Women with inherited bleeding disorders (IBD) require the input of a multidisciplinary team to improve outcomes of pregnancy. The role of th … ations during pregnancy. A clear association has only been established in women with fibrinogen and factor XIII deficiency. In the affected neonate with severe bleeding disorders such as haemophilia, the risk of head bleeding is significant, and appropriate management of labour and delivery has an important impact on reducing the risk. BACKGROUND: The microscopic characteristics of the fibrin clot structure, such as fibrin fiber length and diameter, network fiber density, and pore size, can be correlated with mechanical properties, permeability, susceptibility to lysis, and diseases. Several of these properties are commonly assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); however, there are currently no standardized protocols on clot preparation for fiber diameter determination using SEM. This has led to a large discrepancy in values reported for healthy individuals and precludes interlaboratory comparisons.

BACKGROUND: Epistaxis can have a variety of different local or systemic causes. It is the cardinal symptom of von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most frequent congenital bleeding disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1%. The usual routine coagulation screening tests (PT, APTT, platelet count) are not sufficient to diagnose VWD, factor XIII (FXIII)-deficiency or platelet dysfunction.
METHOD: A prospective study was conducted implementing enhanced coagulation screening for bleeding disorders in a total of 100 inpatients admitted for epistaxis.
RESULTS: A bleeding disorder was found in 13%…

Women with inherited bleeding disorders may face several haemostatic challenges during pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnancy in these women requires specialised and individualised care. Prenatal diagnosis is primarily considered in families affected by severe bleeding disorder such as haemophilia. Non-invasive fetal sex determination by analysis of free fetal DNA in maternal blood offers carriers of haemophilia a means of avoiding invasive testing and its associated risks in female pregnancies. With the exception of fibrinogen and factor XIII deficiencies, it is currently unclear whether women w…

The dermal extracellular matrix was immature, and factor XIII-a positive dendrocytes were rare and globular rather than dendritic. We frame as a hypothesis that the disease is due to or associated with a defect in maturation of a subset of dermal dendrocytes during fetal life. This entity may be designed as th …

Early signs of haemorrhages develop in the childhood, nose bleeding being predominant. Recurrent nose bleeding was observed in 130 (89.0%) patients with thrombocytopathies, 37 patients with nasal pathologies, 13 out of 14 children having willebrand's disease, 3 patients suffering from Rendu-Osler disease, in a boy with a factor XIII deficiency, and in a girl with psoriasis. In the case of haemorrhagic diathesis, nose bleeding was, as a rule, combined with haemorrhages of other types (skin, gum, uterine, etc.) whereas in the case of ENT pathology, nose bleeding was the only haemorrhagic symptom…

The healing process of osteochondral fracture was studied experimentally and clinically, using fibrin adhesive system (FAS) containing highly concentrated and freeze-dried fibrinogen, thrombin and factor XIII. Osteochondral fractures were made in the femoral condyle of the rabbit. Most of the adhered fibrin was gradually absorbed at the fracture site and at the same time was replaced with granulation tissue containing abundant capillaries, fibroblasts and osteoblasts, by the 10th day. Complete fracture healing was achieved histologically in one month. Fifteen cases of intraarticular osteochond…

Mutations of hemostasis/coagulation-related genes have been speculated to cause recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). This study investigated the genetic association between the polymorphisms of factor V (F5), factor II (F2), antithrombin (SERPINC1), protein C (PROC), protein S (PROS1), protein Z (PROZ), factor XIII (F13A1), and carboxypeptidase B2 (CPB2) genes and RSA. The 426 patients with RSA and 444 controls were recruited in this study, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed by using SNPscan technology. Genotype and allele frequencies of rs3136520 in F2, rs3024731 in PRO…

INTRODUCTION: Cryoprecipitate is used in conditions like hypofibrinogenemia, massive transfusion with bleeding, and factor XIII deficiency. The current guidelines support the preparation of cryoprecipitate from 450 ml whole blood. But 350 ml of whole blood collection is expected from low body weight (<55 kg) donors. However, no standardized criteria exist for preparing cryoprecipitate from 350 ml of whole blood.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study compared the fibrinogen and factor VIII levels in cryoprecipitate units prepared from 350 ml versus 450 ml whole blood collection. The study also compared…

A 70-year-old man presented to our hospital with intramuscular hemorrhage in the right thigh. He had exhibited a tendency to bleed for the last 16 years and had visited several medical institutions, but no diagnosis had been made. Since the risk of sudden bleeding was assumed to be high due to his age, we decided to examine him in our department. A coagulation abnormality with prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR) of 4.5 and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) of 99.6 seconds was observed, but the platelet count, fibrinogen, and PIVKAII were within normal limits. Inherited deficiency of FXIII A subunit (FXIII-A) is a rare (1:2,000,000) but very severe bleeding diathesis. The incidence is much higher in communities where the practice of consanguineous marriage is combined with founder effect mutation. Because of the high risk of intracranial bleeding, life-long prophylaxis, preferably using FXIII concentrate, is mandatory. In FXIII-B subunit deficiency the bleeding diathesis is mild to moderate. FXIII deficiency is frequently associated with impaired wound healing. Women suffering from FXIII deficiency cannot carry pregnancies to term; in severe cases s

A method for producing concentrated fibrinogen, an essential component of fibrin glue, from individually stored, single-donor units of human plasma is reported. The plasma is screened for hepatitis B antigen and HIV-1 virus to reduce the risk of transmission of hepatitis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This material is routinely stocked in some operating rooms. It is thus readily available when requested by a surgeon for use in combination with topical bovine thrombin to produce fibrin glue. From April 1985 to March 1987 this material was used by surgeons from eight different su

Otorhinolaryngological operations would be facilitated by the use of a safe, cheap, surgical adhesive. Though commercial fibrin glue is effective, it is both relatively expensive and, because it is prepared from pooled human blood, there has been concern that it carries the risk of transmitting viral disease, in particular hepatitis and acquired immune deficiency syndrome. We describe a rapid, cheap method of preparing sufficient fibrin glue, of adequate bonding power, from a small quantity of the patient's own blood, and therefore with no risk of contracting viral disease. Our method of prepa

The blood coagulation and the fibrinolytic systems of nine patients envenomed by Bothrops jararaca in São Paulo (Brazil) were studied. Five of the accidents were caused by young snakes (less than 50 cm). On admission, four patients had non-clotting and three partially-clotting blood. Fibrinogen levels were decreased due to the thrombin-like activity of the venom as expected. Consequent secondary activation of the fibrinolytic system was evident from the low levels of alpha-2-antiplasmin and the high titres of fibrin(ogen) degradation products. High titres of cross-linked fibrin fragment D (D-d

BACKGROUND: Rare coagulation factor deficiencies are uncommon inherited bleeding disorders that remain poorly understood in many parts of the world, including Morocco. They primarily involve factors I, II, V, VII, X, XI, and XIII, and are generally inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. This study aims to analyze the epidemiological and biological profiles of these deficiencies in a Moroccan population.
METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study conducted over a ten-year period (January 2015 - May 2025) in the Hematology Laboratory of the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablan
