Presence and diversity of Salmonella isolated from layer farms in central Ecuador.

Background: Given the considerable role played by Salmonella in the incidence of food contamination, around the world, surveillance of this infection is prioritized by both food producers and health care authorities. Data remains insufficient concerning the prevalence of Salmonella in poultry systems in Ecuador and in Latin America in general. Methods: In this study, we evaluated the presence and diversity of Salmonella serovars in samples taken from 21 layer farms and backyard layers in central Ecuador during August-November 2017.   Salmonella was isolated following standardized methods (ISO

Expanding black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens; Diptera: Stratiomyidae) in the developing world: Use of BSF larvae as a biological tool to recycle various organic biowastes for alternative protein production in Nepal.

The growing global demand for food, particularly animal protein, is intensifying challenges related to food security and environmental sustainability. The increase in organic waste generation, coupled with inefficient waste management, is further deteriorating living conditions by negatively impacting the environment and public health, especially in developing nations. This study investigated the potential of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) to recycle major daily organic waste fractions in Nepal. BSFL were exposed to seven different biowaste-based substrates locally sourced from fruit and vege

From Tobacco to Ultraprocessed Food: How Industry Engineering Fuels the Epidemic of Preventable Disease.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) are engineered to heighten reward and accelerate delivery of reinforcing ingredients, driving compulsive consumption and disrupting appetite regulation. This is a growing challenge for health policy. UPFs share key engineering strategies adopted from the tobacco industry, such as dose optimization and hedonic manipulation. These parallels should inform how we classify and regulate UPFs. Policy tools that helped reduce tobacco-related harm, including restrictions on child-targeted marketing, taxes, improved labeling, limits on availability i

[European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products: five years experience].

The "European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products" (EMEA) is since 1995 primarily responsible for the scientific evaluation of applications for a European marketing authorisation for medicinal products derived from biotechnology and other high technology (centralised procedure). For other products, the EMEA arbitrates where mutual recognition of national marketing authorisations between the Member States is not possible (decentralised procedure). European patients are now able to have speedier access to new drugs, usually within one year. The new system also helps to reinforce the

Reducing Anemia Prevalence in Afghanistan: Socioeconomic Correlates and the Particular Role of Agricultural Assets.

This research aims to examine the socio-economic correlates of anemia in women, and potential sources of iron in household diets in Afghanistan. It also examines whether ownership of agricultural (particularly livestock) assets and their use in food production has a role in alleviating anaemia, especially where local markets may be inadequate. We analyse data from the 2010/11 Afghanistan Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, estimating a logistic regression to examine how anemia status of women is associated with socio-economic covariates. A key result found is that sheep ownership has a protecti

Piecing Together Piecemeal Regulation: Stakeholder Insights Into Joint Statutory Regulation to Reduce Children's Unhealthy Commodity Marketing Exposure in Aotearoa New Zealand.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Globally, there is growing momentum for statutory marketing regulation over unhealthy commodities (UHC), including alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy food and gambling. These attempts respond to ubiquitous UHC marketing and immense UHC-related harm. Governments' ability to protect people is often undermined by piecemeal regulation for UHCs, despite substantial similarities between the commodities. This article explores Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) stakeholder perspectives on joint regulation of the marketing of UHCs. METHODS: We interviewed 15 stakeholders from across the UHC policy pr

The Influence of the US FDA Authorized Modified Exposure Claim on Heuristic Processing of Tobacco Risk Information and Marketing Message Among Young Adults.

The US FDA has authorized several modified risk tobacco products (MRTPs), permitting marketing claims around modified exposure (i.e. lower exposure to harmful substances compared to cigarettes). We propose that this FDA authorization may serve as a heuristic cue, influencing how people visually attend to the U.S. Surgeon General's warning to discourage tobacco use and perceive MRTPs and their marketing messages among young tobacco users and non-users. We conducted a 3 (claims: FDA-authorized modified exposure claim vs. the claim only vs. no claim) ×2 (tobacco use status: users vs. non-users) b

SARS-CoV-2 Seroprevalence Survey in Grocery Store Workers-Minnesota, 2020-2021.

Grocery workers were essential to the workforce and exempt from lockdown requirements as per Minnesota Executive Order 20-20. The risk of COVID-19 transmission in grocery settings is not well documented. This study aimed to determine which factors influenced seropositivity among grocery workers. We conducted a cross-sectional study of Minnesota grocery workers aged 18 and older using a convenience sample. Participants were recruited using a flyer disseminated electronically via e-mail, social media, and newspaper advertising. Participants were directed to an electronic survey and were asked to

Quantitative microbial exposure assessment of uropathogenic Escherichia coli in ready-to-eat chicken: Consumer risk and mitigation strategies in Taiwan.

