Couples' relationship affects mothers' and fathers' anxiety and depression trajectories over the transition to parenthood.

BACKGROUND: The association between the couple relationship and the mothers' and fathers' psychological adjustment to the transition to parenthood has been examined in the literature. However, the direction of effects between these variables has not been extensively explored. This study aimed to assess the direction of effects between mothers' and fathers' positive and negative interactions and anxiety and depression symptoms trajectories over the transition to parenthood. METHODS: A sample of 129 couples (N = 258) completed self-report measures of positive and negative interactions, anxiety …

The Participation of Mothers, Fathers, and Siblings in Family-Based Treatment for Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

In family-based treatment (FBT) for adolescent anorexia nervosa, all family members are encouraged to attend sessions with the understanding that absences negatively impact treatment. There are, however, many obstacles to family members' attendance, and there is no research to indicate whether family member attendance improves treatment outcomes. We examined attendance patterns of 198 families who participated in FBT at a specialist pediatric eating disorders program and assessed the extent to which participation by mothers (n = 194), fathers (n = 175), and siblings (n = 165; 50% female) predi…

Fathers make a difference: positive relationships with mother and baby in relation to infant colic.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological factors like depression, anxiety and stress have been associated with infant fussiness or colic. However, little research exists on whether positive factors such as social support and the happiness of the mother-partner relationship are associated with lower rates of infant fussiness or colic. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between infant colic and three types of maternal support: general maternal social support (during pregnancy and post partum), the happiness of the mother-partner relationship (during pregnancy and post partum) and partner inv

Affective Awareness in Parenting of Fathers with Co-Occurring Substance Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence.

PURPOSE: Few studies have examined the parenting of fathers with co-occurring Substance Abuse (SA) and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) problems. None have specifically interviewed men with these co-occurring issues using qualitative methods about their reflective functioning in relation to their children. This qualitative study was designed to provide evidence of the reflective capacity of fathers with co-occurring SA and IPV. APPROACH: To assess this, men were asked to describe examples of negative emotions they experienced as parents and how they perceived their children responded to those …

Fathers' emotional awareness and children's empathy and externalizing problems: the role of intimate partner violence.

Emerging evidence suggests that fathers, more so than mothers, socialize emotions in a gender-stereotyped manner. Gender-stereotyped emotion socialization may be particularly pronounced in men perpetrating intimate partner violence (IPV), and may be detrimental to child adjustment, particularly for boys. This study explored the relation between fathers' socialization of children's emotions and child adjustment in families where IPV is present. We hypothesized that in families where there is IPV, fathers' awareness of their children's sadness and fear will be associated with negative child outc…

The paternal component of the "healthy migrant" effect: fathers' natality and infants' low birth weight.

This study examines the predictors of birth outcomes among women of European and African ancestry and considers the birthplace of the babies' fathers (foreign born vs. native born) as a protective factor. This is a secondary data analysis of 146,431 singleton births among women of European and African ancestry, both native-born and foreign-born, in a 21 birth hospital region of Central New York State from 1996 to 2003. Foreign born fathers were found to have 15% fewer low birth weight infants than US-born fathers, after controlling for the race and birthplace of the mother, tobacco use and Med…

Impact of fathers on daughters' age at menarche: a genetically and environmentally controlled sibling study.

Girls growing up in homes without their biological fathers tend to go through puberty earlier than their peers. Whereas evolutionary theories of socialization propose that this relation is causal, it could arise from environmental or genetic confounds. To distinguish between these competing explanations, the authors used a genetically and environmentally controlled sibling comparison design to examine the effects of differential exposure to family disruption/father absence in a community sample of sister pairs. As specified by evolutionary causal theories, younger sisters had earlier menarche …

Characteristics of fathers who have children with fetal alcohol syndrome or incomplete fetal alcohol syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Determine alcohol use, referrals to treatment, receiving treatment, and medical problems related to alcohol among fathers who have children with FAS or incomplete FAS. METHODS: Fathers who had American Indian children with FAS (Study 1) or incomplete FAS (Study 2) were compared with fathers whose children did not have FAS. RESULTS: About half of case and control fathers had alcohol use and alcohol-related medical problems documented in their medical records. Case fathers were more likely to receive alcohol treatment and have injuries related to alcohol abuse. CONCLUSION: Signifi…

Preadolescent children of substance-dependent fathers with antisocial personality disorder: psychiatric disorders and problem behaviors.

We compared psychiatric disorders and problem behavior scores in pre-adolescent children of fathers with alcohol or other drug dependence and ASP (SD+/ASP+), children whose fathers had substance dependence without ASP (SD+/ASP-), and children whose fathers were without either disorder (SD-/ASP-). SD+/ASP+ children showed elevated rates of major depression, conduct disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and separation anxiety disorder when compared to SD+/ASP- and SD-/ASP- children. SD+/ASP+ children had higher internalizing and externalizing problem …

Associations between clinic-referred boys and their fathers on childhood inattention-overactivity and aggression dimensions.

