Systemic administration of mice with folic acid (FA) has been used for studying the pathogenesis of acute renal failure. We present a case of a child with iron-deficiency anemia, folic acid deficiency, and scurvy. His anemia proved refractory to treatment with iron until he received both folic acid and vitamin C supplementation. This case illustrates the importance of the evaluation of ascorbic acid and folate status in treating iron-deficiency anemia initially refractory to iron supplementation, because multiple nutrient deficiencies may coexist.

Because of anaemia and dystrophy a girl was admitted to hospital. By bone marrow aspiration the diagnosis of a megalocytic anaemia was established. The determination of folic acid revealed a severe folate deficiency caused by education problems with consecutive malnutrition. Under folic acid replacement therapy and intensive talks with the parents the girl recovered from her illness and after change of nutrition she developed well without any further folic acid replacement.

A study of the effect of growth of Trichinella spiralis in rats fed a folic-acid-deficient diet is described. Trichinella spiralis larvae encysted in the diaphragms of two groups-rats fed a folic acid-deficient diet and rats fed a complete (normal) diet-were examined. In rats fed a folic-acid-deficient diet, the number of the encysted larvae was larger than that in the controls. However, the encysted larvae were substantially longer in the control group of rats fed complete (normal) diets.
