Insights on emotional distress following cancer, sources of support and the unmet needs in a setting with limited supportive care services for people living with cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Delivery of supportive cancer care is often deemed a low priority in resource-limited settings. We aimed to explore the sources of emotional distress, the related support and the unmet needs of cancer survivors in Malaysia, where cancer survivorship services are presently limited. METHOD: Twenty focus group discussions were conducted with 102 cancer patients from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Thematic analyses were performed. RESULTS: Patient narratives suggested that emotional distress arose from direct and indirect stressors. Direct stressors comprised physica

Coping with Job Loss and Reemployment: A Two-Wave Study.

Using a national sample, this study investigated the effects of unemployed workers' coping resources and coping strategy use on reemployment after a three-month period. Based on previous research, it was expected that (1) three types of coping resources (self-esteem, social support, and financial resources) would be positively related to problem-focused coping with job loss, (2) coping resources would be negatively related to emotion-focused coping with job loss, (3) problem-focused coping would be positively related to reemployment, (4) problem-focused coping would be more strongly related to

Financial Health of People Living With Dementia and Their Informal Care Partners: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing body of academic literature focusing on the significant financial burdens placed on people living with cancer, but little evidence exists on the impact of rising costs of care in other vulnerable populations. This financial strain, also known as financial toxicity, can impact behavioral, psychosocial, and material domains of life for people diagnosed with chronic conditions and their care partners. New evidence suggests that populations experiencing health disparities, including those with dementia, face limited access to health care, employment discrimination, i

Real-World Evidence of Disproportionate Financial Toxicity and Health-Related Social Needs Among Adolescents and Young Adults Receiving Care at an NCI-Designated Cancer Center.

Financial toxicity is a significant but often overlooked consequence of cancer for adolescents and young adults (AYAs, 15-39 years old), who face limited savings, unstable employment, and insurance gaps that heighten financial stress. As part of a larger initiative to determine whether our cancer center can use an existing social drivers of health (SDOH) screening process to identify patients who may benefit from targeted supportive interventions, we sought to characterize financial strain, toxicity, and SDOH needs in AYAs treated in our cancer center and compare them to both younger and older

Using Crowdfunding Campaigns to Examine Financial Toxicity and Logistical Burdens Facing Families of Children With Wilms Tumor.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment for pediatric solid tumors is often intense and multidisciplinary and can create a substantial financial burden for families. Assessing these burdens, termed the financial toxicity of treatment, can be difficult. Using Wilms tumor as an example, we evaluated crowdfunding campaigns in an attempt to better understand the impact of economic and logistic challenges associated with pediatric solid tumor care and identify features associated with successful fundraising with this method. METHODS: We used a webscraping algorithm to identify crowdfunding campaigns on GoFundMe.c

Volatility spillover between financial assets and transport energy.

This study examines the dynamics of volatility spillover between financial assets and transport energy. Such spillovers are critical for implementing risk management strategies, supporting energy policymaking, and enabling more effective investment decisions in today's globally integrated financial-energy system. Our study includes financial assets (both non-green and green) and transport energy (fossil fuels and biofuels). We employ Time-Varying Parameter Vector Autoregressive (TVP-VAR) approaches to investigate the volatility between financial assets and transport energy from 2018 to 2023. O

Discontinuation of total parenteral nutrition in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: a Canadian perspective.

Provision of nourishment to terminally ill patients has been a controversial topic in clinical medicine. Determination of the limits of palliative care requires an understanding of the disease process, as well as the boundaries of patient self-determination. With the advent of living wills, the determination of the patient to limit care, including nutrition support, has become socially acceptable. Difficulties arise when there are differences of opinion between the caregiver and the patient. The solutions to these conflicts are often decided in the courtroom, as demonstrated by the Cruzan and

Participant feedback on a health care transition conference for youth with medical complexity.

INTRODUCTION: Each year in the United States, an estimated 1.2 million youth with chronic conditions or functional limitations reach adulthood and must transition from pediatric to adult health care, a process often fragmented by service loss, limited adult providers, and complex waiver and financial systems. The University of Alabama at Birmingham developed the Staging Transition for Every Patient (STEP) Program which includes an annual Healthcare Transition Conference. Here we describe the conference and analyze two years of attendee feedback. METHODS: Conference planning followed an iterat

Psychological recovery after SCAD: Identifying protective and vulnerability factors using cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is associated with substantial psychological sequelae. Although previous studies have identified individual risk factors for poor mental health post-SCAD, none has examined whether protective and vulnerability factors cluster together. This study aimed to identify distinct post-SCAD psychological profiles. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of 263 SCAD survivors recruited from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Arteriopathies and SCAD Cohort (VASC). Participants completed measures of anxiety (GAD-7), depression (PHQ-9), cardiac

Catastrophic out-of-pocket healthcare expenditures among cancer patients receiving systemic therapy and/or radiation therapy in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Cancer imposes a growing health and economic burden in low-resource settings. In Bangladesh, gaps in universal health coverage, inadequate financial protection and substantial reliance on out-of-pocket payments expose cancer-affected households to catastrophic health expenditure (CHE). This study quantified CHE across alternative thresholds, examined associated socioeconomic and clinical factors, and described the financial coping strategies used by cancer-affected households. METHODS: We conducted a facility-based cross-sectional study involving 607 adults receiving systemic ther

Exploring the lived socioeconomic experiences of teen mothers in Rwanda.

