All eukaryotic genomes encode multiple members of the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) family, which evolved distinctive structural and functional features in response to specific environmental constraints. Phylogenetic analysis of this protein family thus can inform on genetic and molecular mechanisms that drive species-specific environmental adaptation. Here we use the eukaryotic pathogen Leishmania spp. as a model system to investigate the evolution of the HSP70 protein family in an early-branching eukaryote that is prone to gene amplification and adapts to cytotoxic host environments by stres

Ultrasound (US) imaging is widely used to guide minimally invasive procedures such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), while electromagnetic (EM) tracking can complement US guidance by providing line-of-sight-independent instrument localization. However, US probes may distort the EM tracking field in a probe-dependent manner. This study characterized probe-induced EM interference for a conventional 3D/4D phased-array probe and a handheld wireless probe. Three experiments were conducted using an EM tracking system: spatial mapping of interference along each probe body, assessment of probe-s

OBJECTIVE: Patients with pediatric intestinal failure (IF) depend on parenteral nutrition for growth and survival, but are at risk for complications, such as catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). CRBSI prevention is crucial, as sepsis is an important cause of IF-associated liver disease and mortality. We aim to estimate the pooled effectiveness and safety of ethanol locks (ELs) in comparison with heparin locks (HLs) with regard to CRBSI rate and catheter replacements for pediatric IF patients with chronic parenteral nutrition dependence.
METHODS: A systematic review without langua

BACKGROUND: Dinitrosyl nonheme-iron complexes can appear in cells and tissues overproducing nitric oxide. It is believed that due to their chemical nature these species may be implicated in certain pathophysiological events. We studied the possible role of low molecular mass dinitrosyl iron complexes in the control of noradrenaline release in electrically stimulated rat tail artery.
RESULTS: A model complex, dinitrosyl-iron-thiosulfate (at 1-10 microM) produced a concentration-dependent enhancement of electrical field stimulated [3H]noradrenaline release (up to 2 fold). At the same time, dini

Reliable condition monitoring and fault diagnosis in agricultural machinery depend on interpreting sensor measurements under variable field conditions. Noise, occlusion, changing loads, and sensor degradation can obscure relevant features, while complementary measurements offer opportunities to reduce information gaps. This scoping review synthesizes 147 included evidence sources published from 2014 to early 2026, supplemented by 11 contextual publications. It examines sensing, feature extraction, and information fusion across mechanical modeling and design, perception, automation and control,

Magnetic photonic crystal microspheres (MPCMs) have emerged as a versatile platform for intelligent sensing and display applications, owing to their integration of magnetic actuation with structural coloration. However, their practical implementation is limited by a fundamental structural constraint: most reported MPCMs adopt anisotropic architectures, resulting in angle-dependent optical responses that require continuous magnetic alignment to maintain uniform coloration. Herein, we propose a different structural paradigm based on non-close-packed, optically isotropic MPCMs. Driven by electros

Amyloidosis comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders marked by the extracellular deposition of insoluble protein fibrils, known as amyloids, which can disrupt normal tissue architecture and lead to organ dysfunction. Accurate identification and subtyping of the amyloidogenic protein are critical for clinical management as treatment strategies vary significantly depending on the underlying protein species. While conventional diagnostic tools such as Congo red staining and immunohistochemistry are commonly used, they suffer from limited specificity and antibody availability, often resulting

Inhibitory targeting of the CD40L-CD40 system is a promising therapeutic option in the field of organ transplantation and is also attractive in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. After early complex results with neutralizing CD40L antibodies, it turned out that lack of Fcγ receptor (FcγR)-binding is the crucial factor for the development of safe inhibitory antibodies targeting CD40L or CD40. Indeed, in recent years, blocking CD40 antibodies not interacting with FcγRs, has proven to be well tolerated in clinical studies and has shown initial clinical efficacy. Stimulation of CD40 is also of

