Vector short-latency somatosensory-evoked potentials after median nerve stimulation.

A new method has been developed for recording short-latency somatosensory-evoked potentials after median nerve stimulation. Negative electrical forces recorded with three orthodiagonal bipolar electrodes in the neck had a direction opposite to that of impulse conduction in the proximal peripheral and cervical somatosensory pathway. Sequential tracings of vectors opposite the electrical forces were made in three-dimensional display, thus reproducing the actual time sequence of electrical events in those structures. Fixed generators such as the subcortical nuclei were also analyzed with this tec

Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation Uncovers Spinal Reflex Contributions to Finger Force Coupling Patterns.

Understanding how spinal reflex pathways interact with biomechanical constraints to govern finger force control is critical for advancing neuroprosthetic design and neurorehabilitation. This study combined transcutaneous stimulation of the ulnar/median nerves with high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) and multi-digit force measurements to investigate how spinal reflex engagement (via H-reflex activation), electrode placement, and neuroanatomical variability shape finger interdependence. We evoked H-reflexes in the extrinsic finger flexors and quantified spinal excitability using H-reflex/M-wa

Psychological distress, forced awakening, and morning blood pressure surge.

BACKGROUND: Morning blood pressure surge (MBPS) has been recognized as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease events. Psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, and perceived stress, and behavioral risk factors, such as poor sleep quality, have been associated with increased MBPS. Elevations in sympathetic activity induced by forced awakening may also contribute to further increases in MBPS. Yet, no examination of the interrelationships among psychological distress, sleep quality, awakening mode (natural vs. forced awakenings), and MBPS has been undertaken. OBJECTIVE:

Estimation of lower back muscle force in a lifting task using wearable IMUs.

Low back pain is commonly reported in occupational settings due to factors such as heavy lifting and poor ergonomic practices, often resulting in significant healthcare expenses and lowered productivity. Assessment tools for human motion and ergonomic risk at the workplace are still limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess lower back muscle and joint reaction forces in laboratory conditions using wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) during weight lifting, a frequently high-risk workplace task. Ten able-bodied participants were instructed to lift a 28 lbs. box while surface electrom

Frictional forces in stent retriever procedures: The impact of vessel diameter, angulation, and deployment position.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical thrombectomy has improved the outcome of patients with acute ischemic stroke, but complications such as subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) can worsen the prognosis. This study investigates the frictional forces exerted by stent retrievers (SRs) on vessel walls, hypothesizing that these forces contribute to vascular stress and a risk of hemorrhage. We aimed to understand how vessel diameter, curvature, and stent deployment position influence these forces. METHODS: Using a silicone vascular model simulating the middle cerebral artery, we created virtual vessels with diameters

CXCL12/CXCR4 Mediates Orthodontic Root Resorption via Regulating the M1/M2 Ratio.

Mechanical force-induced external root resorption is a major clinical side effect of orthodontic treatment. Recent work has revealed that M1 macrophages play a vital role in promoting orthodontic root resorption (ORR), but the mechanism of how mechanical force stimulation increases the M1/M2 macrophage ratio in periodontal tissue is poorly understood. In the current study, we showed that C-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12)+ periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) and C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4)+ monocytes in the periodontal ligament (PDL) were significantly increased after force applicati

The spatial distribution of thin filament activation influences force development and myosin activity in computational models of muscle contraction.

Striated muscle contraction is initiated by Ca2+ binding to, and activating, thin filament regulatory units (RU) within the sarcomere, which then allows myosin cross-bridges from the opposing thick filament to bind actin and generate force. The amount of overlap between the filaments dictates how many potential cross-bridges are capable of binding, and thus how force is generated by the sarcomere. Myopathies and atrophy can impair muscle function by limiting cross-bridge interactions between the filaments, which can occur when the length of the thin filament is reduced or when RU function is d

Can the Measurement of Jaw-Opening Forces Assist in the Diagnosis of Temporomandibular Disorders?

AIMS: To investigate the effectiveness of a novel jaw-opening-force measuring device as a screening tool to aid in the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS: Symptomatic TMD patients (n = 58) and control TMD-free participants (n = 56) were screened by an oral medicine specialist according to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD). TMD patients were divided into three subcategories based on TMD symptoms (myofascial pain, disc displacement, and both combined). Jaw-opening forces were measured in both groups with an adjustable head device connected to a 1,000-N-load cell. Sev

Muscle contributions to tibiofemoral shear forces and valgus and rotational joint moments during single leg drop landing.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries commonly occur during single-leg landing tasks and are a burdensome condition. Previous studies indicate that muscle forces play an important role in controlling ligamentous loading, yet these studies have typically used cadaveric models considering only the knee-spanning quadriceps, hamstrings, and gastrocnemius muscle groups. Any muscles (including non-knee-spanning muscles) capable of opposing the anterior shear joint reaction force and the valgus joint reaction moment are thought to have the greatest potential for protecting the ACL from injury. Modulation of muscle synergies for multiple forearm movements under variant force and arm position constraints.