Poultry is a significant reservoir of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), an emerging foodborne pathogen linked to urinary tract infections. Ready-to-eat (RTE) meats, often consumed without reheating, are vulnerable to contamination during the retail stage. This is the first study in Taiwan to quantitatively assess consumer exposure to UPEC from RTE chicken while identifying feasible risk mitigation strategies. We developed a retail-to-fork quantitative microbial exposure assessment (QMEA) to evaluate UPEC risks in RTE chicken and propose evidence-based food safety interventions. In total,

Unapproved prescription cough, cold, and allergy drug products: recent US Food and Drug Administration regulatory action on unapproved cough, cold, and allergy medications.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) drug approval and over-the-counter drug monograph processes play an essential role in ensuring that all drugs are both safe and effective for their intended uses. Manufacturers of drugs that lack required approval have not provided the FDA with evidence demonstrating that their products are safe and effective. Some of these prescription drugs have been marketed for many years and have remained on the market despite changes to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which requires approval for safety and efficacy purposes. Many health-care providers m

Food-basket intervention to reduce micronutrient deficiencies among Maasai-pregnant women in Tanzania: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrients comprised of vitamin and mineral nutrients that are needed during pregnancy for foetal growth, development and maturation, as well as for reducing/preventing maternal complications. However, micronutrient-rich foods (vegetables and fruits) are lacking in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as a result of restrictions on cultivation in conservation areas and the unavailability of vegetables and fruits in local markets. The present study introduced a food basket intervention and assessed the effectiveness of the food baskets with respect to addressing anaemia, vitamin A a

Antioxidant system for the preservation of vitamin A in Ultra Rice.

BACKGROUND: Ultra Rice grains are micronutrient-fortified, extruded rice grains designed to address specific nutritional deficiencies in populations where rice is a staple food. Vitamin A and some of the B vitamins, as well as iron and zinc, are target nutrients for fortification through Ultra Rice technology. Vitamin A is sensitive to degradation. Therefore, the original Ultra Rice formulations included stabilizers, some of which were not approved as food additives in all of the receiving markets. OBJECTIVE: To develop a new antioxidant system for improving vitamin A storage stability in Ult

Sustainable packaging materials for fermented probiotic dairy or non-dairy food and beverage products: challenges and innovations.

The food and beverage packaging industry has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. Particularly the requirement for appropriate packaging materials used for the sale of fermented products is boosted due to the rising acceptance of economical functional foods available to consumers on the shelves of their local supermarkets. The most popular nutraceutical foods with increased sales include natural yogurts, probiotic-rich milk, kefir, and other fermented food and beverage products. These items have mainly been produced from dairy-based or non-dairy raw materials to provide several produ

Leveraging Technology to Engage Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Consumers With Children at Farmers Markets: Qualitative Community-Engaged Approach to App Development.

BACKGROUND: Fruit and vegetable consumption is lower than national trends among people receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to economic and physical access barriers. Monetary nutrition incentive programs at farmers markets aim to reduce these barriers to improve diet quality among SNAP consumers. We leveraged community-engaged methods to collaboratively design a mobile app to increase the use of both nutrition incentive programs and farmers markets among SNAP households with children. This population represents about 35% of all SNAP households providing the d

A review of gluten detoxification in wheat for food applications: approaches, mechanisms, and implications.

With the improved knowledge of gluten-related disorders, especially celiac disease (CD), the market of gluten-free food is growing. However, the current gluten-free diet still presents challenges in terms of nutrition, acceptability, and cost due to the absence of gluten. It is important to note that gluten-related allergies or sensitivities have different underlying causes. And individuals with mild non-celiac gluten disorder symptoms may not necessarily require the same gluten-free treatments. Scientists are actively seeking alternative solutions for these consumers. This review delves into

Exploitation of genomics in fungicide research: current status and future perspectives.

Every year, fungicide use to control plant disease caused by pathogenic fungi increases. The global fungicide market is now worth more than £5.3 billion, second only to the herbicide market in importance. In the UK, over 5500 tonnes of fungicide were applied to crops in 2010 (The Food and Environment Research Agency, Pesticide Usage Statistics), with 95.5% of the wheat-growing area receiving three fungicide sprays. Although dependence on fungicides to produce food securely, reliably and cheaply may be moderated in the future by further developments in crop biotechnology, modern crop protection

Institutional and relational determinants in high- and medium-extent food product crises: the inner perspective of a public health crisis.

In 2008, Canada enacted its biggest-ever food recall in response to a Listeria crisis, stemming from a Maple Leaf Foods plant, that killed 22 Canadians. Afterwards, Maple Leaf's market share quickly returned to pre-crisis levels, but the long-term repercussions of the scare still reverberate in Maple Leaf's brand. In this case study, which offers an organizational perspective on the food recall, data was collected, through in-depth interviews of persons involved in the crisis response, and analyzed. The aim of this paper is to make transparent the ways in which Maple Leaf Foods organized their

Safety Aspects of Cell Culture-Derived Food for Human Consumption.

The emergence of cell culture-derived foods such as cultured meat and seafood could represent a transformative shift in the food production system. However, the novel nature of these products raises safety considerations that must be addressed prior to market entry. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the safety assessment framework for cell culture-derived foods intended for human consumption. It summarises the critical components of the risk assessment to be applied, including cell line selection, gene editing and genetic modification of cell lines, culture media composition, n
