A 42-year-old woman was admitted to Mersin University, Department of Ophthalmology Clinic with itching and burning sensation of the right eye for 3 weeks. In her slit-lamp examination, nits and lice, attached to the upper and lower eyelashes of her right eye, were observed. Lice and nits were destroyed by argon laser phototherapy and were removed with the help of a fine forceps thereafter. Argon laser phototherapy is a quick, effective, and safe treatment modality for phthiriasis palpebrarum.

We report on a 2-month-old girl whose parents are first cousins. The patient has severe craniofacial anomalies characterized by: encephalocele, hypertelorism, midface hypoplasia, hypoplasia of frontal bone on the left side, malformed left eye, absent inner eyelashes, irregular S-shaped palpebral fissures, deformed nostrils, hypoplastic right nasal wing and cleft lip, and clefts of premaxilla, palate and uvula. No other malformations were observed. This association of anomalies suggests the diagnosis of frontofacionasal dysplasia. Parental consanguinity suggests autosomal recessive inheritance.

BACKGROUND: Lower eyelid incisions are widely used for the orbital approach in periorbital trauma and aesthetic surgery. In general, the subciliary approach is known to cause disposition of the lower eyelid by scarring the anterior lamella in some cases. On the other hand, many surgeons believe that a transconjunctival approach usually does not result in such complications and is a reliable method. We measured positional changes in the lower eyelid in blowout fracture repair since entropion is one of the most serious complications of the transconjunctival orbital approach.

Pthirus pubis usually infests the pubis, inguinal folds, buttocks and perianal region. In hairy males or when the infestation is longstanding, this louse can also occur on the thighs, abdomen, chest, axillae and beard. Eyelashes may be involved in children. The involvement of the scalp is very rare. We describe four girls with P. pubis infestation located exclusively on the scalp which was characterized by a rash on the nape that can suggest a head and neck form of atopic dermatitis.

Four cases of pediculosis, two in adults and two in children, caused by the crab-louse, Pthirus pubis Linnaeus, 1758 (Diptera: Anoplura) is reported from peninsular Malaysia. This is the second report of the problem to be documented from the country. Although P. pubis is closely associated with genital hairs, it is, however, also found to occur on the eyelashes, eyebrows, hairs of the body, head and axilla. The few reported cases of pthiriasis probably do not reflect the true situation.

A previously unreported complication of the use of prostaglandin analog medications for glaucoma therapy is described. A patient with monocular open-angle glaucoma had trichiasis, a condition associated with the use of a prostaglandin analog. The patient was treated with radiofrequency cautery and is now asymptomatic. The unmedicated eye remains asymptomatic to date. Increased lash length, thickness, and pigmentation are well-documented side effects of prostaglandin analog glaucoma drops. Physicians must consider this when prescribing these medications for patients with misdirected eyelashes.

Familial congenital spinal arachnoid cysts causing progressive paraplegia are reported in two adolescent siblings as part of a hereditary syndrome. The other features of this unusual dominantly inherited disorder include double rows of eyelashes, partial ectropion of the lower eyelids, and acquired late-onset lymphedema of the lower extremities. The siblings' mother, who had roentgenographic evidence of a similar intraspinal lesion, was free of neurological symptoms but had the other characteristic features. Surgical treatment of the arachnoid cysts improves the progressive paraplegia.

We report a boy with severe developmental delay, microcephaly and characteristic facial dysmorphism consisting in round face, hypertelorism, upslanted palpebral fissures, small nose, large mouth, micrognathia, sparse hair and eyelashes. Array-CGH revealed a de novo duplication of 103 kb within 17q21.2 not reported to date. The duplication includes 8 genes: DHX58, KAT2A, HSPB9, RAB5C, KCNH4, HCRT, GHDC and STAT5B. Three genes (KATA2, KCNH4, and STAT5B) may contribute to intellectual deficiency. Further observations will be necessary to confirm the specificity of the facial Gestalt.