Identifying the plastic and stable components of the visual cortex after retinal loss is an important topic in visual neuroscience and neuro-ophthalmology.1-5 Humans with juvenile macular degeneration (JMD) show significant blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) responses in the primary visual area (V1) lesion projection zone (LPZ),6 despite the absence of the feedforward signals from the degenerated retina. Our previous study7 reported that V1 LPZ responds to full-field visual stimuli during the one-back task (OBT), not during passive viewing, suggesting the involvement of task-related feedback

The deletion of T-type Cav3.1 channels may reduce high-fat diet (HFD)-induced weight gain, which correlates positively with obesity and endothelial dysfunction. Therefore, experiments were designed to study the involvement of T-type Cav3.1 channels in HFD-induced endothelial dysfunction in mice. Wildtype (WT) and Cav3.1-/- mice were fed either a normal diet (ND) or an HFD for 8 weeks. Body composition was assessed, and thoracic aortae and mesenteric arteries were harvested for myography to assess endothelium-dependent responses. Changes in intracellular calcium were measured by fluorescence im

We report experimental results which show that the interfacial deformation around glass particles (radius, 200-300 microm) at an oil-water (or air-water) interface is dominated by an electric force, rather than by gravity. It turns out that this force, called for brevity "electrodipping," is independent of the electrolyte concentration in the water phase. The force is greater for oil-water than for air-water interfaces. Under our experimental conditions, it is due to charges at the particle-oil (instead of particle-water) boundary. The derived theoretical expressions, and the experiment, indic

Class I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) have been postulated to play a role in synaptic plasticity. To test the involvement of one member of this class, we have recently generated mutant mice that express no mGluR5 but normal levels of other glutamate receptors. The CNS revealed normal development of gross anatomical features. To examine synaptic functions we measured evoked field EPSPs in the hippocampal slice. Measures of presynaptic function, such as paired pulse facilitation in mutant CA1 neurons, were normal. The response of mutant CA1 neurons to low concentrations of (1S,3R)-1-

Spectral encoding units are pivotal for computationally augmented spectroscopic applications across sensing, measuring, and imaging domains. Recent advancements in miniaturized spectroscopic systems have dramatically reduced the size of spectral encoding units, rendering them increasingly compatible with field-deployable, wearable, and customer platforms. However, the miniaturization of spectral encoding units is often accompanied by the deterioration of manufacturability, stability, and operational bandwidth. Here, we present a single-step approach to inscribe spectral response pixels in lith

Interrupting pathogen transmission between species is a priority strategy to mitigate zoonotic threats. However, avoiding counterproductive interventions requires knowing animal reservoirs of infection and the dynamics of transmission within them, neither of which are easily ascertained from the cross-sectional surveys that now dominate investigations into newly discovered viruses. We used biobanked sera and metagenomic data to reconstruct the transmission of recently discovered bat-associated influenza virus (BIV; H18N11) over 12 years in three zones of Peru. Mechanistic models fit under a Ba

Subcortical reflexive motor responses are under continuous cortical control to produce the most effective behaviour. For example, the excitability of brainstem circuitry subserving the defensive hand-blink reflex (HBR), a response elicited by intense somatosensory stimuli to the wrist, depends on a number of properties of the eliciting stimulus. These include face-hand proximity, which has allowed the description of an HBR response field around the face (commonly referred to as a defensive peripersonal space, DPPS), as well as stimulus movement and probability of stimulus occurrence. However,

Intestinal fibrosis with stricture formation affects up to half of patients with Crohn's disease (CD), resulting in impaired quality of life, increased risk of surgical intervention, and associated patient morbidity. The underlying pathophysiologic mechansisms responsible for initiating and perpetuating intestinal fibrosis are complex, dynamic, and implicate both inflammation-dependent and independent pathways. Previously thought to be an irreversible complication of long-standing inflammation unresponsive to medical therapy, fibrostenotic CD has been traditionally managed with endoscopic or s
