birth and followed up until 14 years of age. He showed severe mental retardation, seizures, and dysmorphic features related both to a trisomy 12q and a monosomy 12p. Hypoxic response regulators RHY-1 and EGL-9/PHD promote longevity through a VHL-1-independent transcriptional response.

HIF-1-mediated adaptation to changes in oxygen availability is a critical aspect of healthy physiology. HIF is regulated by a conserved mechanism whereby EGLN/PHD family members hydroxylate HIF in an oxygen-dependent manner, targeting it for ubiquitination by Von-Hippel-Lindau (VHL) family members, leading to its proteasomal degradation. The activity of the only C. elegans PHD family member, EGL-9, is also regulated by a hydrogen sulfide sensing cysteine-synthetase-like protein, CYSL-1, which is, in turn, regulated by RHY-1/acyltransferase. Over the last decade, multiple seminal studies have e

E-cadherin germline mutations define an inherited cancer syndrome dominated by diffuse gastric cancer.

To extend earlier observations of germline E-cadherin mutations in kindreds with an inherited susceptibility to diffuse gastric cancer, we searched for germline E-cadherin mutations in five further families affected predominantly by diffuse gastric cancer and one family with a history of diffuse gastric cancer and early-onset breast cancer. Heterozygous inactivating mutations were found in the E-cadherin gene in each of these families. No mutation hotspots were identified. These results demonstrate that germline mutation of the E-cadherin gene is a common cause of hereditary diffuse gastric ca

Fine mapping of the dyskeratosis congenita locus in Xq28.

Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is characterised by reticulate skin pigmentation, mucosal leucoplakia, and nail dystrophy. Bone marrow failure occurs in 50% of patients and is the principal cause of early mortality. In the majority of families the pattern of inheritance of DC is compatible with an X linked recessive trait. The locus for the X linked recessive form of DC has been linked to Xq28. We have now extended our earlier studies by investigating five families with additional Xq28 polymorphic markers; analysis of recombination events in these families has located the DC1 locus between GABRA3

Familial cases of gastroschisis in a population-based registry.

Only a few familial cases of gastroschisis have been reported. Consequently, the risk of a recurrence has been thought to be very small. In a population-based study of gastroschisis that included an extended pedigree of all probands, 6 (4.7%) out of 127 families had more than one affected relative. The relationships of the affected were: sib, half-sib (2), first cousin, second cousin once removed, and great uncle. Sib recurrence was 3.5%. Our results suggest that pregnancies occurring in a family with a history of gastroschisis may be at higher risk of recurrence than previously thought.

Parent-child relationships in Latinx families: The role of immigrant concentration, residential stability, and generational status.

Prior research links neighborhood immigrant concentration and residential stability to individual health outcomes. It remains unclear how neighborhood social organization extend to family functioning among immigrant families. Expanding the scope of research on neighborhoods and family relationships, this study draws on data from 1417 Latinx families (Myouth age  = 10.19 years, SDyouth age  = 3.34) to: (1) examine associations between neighborhood immigrant concentration, residential stability, and parent-child warmth and conflict in Latinx families, and (2) test whether associations vary by fa

The impact of shelter use and housing placement on mortality hazard for unaccompanied adults and adults in family households entering New York City shelters: 1990-2002.

This study examines mortality among New York City (NYC) homeless shelter users, assessing the relationships between mortality hazard and time in shelter, patterns of homelessness, and subsequent housing exits for both adults in families and single adults. Administrative records from the NYC shelter system were matched with death records from the Social Security Administration for 160,525 persons. Crude mortality rates and life tables were calculated, and survival analyses were undertaken using these data. Life expectancy was 64.2 and 68.6 years for single adult males and single adult females,

Strong allelic association between the torsion dystonia gene (DYT1) andloci on chromosome 9q34 in Ashkenazi Jews.

The DYT1 gene responsible for early-onset, idiopathic torsion dystonia (ITD) in the Ashkenazi Jewish population, as well as in one large non-Jewish family, has been mapped to chromosome 9q32-34. Using (GT)n and RFLP markers in this region, we have identified obligate recombination events in some of these Jewish families, which further delineate the area containing the DYT1 gene to a 6-cM region bounded by loci AK1 and ASS. In 52 unrelated, affected Ashkenazi Jewish individuals, we have found highly significant linkage disequilibrium between a particular extended haplotype at the ABL-ASS loci a

Perinatal support to protect maternal mental health.

Family Action is a charity that helps more than 45,000 vulnerable families and children across England a year by offering emotional, practical and financial support. A pilot of a perinatal support project in Southwark, London was found to reduce mental health problems in vulnerable women and is now being extended. Such schemes complement the work of health visitors and other health professionals. Commissioners need to be aware of the long-term impact of such low-cost interventions in the early years.

Malignancy of recurrent, early-onset major depression: a family study.

Coordinated efforts to identify susceptibility genes for unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) and related disorders are now underway. These studies have focused on recurrent, early-onset MDD (RE-MDD), the most heritable form of this disorder. The goal of this study was to characterize the burden of MDD and other mood disorders, comorbid mental disorders, and excess mortality in RE-MDD families. A total of 81 families were identified through probands over the age of 18, who met criteria for recurrent (> or = 2 episodes), early-onset (< or = 25 years), nonpsychotic, unipolar MDD (RE-MDD), an

From Resuscitation to Rehabilitation: The Post-Intensive Care Syndrome Continuum in Sepsis Care.

Sepsis and septic shock affect nearly 49 million people worldwide each year. Although advances in early recognition and evidence-based management have improved survival, many patients experience long-term cognitive, physical, and psychological impairments collectively known as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). These sequelae often extend to families and caregivers (PICS-F), resulting in lasting declines in quality of life. Recovery from sepsis represents a continuum that begins during intensive care and extends into survivorship. Decisions regarding analgesia, sedation, delirium prevention,
