Fish Skin Grafts with Omega-3 for Treatment of Chronic Wounds: Exploring the Role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Wound Healing and A Review of Clinical Healing Outcomes.

Chronic, non-healing wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers, have a significant economic impact on healthcare and are associated with elevated patient morbidity. Among the toolset of treatment options available to clinicians, skin grafts from other species (xenografts) are often used to promote wound closure. While porcine xenografts have been the most used skin xenograft over the years, acellular fish skin grafts from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) have steadily gained traction in usage. Unlike other skin grafts, acellular fish skin grafts have a substantial lipid profile pri

Effect of dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid sources on PUVA-induced cutaneous toxicity and tumorigenesis in the hairless mouse.

Because of concern about psoralen-induced phototoxicity and photocarcinogenesis, we investigated the effects of dietary lipids in a mouse model in which 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) and UVA (PUVA) therapy has been shown to be carcinogenic. SKH-Hr-1 hairless albino mice were fed diets containing either omega-3 or omega-6 fatty-acid sources (menhaden oil and corn oil, respectively). After 2 weeks on the diets, the mice were treated topically with 8-MOP and then exposed to UVA (5 J/cm2). Mice receiving the omega-3 fatty-acid source exhibited a marked decrease in inflammatory response and a more rapi

Effects of omega-3 and -6 polyunsaturated fatty acids on ovine follicular cell steroidogenesis, embryo development and molecular markers of fatty acid metabolism.

We previously reported increased follicular fluid progesterone (P(4)) concentrations in ewes fed an n-3 compared to an n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-enriched diet, but detected no differential effect of n-3 and n-6 PUFA-enriched high-density lipoproteins (HDL) on granulosa cell (GC) steroidogenesis in vitro. Moreover, net n-6 PUFA-enriched HDL reduced early embryo development, but in the absence of a net uptake of FA. Consequently, we hypothesised that a) effects of n-3 PUFA on ovarian steroidogenesis are mediated by theca rather than GCs and b) during embryo culture lipids are acquire

The relationship between intake of dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and sleep quality in older adults with diabetes: A hospital-based analysis.

This hospital-based study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary omega-3 (DHA, EPA) and omega-6 (linoleic acid) fatty acid intake and sleep quality in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), addressing gaps in research on habitual (non-supplemental) intake patterns and their associations with sleep disturbances in this high-risk population. A case-control study included 193 hospitalized participants, divided into with sleep impairment (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI ≥5) and without sleep impairment (PSQI <5) groups. Dietary intake was assessed via a validated 14

Ratio of Omega-6/Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Associated With Somatic and Depressive Symptoms in People With Painful Temporomandibular Disorder and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Somatic symptom disturbance is among the strongest predictors of painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Related psychological constructs, such as anxiety and depression, respond therapeutically to omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in clinical trials. This cross-sectional study investigated associations between the omega-6/omega-3 PUFA ratio and somatic symptom disturbance and depressive symptoms in a community-based sample of 501 adults and determined whether these associations differed between adults with and without TMD or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Combination of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Valproic Acid in Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder: A Follow-Up Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Some evidence of efficacy has been found for omega-3 fatty acids in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). In a previous 12-week randomized trial we assessed the efficacy of the combination of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with valproic acid, in comparison with valproic acid monotherapy, in 43 BPD outpatients. Combined therapy was superior to valproic acid monotherapy (the control group) in the treatment of some BPD symptoms: impulsive-behavioral dyscontrol, outbursts of anger, and self-harm. The present study is a 24-week f

Omega-3 fatty acids, specialized pro-resolving mediators, and depression: A mechanistic meta-analysis of precursors and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), exhibit adjunctive antidepressant efficacy despite negligible detectable levels in the brain. Emerging evidence implicates specialized pro‑resolving mediators (SPMs); bioactive n-3 PUFA metabolites offer a coherent pathway by actively resolving inflammation, enhancing tissue repair, and supporting neuronal function. To test whether n‑3 PUFA supplementation activates pro‑resolving biology in humans, this meta‑analysis quantified effects on circulating SPM precursors. METHODS: We systematically

Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Tobacco Craving in Tobacco Users: A Single-blind, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use and its smoke produces oxidative stress in the body, which eventually triggers cell damage by lipid peroxidation. Smokers report lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) in their serum as compared to nonsmokers. Omega-3 deficiency impairs neurotransmission, resulting in hypofunctioning of the mesocortical system, which is a reward and dependency system that can raise tobacco cravings, disrupting tobacco quitting efforts. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) regulates stress, anxiety, and negative emotions that are associated with tobacco urges. Limited research ha

Adolescent Dietary Supplementation of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Alleviates PTSD-Like Fear Memory and Affective Dysregulation in Rats.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder affecting approximately 3.9% of individuals worldwide over their lifetimes. Since adolescence is characterized by ongoing brain maturation and increased responsiveness to environmental stressors, this developmental stage may provide an important window for PTSD intervention. Growing evidence supports an association between ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and the restoration of stress-induced neural damage. However, how ω-3 PUFA supplementa

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids attenuate cognitive impairment via the gut-brain axis in diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction rats.

Diabetes-related cognitive dysfunction (DACD) is a comorbidity of type 2 diabetes that has a negative effect on patients' quality of life. Research has indicated that disruption of the gut microbiota (GM) may be linked to dementia with altered cognitive performance. Conversely, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) may reverse DACD. The present study aimed to assess the effects of an n-3 PUFA intervention and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) on high-fat and streptozotocin-induced DACD model rats. In DACD rats, n-3 PUFA treatment restored fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels and c

Fighting Autism with Fatty Acids: Maternal Omega-3 Shields the Developing Brain from VPA-Induced Behavioral and Neurochemical Damage.

Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder is a psychological condition characterized by symptoms such as repetitive stereotypic behaviors and social interaction/communication difficulties. It is known that omega-3 deficiency during brain maturation may cause learning disabilities and motor impairment. Therefore, we examined the effects of omega-3 treatment during gestation and/or lactation on autism-related behavioral and molecular deficits in a valproic acid (VPA)-rat model. Methods: Female Wistar rats were divided into five groups: control, VPA (500 mg/kg at G12.5), VPA+omega-3 (gestat

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids alleviate hydrogen sulfide-induced blood-testis barrier disruption in the testes of adult mice.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous intracellular signal transducer, participates in multiple physiological and pathological conditions, including reproductive conditions, and disrupts spermatogenesis. The blood-testis barrier (BTB) plays a vital role in spermatogenesis. However, the effect of H2S on the BTB and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. Herein, we examined the effect of H2S and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) on the BTB and testicular functions. ICR male mice were randomly divided into the following groups: control, H2S exposure, and H2S exposure with ω-3 PUFAs in

Expert Opinion on Benefits of Long-Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA and EPA) in Aging and Clinical Nutrition.

Life expectancy is increasing and so is the prevalence of age-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Consequently, older people and patients present with multi-morbidities and more complex needs, putting significant pressure on healthcare systems. Effective nutrition interventions could be an important tool to address patient needs, improve clinical outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Inflammation plays a central role in NCDs, so targeting it is relevant to disease prevention and treatment. The long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 LCPUFAs) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and

Docosanoids and elovanoids from omega-3 fatty acids are pro-homeostatic modulators of inflammatory responses, cell damage and neuroprotection.

The functional significance of the selective enrichment of the omega-3 essential fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22C and 6 double bonds) in cellular membrane phospholipids of the nervous system is being clarified by defining its specific roles on membrane protein function and by the uncovering of the bioactive mediators, docosanoids and elovanoids (ELVs). Here, we describe the preferential uptake and DHA metabolism in photoreceptors and brain as well as the significance of the Adiponectin receptor 1 in DHA retention and photoreceptor cell (PRC) survival. We now know that this integral me

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Disease: Summary of the 2016 Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality Evidence Review.

We summarize the 2016 update of the 2004 Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality's evidence review of omega-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The overall findings for the effects of marine oil supplements on intermediate CVD outcomes remain largely unchanged. There is high strength of evidence, based on numerous trials, of no significant effects of marine oils on systolic or diastolic blood pressures, but there are small, yet statistically significant increases in high density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. The clinical significance of these
