Strong, safe, and secure: negotiating early fathering and military service across the deployment cycle.

Military fathers of young children often endure repeated separations from their children, and these may disrupt the early parent-child relationship. Postdeployment reunification also poses challenges; disruptions that have occurred must often be repaired in the context of heightened emotions on the part of each family member at a time when fathers are themselves readjusting to the routines and responsibilities of family life. The current study employed qualitative research with the central aim of informing a richer understanding of these experiences. Interviews were conducted with 14 military

College drinking behaviors: mediational links between parenting styles, parental bonds, depression, and alcohol problems.

Mediational links between parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive), parental bond (positive, negative), depression, alcohol use and abuse were tested. A 2-group, multiple-indicator, multiple-cause structural equation model with 441 (216 female, 225 male) college students was examined. In general, a poor parental bond with one's father was highly predictive of depression, a well-known predictor of alcohol abuse and related problems for both genders. In contrast, a positive parental bond with one's father significantly mediated the positive effects of authoritative fathering o

When Adolescents Become Dads: A Clinical-Qualitative Study on the Experience of Male Adolescents Attending a Prenatal Care Service.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescent pregnancy has garnered public interest due to its implications for health, social dynamics, and economic outcomes. Fatherhood contributes to the formation of the identity of young men, particularly during their transition to adulthood. Prenatal care presents a valuable opportunity to involve adolescent fathers in parenting and supporting their pregnant partners. This study aims to investigate how adolescent fathers perceive fatherhood while attending a specialized prenatal clinic. METHODS: This qualitative study focused on 14 expectant adolescent fathers aged up to 19 y

Longitudinal measurement equivalence of subjective language brokering experiences scale in Mexican American adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Language brokering occurs frequently in immigrant families and can have significant implications for the well-being of family members involved. The present study aimed to develop and validate a measure that can be used to assess multiple dimensions of subjective language brokering experiences among Mexican American adolescents. METHOD: Participants were 557 adolescent language brokers (54.2% female, Mage.wave1 = 12.96, SD = .94) in Mexican American families. RESULTS: Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, we were able to identify 7 reliable subscales of language broke

The Meaning of the Sperm Donor for Heterosexual Couples: Confirming the Position of the Father.

In the literature, relatively little attention has been paid to the meaning of donor involvement in the intimate couple dyad. The current study aimed to enrich our understanding of couples' meaning-making regarding the anonymous sperm donor and how they dealt with the donor involvement. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine couples, who had at least one child conceived through sperm donation. Our thematic analysis showed that the donor conception was seen as a different path to create a normal family. Once the family was formed, most couples avoided talking about the donor becaus

Assessing the supportive care needs of parents with a child with a bleeding disorder using the Parental Needs Scale for Rare Diseases (PNS-RD): A single-centre pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Inherited bleeding disorders are rare, for some such as haemophilia, there is a growing body of evidence about caregiver burden and associated support needs. Whilst for other disorders, which may be present with less clinically significant bleeding, there is a paucity of data about parents support needs. AIMS: To evaluate the supportive care needs of parents of children with a range of inherited bleeding disorders. METHODS: A single-centre pilot study using the validated Parental Needs Scale for Rare Diseases to measure the overall support needs of parents of children with a bl

[Analysis of pathogenic variants of USH2A gene in a child with Usher syndrome type II].

OBJECTIVE: To detect pathogenic variant in a child featuring Usher syndrome type II. METHODS: Peripheral blood samples of the child and his parents were collected for the analysis of variants of hearing impairment-related genes. The findings were verified in 100 individuals with normal hearing. RESULTS: The child was found to harbor compound heterozygous variants of the USH2A gene, namely c.8224-1G>C in intron 41 and c.5678C>G(p.Ser1893X) in exon 28, which were inherited respectively from his mother and father. Based on the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics standards and guid

Parent and child anxiety sensitivity: relationship to children's experimental pain responsivity.

UNLABELLED: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) or fear of anxiety sensations has been linked to childhood learning history for somatic symptoms, suggesting that parental AS may impact children's responses to pain. Using structural equation modeling, we tested a conceptual model in which parent AS predicted child AS, which in turn predicted a hypothesized latent construct consisting of children's pain intensity ratings for 3 laboratory pain tasks (cold pressor, thermal heat, and pressure). This conceptual model was tested in 211 nonclinical parent-child pairs (104 girls, 107 boys; mean age 12.4 years; 17

Individual and additive effects of mothers' and fathers' chronic pain on health outcomes in young adults with a childhood history of functional abdominal pain.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of mothers' and fathers' chronic pain on health outcomes in adult sons and daughters with a childhood history of functional abdominal pain (FAP). METHOD: Adults (n = 319; Mean age = 22.09 years) with a childhood history of FAP reported parental history of chronic pain and their own current health (chronic pain, somatic symptoms, disability, use of medication and health care, illness-related job loss). RESULTS: Positive histories of maternal and paternal chronic pain were each associated with poorer health in sons and daughters, regardless of child or parent gen

Kell alloimmunization, hemolytic disease of the newborn, and perinatal management.

