Validating accelerometry estimates of energy expenditure across behaviours using heart rate data in a free-living seabird.

Two main techniques have dominated the field of ecological energetics: the heart rate and doubly labelled water methods. Although well established, they are not without their weaknesses, namely expense, intrusiveness and lack of temporal resolution. A new technique has been developed using accelerometers; it uses the overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA) of an animal as a calibrated proxy for energy expenditure. This method provides high-resolution data without the need for surgery. Significant relationships exist between the rate of oxygen consumption (V̇O2 ) and ODBA in controlled conditi

Differential tissue and flight developmental expression of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase isozymes in the Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans.

Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) isozymes are differentially expressed among tissues and during flight development. GPDH-1 is involved in the flight-muscle metabolism and GPDH-2 provides precursors for lipid biosynthesis in many tissues. We have isolated and characterized from Triatoma infestans, a Chagas disease vector, two cDNAs encoding for GPDH-1 and GPDH-2 isozymes. The inferred amino acid sequences showed high identity with other GPDH sequences from flying insects. A GPDH-2 transcript was found in fifth instar nymphs, thoracic muscles, adult gonads, and fat bodies. Both isozymes

Effects of Hypericum perforatum and paroxetine in the mouse defense test battery.

Since (a) Hypericum perforatum shows anxiolytic-like effect in some animal models, (b) antidepressant drugs (AD) have been used as the main drug treatment for panic disorder (PD), (c) AD are also effective in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and (d) H. perforatum exhibits antidepressant activity, it was hypothesized that H. perforatum might possess an antipanic-like and/or anxiolytic-like effect. Previous studies with the mouse defense test battery (MDTB) have suggested that this model may be useful for the investigation of anxiolytic-like and antipanic-like compounds. Thus, the aim of the

Diel movements and flight altitudes of the European storm-petrel in the North Atlantic and their implications for conservation.

Understanding the movement patterns and foraging areas of seabirds is critical for their conservation and for mitigating potential impacts from human activities, such as offshore wind farm (OWF) development. We provide the first GPS data on foraging trips and travel altitudes of European storm-petrels (ESP) Hydrobates pelagicus in the Bay of Biscay, near planned OWF development areas. We obtained 28 complete trips from 19 individuals during the incubation periods of the 2023 and 2024 breeding seasons at three colonies along the Spanish Cantabrian shore. Distribution models for ESP were develop

The challenge of measuring mosquito flight performance: going beyond sterile insect technique and into transgenic and gene drive-based approaches.

Invasive insects inflict global costs of more than 70 billion USD annually by destroying crops and spreading disease-causing pathogens. Sterile insect technique (SIT), an insect population control method, involves the irradiation or chemical sterilization of insects to produce sterile males that are mass-released. SIT has proven effective in reducing populations of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Mexican fruit fly and screwworm fly. In the past decade, efforts to improve SIT with transgenic approaches have increased, including the development of potentially highly invasive gene drive transgenes.

Chicago Archaeopteryx informs on the early evolution of the avian bauplan.

Here we report on the nearly complete and uncrushed 14th specimen of Archaeopteryx. Exceptional preservation and preparation guided by micro-computed tomographic data make this one of the best exemplars of this iconic taxon, preserving important data regarding skeletal transformation and plumage evolution in relation to the acquisition of flight during early avian evolution. The ventrolaterally exposed skull reveals a palatal morphology intermediate between troodontids1 and crownward Cretaceous birds2,3. Modifications of the skull reflect the shift towards a less rigid cranial architecture in

Genomic Characterization of the Novel Bartonella refiksaydamii sp. Isolated from the Blood of a Crocidura suaveolens (Pallas, 1811).

Bartonella species are reemerging infectious agents that are transmitted by arthropod vectors among animals and/or humans. At least 13 of the 35 currently recognized Bartonella species are pathogenic for humans. Most of the pathogenic species, except Bartonella quintana and Bartonella bacilliformis, are zoonotic agents with animal reservoirs, including cats, dogs, coyotes, foxes, cattle, and rodents. In this study, a novel Bartonella species was isolated from the blood of a Crocidura suaveolens (Pallas, 1811) Lesser shrew that was captured in the Bartın region of Northwestern Turkey. The strai

Aero-medical evacuation with interventional lung assist in lung failure patients.

OBJECTIVE: Acute respiratory failure can make long distance transport by air extremely difficult. Despite pressurised cabins, the pressure will fall to about three quarters of one atmosphere, and the oxygen partial pressure will fall proportionally. Interventional lung assist (iLA) is a well documented treatment in the critical care unit, but has not been evaluated scientifically in long range aero-medical evacuation. The present animal study was performed to test the feasibility of treating lung failure with iLA during intercontinental air evacuation in a military setting. METHODS: Eight adu

Morphometry of fish inner ear otoliths after development at 3g hypergravity.

Size and asymmetry (size difference between the left and right sides) of inner ear otoliths of larval cichlid fish were determined after a long-term stay in moderate hypergravity conditions (3g; centrifuge), in the course of which the animals completed their ontogenetic development from hatch to freely swimming. Neither the normal morphogenetic development nor the timely onset and gain of performance of swimming behaviour were impaired by the experimental conditions. However, both utricular and saccular otoliths (lapilli and sagittae, respectively) were significantly smaller after hyper-g expo

Study of the Expression of Integrins in Smooth Myocytes of the Gastrointestinal Organs After Space Flight.

