The combination of an anterior shoulder dislocation and an avulsion fracture of the greater tuberosity can usually be reduced by closed methods. This report describes a patient requiring open reduction and division of the subscapularis tendon before reduction of the glenohumeral dislocation could be achieved.

We have studied fracture-dislocation of the fifth lumbar vertebra in seven patients and reviewed 50 previously reported cases. Based on this information, we have classified the injury into five types: type 1, unilateral lumbosacral facet-dislocation with or without facet fracture; type 2, bilateral lumbosacral facet-dislocation with or without facet fracture; type 3, unilateral lumbosacral facet-dislocation and contralateral lumbosacral facet fracture; type 4, dislocation of the body of L5 with bilateral fracture of the pars interarticularis; and type 5, dislocation of the body of L5 with frac

The authors describe an uncommon injury of the upper limb, namely, dislocation of the elbow with fracture of the ipsilateral radial shaft, in a young man. After closed reduction of the joint, the radial head was found to be subluxated, and when a nonanatomic internal fixation of the radial shaft was undertaken, the radial head became dislocated. Repeat operation with removal of the implants and internal fixation with correction of rotation and angulation at the fracture site and reconstruction of the annular ligament restored normal anatomy.

A case of medical fracture dislocation of the hallucal interphalangeal joint is presented. The patient did not recall the specific mechanism that caused this injury. However, this type of injury would have to entail a substantial lateral-to-medial force at the distal phalanx. The authors' review of the literature did not reveal a similar case involving a medial dislocation of the distal phalanx. This transverse plane pathology was treated with closed reduction because of a lack of sesamoid or volar plant involvement in the joint.

A case of traumatic mandibular fracture with associated unilateral anterior dislocation of the temporomandibular joint in a child is described. Although anterior dislocation is common, this combination of fracture and separate dislocation to our knowledge has not been reported in a young child. The unusual management required in this case is discussed.

Posterior dislocation of the shoulder, a rare injury, results from direct trauma, indirect trauma, or via a seizure or electrical shock. We present a case with a posterior fracture dislocation of the shoulder secondary to a seizure in which interposition of the biceps tendon precluded closed reduction. The fractured lesser tuberosity fragment included the bicipital groove, allowing the biceps tendon to sublux posteriorly preventing closed reduction, thus requiring a subsequent open reduction.

Fracture-dislocation of the trapezio-scaphoid joint is an extremely rare injury. We report a case treated using Herbert's compression screw technique.

Four infants with fracture-dislocation of the cervical spine after traumatic delivery are described. In one patient with tetraparesis and complete dislocation of the cervical spine, transection of the cord at C6 was shown at autopsy. Two patients had fractures through the superior cartilaginous plates of the vertebral body with anterior subluxation of the spine. A fourth patient had a vertical fracture through the body of C5 with tracheal compression secondary to anterior dislocation of the spine. With conservative therapy, these three patients had good clinical recovery with healing and remod

Ten instances of fracture-dislocation of the thoracolumbar spine are described in which the lower vertebra was displaced forward under the upper one by forward slipping of the posterior articular processes. The mechanism involved is a posterior lumbosacral shearing force. All patients had neurological deficits of different degrees of severity and all but three patients recovered. Surgical treatment was indicated because of instability in four patients and was done in three of the four. Surgical reduction was always difficult. A stable and painless spine was achieved in all patients surveyed, r

Posterior shoulder fracture-dislocation is a rare and often misdiagnosed injury leading to locked chronic dislocation and complicated manage … improvement and restored range of motion. Despite the often delayed diagnosis of posterior shoulder fracture dislocation, joint-preserving surgery such as modified McLaughlin procedure can restore function and improve quality of life in young patients with chronic injuries.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the functional results of the treatment protocol for the treatment of transolecranon fracture-dislocation, by surgical reduction and osteosynthesis with plate and screws, in patients attended at a referral hospital for orthopedic trauma, with a minimum follow-up period of six months.
METHODS: Twenty-five individuals treated surgically from January 2014 to November 2018 were selected for a primary observational longitudinal study using questionnaires to assess upper limb and elbow function (DASH and MEPS), quality of life (SF-12), pain (visual analog sc

PURPOSE: Proximal humeral fracture-dislocations (PHFD) are challenging to treat. In older patients, usually arthroplasty is performed. In younger patients, osteosynthesis is chosen. This study presents functional outcomes of these different treatment modalities.
METHODS: All patients operated for PHFD from 2010 until 2017 were included. Osteosynthesis was performed in younger patients and if reconstruction was possible. Either an open deltopectoral approach or a minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) was performed. Hemiarthroplasty (HA) was done if reconstruction of the tubercles was po

Aim. To analyze the risk factors for pancreatic stent migration, dislocation, and fracture in chronic pancreatitis patients with pancreatic strictures. Materials and Methods. Endoscopic stent placements (total 386 times) were performed in 99 chronic pancreatitis patients with pancreatic duct stenosis at our institution between April 2006 and June 2014. We retrospectively examined the frequency of stent migration, dislocation, and fracture and analyzed the patient factors and stent factors. We also investigated the retrieval methods for migrated and fractured stents and their success rates. Res

Between June 2008 and June 2013, our department treated 16 severe thoracolumbar fracture dislocations (13 male and three female patients; mean age 33.6 years) with a pedicle screw system via an entirely posterior approach. We followed all patients for 18-69 months (mean 35 months). The mean operation time was 170 minutes (range: 120-280), and mean blood loss was 700 ml (range: 450-1300). The percentage displacement (mean ± standard deviation) improved from a preoperative value of 72 ± 20% to 10 ± 6% postoperatively, and the deformity angle (mean ± standard deviation) improved from 29.2 ± 15.0°…
