Impairment of emotional expression recognition in schizophrenia: a Cuban familial association study.

It is well established that schizophrenia is associated with difficulties in recognizing facial emotional expressions, but few studies have reported the presence of this deficit among their unaffected relatives. This study attempts to add new evidence of familial association on an emotional expression processing test. The study evaluated the performance of 93 paranoid schizophrenia patients, 110 first-degree relatives of probands from multiplex schizophrenia families, and 109 nonpsychiatric controls on a facial emotional recognition test using a computer morphing technique to present the dynam

Family resemblance: ten family members with prosopagnosia and within-class object agnosia.

We report on neuropsychological testing done with a family in which many members reported severe face recognition impairments. These 10 individuals were high functioning in everyday life and performed normally on tests of low-level vision and high-level cognition. In contrast, they showed clear deficits with tests requiring face memory and judgements of facial similarity. They did not show deficits with all aspects of higher level visual processing as all tested performed normally on a challenging facial emotion recognition task and on a global-local letter identification task. On object memor

Decoding the neural correlates of social cognition and emotion recognition in cannabis users: A systematic review of neuroimaging studies.

Social factors significantly influence the initiation and progression of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder. Although cannabis is the most widely used drug globally, its social cognitive aspects and neural correlates have rarely been studied. To evaluate the findings to date and to guide future research, this systematic review assesses neuroimaging evidence on the associations between long-term cannabis use, social cognition, and emotion recognition. Findings from 8 studies on social cognition suggest an increased neural response to social influence and a decreased neural sensitivity to so

Comparison of human and marmoset basic-level face categorization based on shape.

Our ability to process faces depends on high-level visual areas in the brain which are thought to be partially shared between human and non-human primates. Nonetheless, studies of face recognition – whether for detecting or discriminating faces – in non-human primates have generally relied on 2D face photographs where low-level strategies relying on texture and appearance cues can be employed to adequately support task performance. Here, we tested humans and marmoset monkeys on a geometry-based invariant face category discrimination task under 3D pose and lighting variation using two texturele

False alarms during recognition of famous people from faces and voices in patients with unilateral temporal lobe resection and normal participants tested after anodal tDCS over the left or right ATL.

Data gathered in the field of the experimental social psychology have shown that it is more difficult to recognize a person through his/her voice than through his/her face and that false alarms (FA) are produced more in voice than in face recognition. Furthermore, some neuropsychological investigations have suggested that in patients with damage to the right anterior temporal lobe (ATL) the number of FA could be higher for voice than for face recognition. In the present study we assessed FA during recognition of famous people from faces and voices in patients with unilateral ATL tumours and in

Hemispheric Organization for Visual Object Recognition: A Theoretical Account and Empirical Evidence.

Despite the similarity in structure, the hemispheres of the human brain have somewhat different functions. A traditional view of hemispheric organization asserts that there are independent and largely lateralized domain-specific regions in ventral occipitotemporal (VOTC), specialized for the recognition of distinct classes of objects. Here, we offer an alternative account of the organization of the hemispheres, with a specific focus on face and word recognition. This alternative account relies on three computational principles: distributed representations and knowledge, cooperation and competi

Emotion recognition from faces and bodies in Parkinson's disease and its relationship to MRI-based brain volumetry.

Although Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily defined by motor symptoms, non-motor manifestations-including deficits in social cognition-are increasingly recognized for their impact on daily functioning. Emotion recognition impairment is one such deficit, but prior research has mainly focused on facial expressions, neglecting other socially relevant cues such as body postures. This study examined recognition of emotions from both faces and bodies and their cognitive and neuroanatomical correlates in non-demented patients with PD. We enrolled 25 individuals with mild to moderate PD and 24 age-

Differences in emotion recognition between nonimmersive versus immersive virtual reality: preliminary findings in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Deficits in social cognition may impair emotional processing and facial emotional recognition (FER) in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia. FER is generally explored using photographs or images of static faces that do not fully capture the complexity of real-life facial stimuli. To overcome this limitation, we developed a set of dynamic virtual faces depicting six basic emotions (i.e. happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise) and a neutral expression suitable for presentation in immersive and nonimmersive virtual realities. This study presents preliminary findin

Deficits in recognizing female facial expressions related to social network in cocaine-addicted men.

BACKGROUND: The ability to accurately recognise facial expressions of emotion is crucial for social functioning and maintaining healthy relationships. Recognising the emotional state of others allows us to respond to their needs and adjust our behaviour appropriately. Impairments in facial affect recognition have been reported in chronic cocaine users but little is known whether these contribute to their difficulties in social situations. METHODS: We assessed facial emotional expression recognition in forty-five men with cocaine use disorder (CUD) and forty-four healthy control participants.

Associations between feelings of social anxiety and emotion perception.