The relative frequency of Kell (K:1) antibodies in pregnant women and a series of cases of Kell hemolytic disease of newborns were evaluated to review the strategy of managing potential disease. Among reproductive-aged women, Kell antibodies are about 60% as frequent as Rho (D) antibodies, but Kell disease is only 3% as common as Rho hemolytic disease. The reason is related to frequent transfusion-alloimmunization by Kell antigen and the low frequency of the K:1 gene among fathers. Kell hemolysis is severe in about half of cases. Amniocentesis is indicated in only a few circumstances: previous

Stillbirth in relation to maternal country of birth and other migration related factors: a population-based study in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Migrant women's overall increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes is well known. The aim of this study was to investigate possible associations between stillbirth and maternal country of birth and other migration related factors (paternal origin, reason for immigration, length of residence and birthplace of firstborn child) in migrant women in Norway. METHODS: Nationwide population-based study including births to primiparous and multiparous migrant women (n = 198,520) and non-migrant women (n = 1,156,444) in Norway between 1990 and 2013. [The body as a third--processes of psychosomatic triangulation using the example of adolescence].

One of the earliest developmental tasks of childhood is the child's possession of its own body, which it formerly had shared with its mother, and which it more and more can experience as belonging to himself. What is called the "psychosomatic triangulation" requires the mother's internal handing over of the responsibility for its body increasingly to the child. For a while the body can play the role of a third between mother and child until in the adolescence the young person completely takes responsibility for his body. There are three ways which can lead to the development of psychosomatic s

Gender aspects of parents' needs of schizophrenia patients.

BACKGROUND: Most studies about the problems and needs of schizophrenia carers included only one care-giving relative, usually the patients' mothers. METHODS: 101 mothers and fathers of the same patients suffering from schizophrenia were included into this study. Their needs were assessed by means of the "Carers' Needs Assessment for Schizophrenia". RESULTS: Mothers reported significantly more often problems than fathers concerning stress due to earlier life events and burn-out. Mothers needed interventions such as individual psychoeducation or family counselling more than twice as often as f

From parental childhood physical maltreatment to preschool children's physical and relational aggression in China: A dyadic analysis of parental corporal punishment as a mediator.

BACKGROUND: Emerging research has documented the intergenerational effect of parental childhood maltreatment on children's aggressive behaviors, including physical and relational aggression. However, existing research on mediating mechanisms has largely been confined to individual-level analyses, overlooking the dyadic dynamics between mothers and fathers. OBJECTIVE: The present study examined whether parental corporal punishment mediated the association between parents' childhood physical maltreatment (CPM) and child aggression using the actor-partner interdependence mediation model (APIMeM)

Association Between Caregiver Stress and Behavioral Problems in the Children of Incarcerated Fathers in Hong Kong.

Objectives Caregivers of children with incarcerated parents have received little attention in the literature, though they face unique incarceration-related challenges. General caregiver research has highlighted associations between caregiver distress and children's behavioral problems, even implying that the depressive tendencies of caregivers can be 'transmitted'. The current study investigated the applicability of this notion to caregivers responsible for children of incarcerated fathers. Methods Fifty-four female caregivers of children with incarcerated parents were recruited via collaborat

Including the fathers' perspective in holistic care. Part 1: Findings on the fathers' experience with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

There is scant work completed on the fathers' experience with the treatment for childhood cancer. The present discussion seeks to make a contribution to deepening our holistic understanding of paediatric treatment for leukaemia by presenting findings on the paternal involvement in, and experience of, treatment for paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). The understanding will be extended in Part 2 by a detailed examination of specific issues associated with the fathers' hospital experience and in particular, the difficulties they face with restraining their child-patient for treatment.

Microcephaly and family dynamics: fathers' perceptions of their children's disability.

The family is a key pillar in an individual's psychological life, influencing behavior patterns, feelings of social belonging, and emotional health. The family structure can be shaken by the arrival of an infant with microcephaly associated with the Zika virus, defined in newborn boys as head circumference less than or equal to 31.9cm and in newborn girls as less than or equal to 31.5cm. The study analyzes the impact of an infant's diagnosis of microcephaly on the paternal function. Interviews were held with five fathers of children with microcephaly from three communities in rural Paraíba Sta

Familial risk factors associated with intrafamilial and extrafamilial sexual abuse of three to five year old girls.

This study intended to identify familial risk factors which differentiate sexually abused young girls from nonabused girls and, further, young victims of intrafamilial from those of extrafamilial sexual abuse. The subjects were 112 girls aged three to five years and their families. Forty-two were the victims of intrafamilial sexual abuse and 28 were victims of extrafamilial sexual abuse while 42 girls were not the victims of abuse. The three groups of girls were matched for age. Comparisons indicated that the families of abused girls had less harmony and stability in the marital unit and were

Engaging fathers to strengthen the impact of early home visitation on physical child abuse risk: Findings from the dads matter-HV randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing recognition of the importance of fathers in child abuse risk, the field of perinatal home visitation has only begun to consider fathers' roles in the implementation of such services. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the effectiveness of Dads Matter-HV ("DM-HV"), a father-inclusion enhancement to home visitation, and hypothesized mediators of impact. METHODS: A multisite cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted with 17 home visiting program teams serving 204 families across study conditions. Anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors: a comparison of anxious mothers and fathers.

The majority of research identifying anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors has been conducted with mothers, leaving a gap in current knowledge about the role of fathers' parenting behaviors. In an attempt to fill this gap, this study compared anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors of anxious mothers and fathers. Parents completed self-report measures of parenting behavior and independent coders rated parenting behaviors (i.e., overcontrol, granting of autonomy, warmth, hostility, anxious behavior) of mothers (n = 34) and fathers (n = 21) during a challenging parent-child interaction task (child