Teenage pregnancy is one of the major public health problems worldwide, with the issue more severe in low-and middle-income countries. While poverty is a main risk factor, the negative consequences of teenage pregnancy further perpetuate the cycle of poverty. To support teen mothers, many support programs were created; however, the benefits which reached them were limited. Since social norms vary from community to community, the types of challenges teen mothers face influence the type of support they need. This study explored the firsthand socio-economic experiences of women who underwent teen

Support groups for patients with Graves' disease and other thyroid conditions.

Thyroid foundations and associations provide free information and support for thyroid patients in countries throughout the world. Their efforts save physicians time and increase patient understanding and compliance while reducing anxiety. Personal responsiveness to a patient's concerns is important but costly. Physicians can help by referring patients to local groups, accepting patient referrals from these organizations, and encouraging thyroid patients and organizations to help with financial support.

Spine Surgery Missions in Low-Resource Settings: Practical Considerations and Lessons Learned.

Spine surgery missions in low-resource settings can meaningfully close global gaps in access to care but require careful logistical and relational planning. Drawing on collaborative missions within 2 Jamaican hospital systems under the Back to Healing nonprofit initiative, we review financial realities, logistical barriers, ethical responsibilities, and human dimensions that define high-impact missions. Success depends on financial planning and transparency, equipment logistics, intraoperative adaptability, and operating room throughput, but equally on sustained partnership with host instituti

Financial compensation for deceased organ donation in China.

In March 2010, China launched a pilot programme of deceased donor organ donation in 10 provinces and cities. However, the deceased donor donation rate in China remains significantly lower than in Spain and other Western countries. In order to provide incentive for deceased donor organ donation, five pilot provinces and cities have subsequently launched a financial compensation policy. Financial compensation can be considered to include two main forms, the 'thank you' form and the 'help' form. The 'thank you' form is an expression of gratitude on behalf of the Red Cross Society of China for con

Can we defeat meningococcal disease in low and middle income countries?

The development of multivalent conjugate and protein-based meningococcal vaccines may make global control of meningococcal disease possible. However, achieving control of meningococcal disease in low and middle income countries will be challenging. In low income countries whose vaccination programmes receive financial support from the Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisation, the main challenge is lack of sufficient epidemiological information to allow rational decisions on vaccine introduction to be made and, in these countries, enhanced surveillance is needed. In middle income countr…

[Making financial distress visible: Development and piloting of guidelines for psychosocial counseling in oncology].

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients in Germany are often faced with financial distress associated with their illness, which can impair their quality of life and cause additional distress. Psychosocial counseling centers perceive an increasing demand for counseling, but do not have standardized guidelines for the structuring of counseling on this topic. The aim of the study is to develop a guideline for assessing financial distress and to conduct a pilot in a social services setting. METHODS: Requirements for the guideline were identified in a focus group with social work professionals. The counseling

Racial and ethnic variations in caregiving-related physical, emotional, and financial strain during COVID-19 among those caring for adult cancer patients.

PurposeCancer caregiving is shown to be a burdensome experience in typical times. The purpose of this study was to describe cancer caregivers' emotional, physical, and financial strain during the COVID-19 pandemic and compared to preCOVID-19, and explore racial and ethnic variations in caregiver strain.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional online survey using Lucid, LLC, incorporating quotas for race, ethnicity, gender and age. Caregivers had to be adults living in the USA and currently providing unpaid care to an adult cancer patient (i.e., during COVID-19) and prior to the pandemic. We asses

Domestic Violence Against Men in Canada: An Overlooked but Growing Public Health and Social Concern.

Domestic and intimate partner violence (IPV) in Canada is a complex public health and social issue affecting individuals of all genders, yet male victims remain significantly under-recognized. Although women experience the highest rates and most severe outcomes, growing evidence shows that men also face substantial physical, psychological, emotional, financial, and coercive abuse. Police-reported data from 2022 indicate that one in five IPV victims are male, with a 21% increase in IPV against men and boys since 2014. Social stigma, gender norms, and limited male-focused services contribute to