OBJECTIVE: To promote clinical applications of muscle-synergy-based neurorehabilitation techniques, this study aims to clarify any potential modulations of both the muscular compositions and temporal activations of forearm muscle synergies for multiple movements under variant force levels and arm positions. APPROACH: Two groups of healthy subjects participated in this study. Electromyography (EMG) signals were collected when they performed four hand and wrist movements under variant constraints-three different force levels for one group and five arm positions for the other. Muscle synergies w

Mitral annuloplasty ring flexibility preferentially reduces posterior suture forces.

Annuloplasty ring repair is a common procedure for the correction of mitral valve regurgitation. Commercially available rings vary in dimensions and material properties. Annuloplasty ring suture dehiscence from the native annulus is a catastrophic yet poorly understood phenomenon that has been reported across ring types. Recognizing that sutures typically dehisce from the structurally weaker posterior annulus, our group is conducting a multi-part study in search of ring design parameters that influence forces acting on posterior annular sutures in the beating heart. Herein, we report the effec

Quantitative analysis of da Vinci 5 force feedback technology in robotic rectal surgery: a preliminary pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The da Vinci 5 (DV5) introduces force feedback (FFb) technology to robotic surgery, aiming to enhance safety through haptic sensation. However, its quantitative impact on specific tissue manipulations in rectal cancer surgery remains unclear. This study evaluated the clinical significance of FFb by analyzing force metrics across different instrument roles. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 13 consecutive robotic rectal cancer resections performed by a single expert surgeon. Force data were extracted from system logs for the Cadiere Forceps (static retraction) and Fenestrated Bi

Selective inhibition of platelet inflammatory tether formation via force-modulated vibrational states of integrin αIIbβ3.

CONTEXT: Platelet inflammatory tether (PITT) formation under pathological shear is a central driver of thrombo-inflammation and bleeding complications in severe infections, yet current antiplatelet therapies lack selectivity because they target equilibrium integrin affinity rather than force-dependent adhesion dynamics. The mechanistic origin of catch-bond stabilization in integrin αIIbβ3 under inflammatory shear, and its separation from physiological hemostatic adhesion, therefore remains unresolved. METHOD: Here, we develop a quantum-informed mechanochemical model that explicitly links shea

Atomic force microscopy study of the antigen-antibody binding force on patient cancer cells based on ROR1 fluorescence recognition.

Knowledge of drug-target interaction is critical to our understanding of drug action and can help design better drugs. Due to the lack of adequate single-molecule techniques, the information of individual interactions between ligand-receptors is scarce until the advent of atomic force microscopy (AFM) that can be used to directly measure the individual ligand-receptor forces under near-physiological conditions by linking ligands onto the surface of the AFM tip and then obtaining force curves on cells. Most of the current AFM single-molecule force spectroscopy experiments were performed on cell

Role of Na,K pumps in restoring contractility following loss of cell membrane integrity in rat skeletal muscle.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In skeletal muscles, electrical shocks may elicit acute loss of force, possibly related to increased plasma membrane permeability, induced by electroporation (EP). We explore the role of the Na(+),K(+) pumps in force recovery after EP. METHODS: Isolated rat soleus or extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles were exposed to EP paradigms in the range 100-800 V cm(-1), and changes in tetanic force, Na(+),K(+) contents, membrane potential, (14)C-sucrose space and the release of the intracellular enzyme lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH) were characterized. The effects of Na(+),K(+

Cutaneous information processing differs with load type during isometric finger abduction.

During submaximal isometric contraction, there are two different load types: maintenance of a constant limb angle while supporting an inertial load (position task) and maintenance of a constant force by pushing against a rigid restraint (force task). Previous studies demonstrated that performing the position task requires more proprioceptive information. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there would be a difference in cutaneous information processing between the position and force tasks by assessing the gating effect, which is reduction of amplitude of somatosensory evoked p

The effect of static muscle forces on the fracture strength of the intact distal radius in vitro in response to simulated forward fall impacts.

The distal radius fracture (DRF) is a particularly dominant injury of the wrist, commonly resulting from a forward fall on an outstretched hand. In an attempt to reduce the prevalence, costs, and potential long-term pain/deformities associated with this injury, in vivo and in vitro investigations have sought to classify the kinematics and kinetics of DRFs. In vivo forward fall work has identified a preparatory muscle contraction that occurs in the upper extremity prior to peak impact force. The present investigation constitutes the first attempt to systematically determine the effect of static

Simulated effect of reaction force redirection on the upper extremity mechanical demand imposed during manual wheelchair propulsion.

BACKGROUND: Manual wheelchair propulsion is associated with overuse injuries of the shoulder. Reaction force redirection relative to upper extremity segments was hypothesized as a means to redistribute mechanical load imposed on the upper extremity without decrements in wheelchair propulsion performance. METHODS: Two individuals performed wheelchair propulsion under simulated inclined (graded) conditions using self-selected control strategies. Upper extremity kinematics and reaction forces applied to the wheel were quantified and used as input into an experiment-based multi-link inverse dynam
