Infant feeding experiences and support needs in women with severe mental illness: A qualitative study in England.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding has significant health benefits for mothers and babies. Severe mental illness (SMI) affects around 3 % of women giving birth but very little is currently known about their infant feeding experiences. Due to a paucity of evidence, support needs are largely unknown. AIM: To explore the infant feeding experiences and supports needs of women with SMI. METHODS: Semi structured interviews were conducted online and in person from 2022 to 2023 with 20 women under care of perinatal mental health teams in England. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and anonymised. Re

Feeding patterns and the risk of perianal abscess in early infancy: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is widely recognized as protective against infectious morbidity in infancy, largely through immunologic, anti-inflammatory, and microbiome-mediated mechanisms. Whether exclusive breastfeeding also influences the risk of perianal abscess, a relatively common condition in early infancy, remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between infant feeding patterns and the development of perianal abscess. METHODS: This retrospective case–control study with age-frequency matching was conducted at a tertiary pediatric surgery center and included male infants

Infant feeding among women with a history of breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Health professional organizations recommend exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, but there are mothers, such as those with a history of breast cancer, who are unable to exclusively provide their milk for their infants. Minimal research has been published on mothers' experience with lactation, breastfeeding, and bottle-feeding after breast cancer. This study explored mothers' perspectives of infant feeding after a history of breast cancer. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were completed with 20 mothers who had experience with infant feeding after breast cancer, including exclusive bre

Feeding protocol deviation after esophagectomy: A retrospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Esophagectomy is associated with high postoperative morbidity rates, which can result in decreased quality of life and impaired recovery. Implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have made a great impact in optimizing postoperative recovery. However, the best timing to start oral intake is still unclear. Conservative feeding protocols have been developed with a nil-by-mouth period in the first postoperative days to reduce postoperative complication rates (e.g. anastomotic leakage and pneumonia). This study aimed to evaluate adherence to the feeding protoco

The effects of swallowing exercise and non-nutritive sucking exercise on oral feeding readiness in preterm infants: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm infants demonstrate problems with pharyngeal swallowing in addition to sucking problems. Oral motor intervention and nonnutritive sucking (NNS) were introduced for promoting oral feeding skills in preterm infants. NNS cannot cover all the components of oral feeding. In another hand, the swallowing exercise (SE) can accelerate the attainment of independent oral feeding in the preterm infants. The current study sought to examine if a combined program of NNS and SE compared with a program that only involves NNS would be more effective on oral feeding readiness of premature i

Bedside placement of postpyloric feeding tubes.

Postpyloric placement of feeding tubes into the duodenum or jejunum is often recommended to support early feeding, improve tolerance of enteral nutrition, and decrease the risk of aspiration pneumonia. Achieving small bowel feeding tube placement can be a difficult, time-consuming, and costly process that may delay the initiation of enteral nutrition. Various bedside techniques, including air insufflation, pH assisted, and spontaneous passage with or without motility agents are available to facilitate transpyloric feeding tube passage. A discussion of these methods is presented in this article

Erythromycin fails to improve feeding outcome in feeding-intolerant preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Approximately half of extremely low birth weight infants have feeding intolerance, which delays their achievement of full enteral feedings. Erythromycin, a motilin receptor agonist, triggers migrating motor complexes and accelerates gastric emptying in adults with feeding intolerance. Few studies have assessed the efficacy of this drug in preterm infants with established feeding intolerance. This study was designed to assess the efficacy of erythromycin in feeding-intolerant infants, as measured by gastric emptying, maturation of gastrointestinal motor patterns, and time to achieve
