Mapping network connection of comorbidity of depression and anxiety symptoms among firefighters exposed to traumatic events: Insights from a network analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Firefighters are prone to mental disorders such as anxiety and depression because they are frequently exposed to trauma, including injury and death. Network analysis is an approach used to depict a holistic view of mental disorders, which is a symptom-oriented method, and argues that the mental structure is likely to arise from the interaction among observable symptoms. Hence, the present study aims to reveal the characteristics of depressive and anxiety symptoms for Chinese firefighters via a network approach. METHOD: We recruited 715 male firefighters (Mage = 26.29, SDage = 5.93)…

Relationship between Body Mass Index and Health and Occupational Performance among Law Enforcement Officers, Firefighters, and Military Personnel: A Systematic Review.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among tactical populations is estimated at 70%-75%, which may negatively impact health and performance. The relationship between BMI and health and performance is well established among the general population, however, literature on such relationships among tactical populations has yet to be reviewed and evaluated. The purpose of this study was to systematically review available literature on the relationship between BMI and health and occupational performance among law enforcement officer, firefighters, and military personnel. After reviewing the liter…

Usefulness of coronary and carotid imaging rather than traditional atherosclerotic risk factors to identify firefighters at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for 45% of deaths in on-duty firefighters, in contrast to 15% of all deaths occurring on conventional jobs. Therefore, with the goal of developing a tailored prevention program, we assessed CVD risk in a cohort of 50 firefighters using imaging and traditional risk factors. Participants were aged ≥40 years without a history of CVD or diabetes. CVD risk was assessed by way of history, physical examination, blood tests, risk scores, coronary artery calcium (CAC), and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). Median age was 46 years; 90% of subjects were men, 92%…

Evaluating the physical demands on firefighters using hand-carried stair descent devices to evacuate mobility-limited occupants from high-rise buildings.

The physical demands on firefighting personnel were investigated when using different types of hand-carried stair descent devices designed for the emergency evacuation of high rise buildings as a function of staircase width and evacuation urgency. Twelve firefighters used three hand-carried stair descent devices during simulated urgent and non-urgent evacuations. The devices were evaluated under three staircase width conditions (0.91, 1.12, and 1.32 m). For comparison, an urgent manual carry was also performed on the 1.12 m wide stairs. Dependent measures included electromyographic (EMG) data,…

Practical guidance for firefighter applicants preparing for cardiorespiratory fitness testing: a secondary analysis of self-reported physical activity levels.

Adequate cardiorespiratory fitness is critical for firefighters since an insufficient level of fitness threatens the integrity of their operations and could be dangerous for their lives. In fact, the leading cause of mortality for on-duty firefighters is not injury but sudden cardiac death. Therefore, to mitigate these risks, potential firefighter recruits are often required to perform a graded exercise test to determine their cardiorespiratory fitness as part of the recruitment process. However, there are currently limited data available to prospective firefighters on the amounts and types of…

Chemical Characterization and Aquatic Toxicity of Firefighting Runoff-Linking Organic Profiling to Multi-Trophic Bioassays in the One Health Framework.

This study investigates the organic chemical content and ecological impact of firefighting runoff collected from real-world fire scenarios. To establish a direct link between chemical composition and environmental hazard, a comprehensive analytical framework was employed, integrating molecular fingerprinting via gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) with a multi-trophic battery of bioassays, including Aliivibrio fischeri, Heterocypris incongruens, and Sinapis alba L. The chemical characterization revealed highly heterogeneous profiles dominated by esters (up to 41%), alcohols

Local effects of printed logos and reflective striping fixed to firefighter clothing material packages under low radiation exposure.

Notifications that related 1st degree burns to reflective striping and impermeable clothing elements did reach the investigators, while the mechanisms behind this phenomenon are still unclear. Material tests for thermal and evaporative resistance, and for heat transmission under dry and wet conditions at low radiation levels were done to evaluate the performance of protective clothing with and without printed logos or reflective striping. The results under the specified conditions showed reduction of heat loss capacity under impermeable elements from dry to wet conditions. Reflective surfaces,

Does Suspected Sleep Disordered Breathing Impact on the Sleep and Performance of Firefighting Volunteers during a Simulated Fire Ground Campaign?

Adequate sleep is fundamental to workplace performance. For volunteer firefighters who work in safety critical roles, poor performance at work can be life threatening. Extended shifts and sleeping conditions negatively impact sleep during multi-day fire suppression campaigns. Having sleep disordered breathing (SDB) could contribute further to sleep deficits. Our aim was to investigate whether those with suspected SDB slept and performed more poorly during a fire ground simulation involving sleep restriction. Participants, n = 20 participated in a 3-day-4-night fire ground simulation. Based on …

Effects of forearm vs. leg submersion in work tolerance time in a hot environment while wearing firefighter protective clothing.

This study compared physiological responses and total work tolerance time following forearm submersion (FS) or leg submersion (LS) in cool water, after performing work in a hot environment while wearing fire fighting protective clothing (FPC). Participants walked at 3.5 mph on a treadmill in a hot environment (WBGT 32.8 ± 0.9°C) until a rectal temperature (T(rec)) of 38.5°C was reached. Participants were then subjected to one of two peripheral cooling interventions, in a counterbalanced order. Forearms or lower legs were submerged in water (16.9 ± 0.8°C) for a total of 20 min, followed by a wo

On-site manual therapy for firefighters in Seoul: six-month utilization and outcome from a retrospective service analysis and web-based survey.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, firefighters in Seoul responded to over two million emergency calls, exposing them to substantial physical and psychological strain. This working environment increases the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and occupational stress. To address these issues, the Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters (SMFDH) piloted a manual therapy program provided at fire stations. To our knowledge, this manuscript is the first report describing the feasibility of such an intervention in fire stations. METHODS: From 11 June to 6 December 2024, one Korean Medicine (KM) doctor…

Causal Model Analysis of the Effect of Formalism, Fear of Infection, COVID-19 Stress on Firefighters' Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome and Insomnia.

As the front line of epidemic prevention, firefighters are responsible for the transportation of infected cases. Firefighters are under a lot of stress from the new COVID-19, especially the fear that they may contract the virus at work and spread the virus to their families. In particular, the framework of this study incorporates Riggs' formalism variables. When firefighters think that the epidemic prevention regulations are inconsistent with the actual epidemic prevention, it will increase their work pressure on COVID-19. In this study, firefighters from all over Taiwan were used as the respo…