The question asked in this study of 70 clinically referred 6- to 12-year-old boys with behavior problems was whether or not childhood inattention-overactivity and aggression are transmitted specifically from biological fathers to sons. Fathers' self-reported childhood inattention-overactivity on a retrospectively valid measure was exclusively associated with parents' ratings of their sons' current attention problems on the Mothers' Operational Measure for Subgrouping (MOMS), the Revised Child Behavior Checklist (RCBCL), and an approximated DSM-IV inattention dimension. Fathers' self-reported c…

Impact of paternity leave on the health of fathers and their families: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: As of 2024, paid paternity leave was available in 102 countries worldwide. However, the accessibility and methods of taking paternity leave are influenced by cultural background and individual values, leading to variations in uptake rate. Both positive and negative effects of paternity leave have been reported on the health of fathers, partners and children. A comprehensive understanding of this topic is essential for medical professionals supporting fathers undertaking childcare. The aim of this review is to identify and provide an overview of research related to the impact of p…

Antônio Austregésilo Rodrigues de Lima: Founding father of neurology in Brazil.

Antonio Austregésilo Rodrigues de Lima (1876-1960), the founding father of Brazilian neurology and a conceptual father of Brazilian neurosurgery, occupied a unique position in the early development of movement disorder research. In 1912, Austregésilo expanded the reflexogenic zone of pyramidal signs beyond the plantar response, broadening the clinical understanding of the Babinski phenomenon. In 1924, he described a case of hemiparesis and hemichorea associated with a caudate nucleus lesion, proposing a regulatory role for the striatum and offering an early anatomoclinical interpretation of st

Father Involvement and Children's Social Behavior: A Three-Level Meta-Analysis.

The relationship between father involvement and child development has received increasing attention. This study employed a three-level meta-analytic model with the aims of clarifying the relationship between father involvement and children's social behaviors (positive/negative) and analyzing the factors influencing the differences in this relationship. Through literature retrieval and screening, 37 studies were included in this research, and a total of 249 effect sizes were extracted. The results of the meta-analysis show that there is a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.203) between father

Father Involvement and Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students' Vocational Identity Development.

Vocational identity development is a crucial yet underexplored aspect of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students' education and career progression. This study investigates the role of father involvement in shaping DHH students' vocational identity, focusing on the mediating effects of internal (self-determination) and external (social competence) factors. Using data from 1,003 DHH university students across China, the results revealed that father involvement significantly enhances vocational identity (β = 2.273, p < .001). Specifically, it positively impacts self-determination (β = 1.810, p <

Epigenetic aging and fecundability: the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

STUDY QUESTION: Is there an association between male or female epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) or deceleration (EAD) and fecundability? SUMMARY ANSWER: We do not find compelling evidence of an association between EAA or EAD and fecundability. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Prior research has shown that female accelerated epigenetic aging is associated with unfavorable clinical fecundity outcomes and use of in vitro fertilization, and that epigenetic aging in sperm cells is associated with unfavorable sperm parameters. Studies of epigenetic aging and fecundability among individuals who conceive nat

The nature and nurture of resilience-reactions of trizygotic triplet minors to their father's death.

BACKGROUND: Parental bereavement during childhood is associated with an elevated risk for the development of psychiatric problems. This paper seeks to provide insight into the adjustment process of trizygotic triplets dealing with their father's death, thus, trying to give an impression of the individual nature of grief and resilience. METHODS: We examined 11-year-old trizygotic triplets (2 boys and 1 girl) concerning behavioral problems (CBCL/6-18R, YSR/11-18R), posttraumatic stress disorder (UCLA PTSD Index for DSM‑5, UPID), depression ("Depressionsinventar für Kinder und Jugendliche," DIKJ

Phanor L. Perot Jr.: South Carolina's father of academic neurosurgery.

Phanor Leonidas Perot Jr., MD, PhD (1928-2011), was a gifted educator and pioneer of academic neurosurgery in South Carolina. As neurosurgical resident and then as a junior faculty member at the Montreal Neurological Institute, he advanced understandings of both epilepsy and spinal cord injury under Wilder Penfield, William Cone, and Theodore Rasmussen. In 1968, he moved to Charleston to lead neurosurgery. From his time spent with master physicians such as Isidor Ravdin and Wilder Penfield, Perot himself became "the ultimate teacher." His research spanned the fields of epilepsy to torticollis

Paleopathology of the skull of Santorio Santorio, father of modern clinical experimental physiology.

The University of Padua (Italy) preserves the skull of Santorio Santorio, father of the modern clinical experimental physiology. A recent study performed with modern anthropological methods and medical instruments (CT scan) revealed the presence of a lobular formation in the left temporal bone, with an irregular morphology, internal bone sequestrum, a well-defined non-continuous sclerosis and both internal and external thinning of the cranial plate. Three oval depressions observed in the cranial vault, edentulism and moderate osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint were also investigated

[Becoming a father in the face of symbolic wounds in filiation: a case of male infertility].

With the intention of having a child and the subsequent question of filiation, "becoming a mother" as well as "becoming a father" always involve a risk. In both men and women, the plan to have a child or to become pregnant can lead to the revival of unresolved conflicts that can question the very organisation of their being. Sterility then comes as a defence against the risk of collapse.
