Cross-Sectional Analysis of Infant Diet, Outcomes, Consumer Behavior and Parental Perspectives to Optimize Infant Feeding in Response to the 2022 U.S. Infant Formula Shortage.

UNLABELLED: In May of 2022, millions of U.S. parents encountered uncertainty in safely feeding their infants due to the infant formula shortage. METHODS: An anonymous, electronic, cross-sectional, retrospective survey was used. RESULTS: U.S. parents (n = 178) whose infants were ~10 weeks old during the shortage completed the survey. Of parents, 81% switched formulas during the shortage, 87% switched because they could not find the formula they typically used, 34% switched 3-5 times, 29% of parents visited ≥4 stores/24 h and 26% of parents traveled >20 miles/24 h to purchase formula. Use of i

Dopaminergic modulation of effort-related choice behavior as assessed by a progressive ratio chow feeding choice task: pharmacological studies and the role of individual differences.

Mesolimbic dopamine (DA) is involved in behavioral activation and effort-related processes. Rats with impaired DA transmission reallocate their instrumental behavior away from food-reinforced tasks with high response requirements, and instead select less effortful food-seeking behaviors. In the present study, the effects of several drug treatments were assessed using a progressive ratio (PROG)/chow feeding concurrent choice task. With this task, rats can lever press on a PROG schedule reinforced by a preferred high-carbohydrate food pellet, or alternatively approach and consume the less-prefer

Effect of calcium salt of flaxseed oil and zinc-methionine supplementation on growth performance, digestibility, feeding behavior, and rumen and blood parameters of fattening lambs.

The present experiment was aimed at evaluating the effect of using the Ca-salt of flaxseed oil (CFO) in diets containing different levels of zinc by including zinc-methionine supplementation (ZMT) on the performance, feeding behavior, rumen and blood parameters in fattening lambs. For this purpose, 44 3-month-old lambs were allocated to one of four treatments: a diet without CFO and ZMT (NCFO-NZMT), a diet containing 0.083% ZMT without CFO (NCFO-ZMT), a diet containing 3% CFO without ZMT (CFO-NZMT), and a diet containing 3% CFO and 0.083% ZMT (CFO-ZMT). The duration of the experiment was 84 da…

Fluoxetine exposure during pregnancy and lactation: Effects on acute stress response and behavior in the novelty-suppressed feeding are age and gender-dependent in rats.

Fluoxetine (FLX) is commonly used to treat anxiety and depressive disorders in pregnant women. Since FLX crosses the placenta and is excreted in milk, maternal treatment with this antidepressant may expose the fetus and neonate to increased levels of serotonin (5-HT). Long-term behavioral abnormalities have been reported in rodents exposed to higher levels of 5-HT during neurodevelopment. In this study we evaluated if maternal exposure to FLX during pregnancy and lactation would result in behavioral and/or stress response disruption in adolescent and adult rats. Our results indicate that expos

The effects of pelleted dried distillers grains and solubles fed with different forage concentrations on rumen fermentation, feeding behavior, and milk production of lactating dairy cows.

The physical form of feeds can influence dairy cow chewing behavior, rumen characteristics, and ruminal passage rate. Changing particle size of feeds is usually done through grinding or chopping forages, but pelleting feed ingredients also changes particle size. Our objective was to determine if pelleted dried distillers grains and solubles (DDGS) affected the feeding value for lactating dairy cattle. Seven lactating Jersey cows that were each fitted with a ruminal cannula averaging (± standard deviation) 56 ± 10.3 d in milk and 462 ± 75.3 kg were used in a crossover design. The treatments con

Prevalence of pica and rumination behaviors in German children aged 7-14 and their associations with feeding, eating, and general psychopathology: a population-based study.

Despite potentially severe medical consequences of pica and rumination disorder (RD), little is known about their prevalence and association with other psychopathology in childhood. As a part of a larger population-based study, 804 children aged 7-14 years and their parents were asked about their experience of pica and RD behaviors, and associated eating, feeding and general psychopathology. A total of 12.31 and 11.49% of the participants reported having engaged in pica or RD behaviors, respectively, at least once. Recurring pica or RD behaviors had been experienced by 4.98 and 1.49% of the pa

Changes in feeding, social, and lying behaviors in dairy cows with metritis following treatment with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug as adjunctive treatment to an antimicrobial.