BACKGROUND: Abnormally biased perceptual judgment is a feature of many psychiatric disorders. Thus, individuals with social anxiety disorder are biased to recall or interpret social events negatively. Cognitive behavioral therapy addresses such bias by teaching patients, via verbal instruction, to become aware of and change pathological misjudgment. The present study examined whether targeting verbal instruction to specific decision parameters that influence perceptual judgment may affect changes in anger perception. METHOD: We used a signal detection framework to decompose anger perception i

Unveiling the content of frontal feedback in challenging object recognition.

Object recognition under challenging real-world conditions, including partial occlusion, remains an enduring focus of investigation in cognitive visual neuroscience. This study addresses the insufficiently elucidated neural mechanisms and temporal dynamics involved in this complex process, concentrating on the persistent challenge of recognizing objects obscured by occlusion. Through the analysis of human EEG data, we decode feedback characteristics within frontotemporal networks, uncovering intricate neural mechanisms during occlusion coding, with a specific emphasis on processing complex sti

The eyes are central to face detection: revisiting the foundations of face processing.

Face detection feels effortless, yet it requires finely tuned computations to extract socially meaningful signals from the visual stream. Here, we used the Bubbles method to isolate the facial features and spatial frequency information that support face categorization. Across three experiments varying in task demands and visual context, the eye region consistently emerged as the most diagnostic source of information, particularly in high spatial frequencies. This finding held whether participants distinguished faces from noise, from non-face objects, or from real-world categories-suggesting th

Face-like holistic processing in non-face stimuli.

Holistic processing of visual stimuli has long been regarded as unique to faces, or otherwise extended to other object categories given sufficient expertise. We designed novel abstract stimuli that are recognizable strictly by configural information, and matched control stimuli that require the use of only featural information. We then tested four classic markers of holistic perception: inversion, misalignment, part-whole, and composite effects. We found that second-order configuration stimuli elicited robust holistic effects, while featural stimuli do not, showing that such effects emerge spe

Hyperfamiliarity for faces: Preserved core face processing with altered medial temporal lobe connectivity in a single case study.

Hyperfamiliarity for faces (HFF) is a rare condition in which unfamiliar faces evoke an abnormal sense of familiarity. We present a case study of Nell, a 49-year-old woman who developed hyperfamiliarity following a severe migraine. Using a combination of behavioural and neuroimaging approaches, we investigated the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying her condition. Behaviourally, Nell demonstrated accurate recognition of famous and personally familiar faces, but frequently misclassified unfamiliar faces as familiar. Structural MRI scans revealed no overt abnormalities, and functional ima

Emotion recognition in Huntington's disease: a systematic review.

There is increasing interest in the nature of the emotion recognition deficit in Huntington's disease (HD). There are conflicting reports of disproportionate impairments for some emotions in some modalities in HD. A systematic review and narrative synthesis was conducted for studies investigating emotion recognition in HD. Embase, MEDLINE, PsychINFO and Pubmed were searched from 1993 to 2010, and citations and reference lists were searched. 1724 citations were identified. Sixteen studies were included. In manifest HD evidence of impaired recognition of facial expressions of anger was found con

Recognition of immaturity and emotional expressions in blended faces by children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

The recognition of facial immaturity and emotional expression by children with autism, language disorders, mental retardation, and non-disabled controls was studied in two experiments. Children identified immaturity and expression in upright and inverted faces. The autism group identified fewer immature faces and expressions than control (Exp. 1 & 2), language disordered (Exp. 1), and mental retardation (Exp. 2) groups. Facial inversion interfered with all groups' recognition of facial immaturity and with control and language disordered groups' recognition of expression. Error analyses (Exp. 1

Supraphysiological testosterone levels from anabolic steroid use and reduced sensitivity to negative facial expressions in men.

RATIONALE: Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are used to improve physical performance and appearance, but have been associated with deficits in social cognitive functioning. Approximately 30% of people who use AAS develop a dependence, increasing the risk for undesired effects. OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship between AAS use (current/previous), AAS dependence, and the ability to recognize emotional facial expressions, and investigate the potential mediating role of hormone levels. METHODS: In total 156 male weightlifters, including those with current (n = 45) or previous (n = 34) AAS

Same salience, different consequences: Disturbed inter-network connectivity during a social oddball paradigm in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: So far findings on emotional face processing among depressed individuals reveal an inconsistent image, with only some studies supporting a mood-congruent bias in salience processing. Thereby, many results are based on the processing of sad emotions and mostly focused on resting-state connectivity analysis. The present study aimed to target this misbalance by implementing a social oddball paradigm, with a special focus on the amygdala, the ACC, the insula and subdivisions of insula and ACC. METHODS: Twenty-seven depressed patients and twenty-seven non-depressed controls took part i
