PET with fluorodeoxyglucose and sodium fluoride (NaF) radiotracers has shown a great promise in assessing patients with multiple myeloma (MM). However, the standardization of PET/computed tomography scans interpretation in patients with myeloma in clinical practice is still debatable. This article reviews available data regarding the use of fluorodeoxyglucose and NaF PET in patients with MM. Introduced is a novel method of PET quantification as applied to patients with MM. A new concept for PET-based evaluation of patients with MM is also discussed: dual time point imaging. Finally, the role o

We report an interesting image of a 49-year-old woman revealed with Tietze's syndrome (TS) by ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT. She presented with right upper sternum pain with a hard and fixed palpable mass. Chest radiograph and CT-Scanner revealed no abnormalities. PET/CT-FDG showed a hypermetabolic activity around right sternoclavicular joint, which was the correct symptomatic lesion. Hence, FDG PET/CT may be useful for diagnosing TS and to accurately detect the symptomatic lesion.

In this review, we discuss molecular brain imaging studies using positron emission tomography (PET) with 2-deoxy-2(18F)fluoro-d-glucose (FDG) in human newborns and infants, and illustrate how this technology can be applied to probe the neuropathophysiology of neonatal neurologic disorders. PET studies have been difficult to perform in sick babies because of patient transportation issues and suboptimal spatial resolution. With approval from the FDA and the institutional review board, we modified and installed the Focus 220 animal microPET scanner (Concorde Microsystems, Knoxville, TN) directly

In patients with neurofibromatosis type 1, transformation of neurofibromas into a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a severe complication of the disease. Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/computed tomography (PET/CT) is a viable option for detecting malignant tumors in neurofibromatosis type 1 patients. The aim of this review was to assess the diagnostic performance of the most frequently used parameters of PET/CT in detecting MPNST. An extensive computer search was performed using the Cochrane Library, Pubmed, and Medline/Embase databases. Two reviewers independently extract

An F-FDG PET/CT was performed on a 43-year-old woman with photosensitive skin rash, abnormal liver function, and pancytopenia, which demonstrated prominent hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and diffuse liver F-FDG avidity. The liver biopsy revealed intrahepatic cholestasis with biliary fibrosis resulting from the deposition of protoporphyrin. X-linked erythroid-specific 5-aminolevulinate synthase gene analysis proved the diagnosis of X-linked protoporphyria.

Lipoid pneumonia is uncommon disease caused by presence of macroscopic fat in the lung parenchyma commonly originating from exogenous source secondary to aspiration or inhalation of animal fats or mineral or vegetable oils. Alternatively, it can be due to endogenous fat accumulated in the alveoli in the setting of chronic bronchial obstruction or inflammation. The imaging findings include ground-glass opacities, consolidation, nodules, and masses. Presence of macroscopic fat on CT is helpful; however it might not always be present. Increased FDG uptake can be present secondary to ongoing infla

A 63-year-old woman had persistent bloody pericardial effusion. Tuberculous pericarditis was initially suspected, but empirical antituberculosis therapy was futile. FDG PET/CT study revealed abnormal FDG activity in multiple parts of the pericardium, especially along with aorta and main pulmonary artery, and in the left atrium. However, there was no abnormal activity in other parts of the body. Histopathologic examination revealed primary pericardial angiosarcoma.

PET using 18F-FDG for treatment monitoring in patients with lymphoma is one of the most well-developed clinical applications. PET/CT is nowadays used during treatment to assess chemosensitivity, with response-adapted therapy given according to 'interim' PET in clinical practice to adults and children with Hodgkin lymphoma. PET is also used to assess remission from disease and to predict prognosis in the pretransplant setting. Mature data have been reported for the common subtypes of aggressive B-cell lymphomas, with more recent data also supporting the use of PET for response assessment in T-c

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present meta-analysis was to systematically evaluate the overall diagnostic accuracy of F-FDG PET/CT for the detection of adrenal metastasis in lung cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of Medline (PubMed), Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases published through 10 January 2017 on the role of F-FDG PET/CT in evaluating adrenal mass in lung cancer patients was performed. Pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio of F-FDG

Chorea-acanthocytosis is 1 type of neuroacanthocytosis that is a group of rare, hereditary neurodegenerative disorders. We presented a brain FDG PET finding of a 31-year-old woman with chorea-acanthocytosis. The images demonstrated significant hypometabolism in bilateral caudate nuclei and putamina. The finding of FDG PET is more prominent than that of MRI. Another interesting observation is the mildly increased FDG uptake in pituitary gland, although its relationship with the disease is unclear.

A 56-year-old woman who received surgery for left breast cancer 10 years previously underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography (FDG-PET) for postoperative follow-up. FDG-PET revealed high uptake of tracer in the esophagogastric junction. A slightly elevated, lobular lesion was found in the lower third of the esophagus on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. An endoscopic biopsy revealed squamous cell carcinoma. We performed thoracoscopic subtotal esophagectomy. Histopathological examination showed a polypoid spindle cell tumor arising from superficial squamous cell carcinoma. I

A 51-year-old male bricklayer without cerebral symptoms underwent whole-body FDG PET for suspicion of mediastinal sarcoidosis. PET/CT incidentally demonstrated a voluminous right frontal arachnoid cyst with normal glucose metabolism in the adjacent cortex. MRI demonstrated compression of the ipsilateral cerebral parenchyma and precentral, angulate, callosal, and superior frontal sulci. Functional bilateral finger-thumb paradigm MRI revealed right hemispheric reorganization of cortical motor activation with prominent activation between the inferior frontal gyrus and the postcentral gyrus.