Dairy cows with metritis display sickness behaviors, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) have the potential to reduce these responses. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in feeding, social, and lying behaviors in dairy cows with metritis that had been treated with the NSAID meloxicam. After parturition, cows were housed in a dynamic, mixed-parity group of 20 animals with access to 12 electronic feed bins, 2 electronic water bins, and 24 lying stalls in a freestall pen. Every third day after parturition, vaginal discharge was evaluated to diagnose metritis based

The effects of restraint using self-locking stanchions on dairy cows in relation to behavior, feed intake, physiological parameters, health, and milk yield.

Holstein cows (n = 64) ranging from peak to end lactation were restrained in self-locking stanchions (i.e., head locks) for approximately 4 h/d for four periods in a modified switchback design. Milk yield, milk fat percentage, somatic cell count, and dry matter intake and dry matter intake were unaffected by restraint. Milk protein percentage was significantly lower for cows that were restrained. Plasma cortisol concentrations and the ratio of neutrophils to mononuclear cells were not significantly different between restrained and unrestrained (control) cows. No difference in the incidence of

Electrophysiological analyses of serotonergic actions on neurons in hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus in vitro: receptor subtypes involved and implications for regulation of feeding and lordosis behaviors.

Previously, we have shown that serotonin (5-HT) can inhibit, excite, or biphasically inhibit and excite individual neurons of the ventromedial nucleus (VMN) in hypothalamic slices from female rats. In the present study, similar in vitro methods were used to further characterize VMN neurons responsive to 5-HT, and to identify the receptor subtypes involved in mediating these 5-HT actions. Results from a dose-response experiment indicate that increasing the dose of 5-HT can transform an inhibitory response into a biphasic or even an excitatory response. This indicates that modulation of 5-HT rel

Does Pelleted Starter Feed Restriction and Provision of Total Mixed Ration Ad Libitum during Weaning Influence the Behavior of Dairy Calves?

Currently, in dairy farming, there is growing concern for the welfare of calves during the critical period between the separation from their dams and weaning. During weaning, rationed feeding is a practice used to improve feed efficiency and control the calves' growth, but it could also have negative consequences associated with hunger and feed restriction behavior. One such consequence could be the performance by calves of stereotyped behaviors indicative of poor welfare, such as non-nutritive oral behaviors. We hypothesized that making a Total Mixed Ration (TMR) available to calves, in addit

The Molluscicidal Activity of Green Synthesized Copper Oxide-Based Annona squamosa Seed Extract Nanoparticles on the Feeding Behavior, Biochemical, Molecular, and Immunohistochemical Alterations of Biomphalaria alexandrina Snails.

Because of their low ecological impact, plant molluscicides have garnered much attention. The work aimed to find out if Annona squamosa (AS) seed extract has a molluscicidal impact on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails and enhances this extract by adding CuO nanoparticles (NPs). Using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and PANalytical X'Pert PRO X-ray diffractometer (XRD), the presence of the green A. squamosa-based CuO NPs (AS-CuO NPs) was confirmed. After 24 h of exposure, the half-lethal concentration (LC50) of AS-CuO NPs was more toxic to mature B. a

Research note: Transient behavioral effects of feed restriction in a white feathered laying hen pullet strain - Assessment of frustration and locomotor energy expenditure.

Quantitative feed restriction is used to effectively manipulate layer pullet growth trajectories in research and rarely in commercial practice. In this study, we asked whether this intervention impairs pullet welfare or affects locomotor energy expenditure. Pullets were raised in furnished floor pens in a split-plot design: Two ages at photostimulation (18 weeks: early-PS vs 20 weeks: late-PS) with two feeding regimens each (ad libitum: AL vs 20%-restricted: R) between 12 and 21 weeks.
