Fiber optic catheters for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal motility disorders are demonstrated in-vitro and in-vivo. Single element catheters have been verified against existing solid state catheters and a multi-element catheter has been demonstrated for localized and full esophageal monitoring. The multi-element catheter consists of a series of closely spaced pressure sensors that pick up the peristaltic wave traveling along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Lung hamartomas are rare benign tumors of the bronchi. Their management consists of bronchoscopic excision or removal through a thoracotomy and bronchotomy whenever there is a large tumor totally obstructing the bronchial lumen. As a lung-sparing procedure is usually the aim, various bronchoplastic techniques have been described, providing a functional lumen of the repaired bronchus. We describe a simple technique that can be safely undertaken to preserve a satisfactory diameter of the bronchus or trachea and prevent a stenosis at the site of repair.

PURPOSE: Fibreoptic intubation (FOI) has become an essential technique in the anesthetic management of patients with difficult airways. Unfortunately, residents may graduate from anesthesiology training programs with insufficient skills in FOI. METHODS: Over a 10-year-period, 536 flexible bronchoscopies were performed under sedation and local anesthesia in 433 children aged from 5 days to 14 years. Nasogastric tube placement is desirable for the short-term administration of calories when oral feeding is not possible. Enteral nutrition is superior to parenteral nutrition. A 15F flexible fiberoptic choledochonephroscope was used to perform bedside flexible cystoscopy in 5 critically ill patients. All 5 patients were receiving pressor agents, and 4 were intubated and dependent on a respirator. A ureteral stent was placed in the renal pelvis in 3 patients. The flexible endoscope enables the urologist to bring diagnostic and therapeutic cystoscopy directly to the bedside.