Spaceflight has crucial effects on living organisms, primarily due to weightlessness, which causes essential morphofunctional changes in the tissues of almost all body systems. Smooth muscle tissue is one of the main system-forming components of the gastrointestinal tract, which makes its study particularly relevant to space gastroenterology. Integrins are cell adhesion receptors expressed in practically all cell types, including smooth muscle cells. By mediating interactions with the extracellular matrix and intercellular signaling, smooth muscle cell integrins actively participate in adaptat

Reproductive biomedicine in space: implications for gametogenesis, fertility and ethical considerations in the era of commercial spaceflight.

As the era of commercial and frequent spaceflight advances, the question of human fertility in space is no longer theoretical but urgently practical. Despite over 65 years of human spaceflight activities, little is known of the impact of the space environment on the human reproductive systems during long-duration missions. Extended time in space poses potential hazards to the reproductive function of female and male astronauts, including exposure to cosmic radiation, altered gravity, psychological and physical stress, and disruption to circadian rhythm. This review encapsulates current underst

Changes of iron dynamics in the duodenum and bone marrow under partial gravity condition in mice.

BACKGROUND: With the advancement of the space age, research on physiological changes during long-term space missions has become increasingly important. Spaceflight-induced anemia, along with muscle and bone loss, is a significant concern for astronaut health, potentially disrupting iron metabolism and absorption. However, the mechanisms underlying intestinal iron absorption in space remain unclear. AIM: This study investigated iron dynamics in the duodenum and bone marrow of mice exposed to partial gravity (PG) to assess potential alterations in iron absorption and storage. METHODS: Using sa

Spaceflight results in depressed cancellous bone formation in rat humeri.

Two experiments investigating the effects of short-term spaceflight on cancellous bone turnover were carried out: Physiological Systems Experiment-1 (PSE-1) (a 4-d orbital spaceflight) and PSE-2 (a 10-d flight). Cancellous bone area was not significantly altered by spaceflight in the humerus during either flight. The calculated bone formation rate was unchanged during the 4-d flight but decreased during the 10-d flight. The decrease in calculated bone formation during the longer flight was due to a combination of a statistically significant decrease in mineral apposition rate and a nonsignific

Histochemical alterations in the digestive tract of rats after 13 days of flight in the "Cosmos 1887" biosatellite.

In rats recovered after 13 days of cosmic flight a diminution of acid and neutral glycoproteins was observed in the gastric mucosa and proximal segments of the small intestine: the decrease was less evident in the sublingual glands and colon. Leucine aminopeptidase and acid phosphatase in the small intestine were intensified. No significant changes were observed in the other enzymes investigated. Acid phosphatase showed a more intense activity in the endocrine pancreas B cells. The alterations observed after 13 days of flight in the "Cosmos 1887" biosatellite are significant but less marked th

Space motion sickness: etiological hypotheses and a proposal for diagnostic clinical examination.

The general notion that space motion sickness (SMS) is due to a "conflict" between vestibular, visual, and other sensory inputs has gained popular acceptance. We have reviewed three specific hypotheses for SMS and identified characteristic disorders of ocular motility that each hypothesis would predict. Accurate recording of horizontal and vertical eye movements during free head movements in space craft presents technical difficulties. We suggest that careful clinical examination may be useful, provided the examination is directed towards detecting those specific abnormalities predicted by eac

Blood meal drives de novo lipogenesis in the fat body of Rhodnius prolixus.

In insects, lipids are stored in the fat body mainly as triacylglycerol. Lipids can be directly provided by digestion and incorporated from the hemolymph, or synthesized de novo from other substrates such as carbohydrates and amino acids. The first step in de novo lipid synthesis is catalyzed by acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), which carboxylates acetyl-CoA to form malonyl-CoA. Rhodnius prolixus is a hematophagous insect vector of Chagas disease and feeds exclusively on large and infrequent blood meals. Adult females slowly digest the blood and concomitantly accumulate lipids in the fat body. In

Coordinated transformations of the labyrinth and occiput during the dinosaur-bird transition.

Evolutionary shape changes of the vertebrate semicircular canals (SCCs) are often ascribed to evolutionary transitions in locomotion, including the origin of flight during the dinosaur-bird transition. However, the potential for transformations of braincase architecture to influence SCC shape independent of sensory-functional adaptation has generally been overlooked. We evaluate the influence of both factors using a large dataset of 146 living and recently extinct crown birds, including taxa representing ~24 independent evolutionary losses of flight, together with Mesozoic stem avialans, nonav

Fly motion vision maximizes signal energy transfer between mechanical input and sensor output.

Insects achieve agile flight using a sensor-rich control architecture whose embodiment eliminates the need for complex computation. For example, their visual systems are tuned to detect the optic flow associated with specific self-motions, but what functional principle does this tuning embed, and how does it facilitate motor control? Here, we tested the hypothesis that evolution cotunes physics and physiology by aligning an insect's sensors to its dynamically important modes of self-motion. Specifically, we show that the spatial tuning of the blowfly motion vision system maximizes the open-loo
