Outcomes of eyes with persistent diabetic macular oedema: The Fight Retinal Blindness! Project.

AIMS: To compare 1-year and 2-year outcomes of eyes with persistent and non-persistent diabetic macular oedema (DME) treated with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors. METHODS: This was a cohort study using the Fight Retinal Blindness! (FRB!) international outcomes registry. Participants had treatment-naïve eyes with centre-involving DME starting intravitreal VEGF inhibitor therapy from 2014 to 2023. Eyes were grouped as those with persistent DME and those with non-persistent DME. Main outcome measures were mean visual acuity (VA) change and central subfoveal thickness change

Incidence and outcomes of prosthetic valve thrombosis during peripheral extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

OBJECTIVES: In the context of postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock (PCCS) following valve replacement surgery, it may be necessary to implant a peripheral veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (pVA-ECMO). This procedure, however, carries a risk of prosthetic valve thrombosis. The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the incidence and outcomes of prosthetic valve thrombosis after VA-ECMO support for PCCS and to report the associated risk factors. METHODS: All consecutive adult patients who received pVA-ECMO for PCCS following a valve replacement procedure between January 201

Vitamin A deficiency impairs spatial learning and memory: the mechanism of abnormal CBP-dependent histone acetylation regulated by retinoic acid receptor alpha.

Vitamin A (VA) is an essential micronutrient. Numerous studies have confirmed that VA deficiency (VAD) leads to a decline in learning and memory function. Our previous studies have demonstrated that retinoic acid nuclear receptor α (RARα) in the hippocampus plays a crucial role in learning and memory, but the exact mechanism for this process is unclear. Epigenetic modifications, particularly histone acetylation, are involved in nervous system development, learning and memory function, and the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Histone acetyltransferases (HATs), such as CREB-binding pr

[Spontaneous dissection of the vertebral artery].

Spontaneous dissection of the vertebral artery (VA) is an infrequent cause of vertebral-basilar ischaemia in children and young adults, being responsible for 4% of cases of ischaemic infarct in this age group. The distinction between spontaneous dissection and traumatic dissection helps to clarify its vascular tendency, not brought on by laceration of the vessel wall secondary to traumatism. It appears clinically with neck pain and/or headache, followed by a clinical picture of ischaemia in the vertebral-basilar area. Diagnosis is based on clinical suspicion and identification of the angiograp

Expression and assembly of procoagulant complexes by human pleural mesothelial cells.

Many pleural diseases involve fibrin deposition within the pleural cavity, an event that necessarily involves the mesothelium. This study of … ion increased with factor Xa concentration, and the rate was 5-, 6-fold higher in presence of added factor Va indicating that HPMC support expression of prothrombinase activity. Further, direct binding of radioiodinated factor Xa to HPMC was specific, concentration-dependent and saturable, confirming that the cells support the assembly of the prothrombinase …
