Distal tibial fractures are common lower-limb injuries and are generally associated with a high risk of postoperative complications, especially in patients with multiple medical comorbidities. This study sought to ascertain the efficacy of retrograde intramedullary tibial nails (RTN) for treating extra-articular distal tibial fractures in high-risk patients. Between January 2019 and December 2021, 13 patients considered at high risk for postoperative complications underwent RTN fixation. Comorbidities in the patient sample included diabetes, renal disease, hypertension, severe osteoporosis, he

BACKGROUND: Various implants are used to treat intertrochanteric fractures. However, the optimal implant to stabilize intertrochanteric femoral fractures is still a matter of debate. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the midterm outcomes of patients treated using compression hip nails (CHNs).
METHODS: Between March 2013 and April 2018, 164 patients with intertrochanteric femoral fractures who were treated with internal fixation using CHNs were enrolled in this study. The mean age of the patients was 79.6 years. We retrospectively collected and estimated information such as redu

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of intramedullary screw-based fixation on early postoperative complications after olecranon fractures. We hypothesized that intramedullary screw-based fixation results in decreased need for reoperation compared with plate and screw-based and tension band-based fixation.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort.
SETTING: Two academic Level-1 trauma centers.
PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: Five hundred fifty-six patients treated with a tension band-based, plate and screw-based, or intramedullary screw-based construct for an olecranon fracture over a 10-year period.

Lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is prone to occur after internal fixation of tibial fractures. This study analyzed the effect of intramedullary nailing (IMN) and plate fixation (PF) on lower-extremity DVT, providing reliable reference and guidance for future clinical treatment of tibial fractures. Sixty-eight patients with tibial fractures admitted to Honghui Hospital, Xi'an Jiaotong University, between February 2019 and October 2020 were selected as research participants, of which 32 cases treated with open reduction and locking-compression plate fixation were assigned to the FP gr

INTRODUCTION: Tibial fractures are common long bone injuries, often surgically fixed with intramedullary nails. Modern intramedullary tibial nails allow for two different fixation modes, namely static and dynamic modes. While studies have demonstrated benefits of using either fixation modes, there has been no consensus as to which fixation mode would produce better outcomes and less complications. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare the efficacy and safety of dynamic versus static fixation of intramedullary nails in the operative fixation of tibial diaphyseal fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures are common and disabling injuries, usually managed surgically. The most common type outside the joint capsule are trochanteric fractures, usually fixed with either sliding hip screw or intramedullary nail. Data are available in the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) on early failure and other major complications, but late or subtler complications may escape recording. This study sought to quantify such problems after fixation performed at 3different sites and identify their predictors.
METHODS: Patients with a trochanteric fracture treated at 1 of 3 sites were i

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic femur fractures (PPFF) distal to a femoral stem are traditionally treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plate and screws. To our knowledge, no studies exist comparing outcomes following ORIF vs retrograde intramedullary nails (RIMN) for this injury.
METHODS: This is a retrospective comparison of PPFFs distal to a femoral stem treated by ORIF (n = 17) vs RIMN (n = 13). The primary outcome was unplanned re-operation.
RESULTS: There was no difference in unplanned re-operation (17.6 vs 23.1%, p > 0.99), infection, nonunion, refracture, and align

UNLABELLED: The humerus is a common site of metastatic tumor involvement and pathologic fracture. Intramedullary nailing is a treatment option that offers the benefit of protecting a long segment of diseased bone, but it is not without complications. This study aims to examine the survival, functional outcomes, and complications of patients treated with cement-augmented unlocked intramedullary nailing for actual and impending pathologic fractures of the humeral shaft.
METHODS: From 2014 to 2019, 26 patients were treated with this technique. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Musculos

BACKGROUND: Surgical decision-making can be challenging when treating patients with osseous metastases. Numerous factors, including expected duration of survival, must be considered to ensure optimal operative stabilization of the affected bone. However, life expectancy of patients with metastatic carcinoma is often difficult to estimate. The goal of our study was to assess the associations of various clinical and demographic factors with survival time after intramedullary nail fixation of impending or completed pathologic femur fractures.
METHODS: One hundred thirty-eight consecutive patient

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary fixation for distal radius fractures is reported to be free of hardware irritation and less invasive than other fixation methods. Some specific complications associated with intramedullary fixation, such as radial nerve sensory neuritis, have been reported, but no study has focused on the complication rates of intramedullary fixation for distal radius fractures in the elderly population. Furthermore, no studies have analyzed common complications, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and flexor tenosynovitis including trigger finger, among patients with distal radius fractu

BACKGROUND: Previous randomized controlled studies and meta-analyses have failed to collectively favor either open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF) or intramedullary nailing (IMN) fixation. The purpose of our investigation was to elucidate the optimal decision between ORIF and IMN for acute traumatic operative humeral shaft fractures through an expected value decision analysis.
METHODS: We performed an expected value decision analysis and sensitivity analysis to elucidate the difference between ORIF and IMN fixation for patients with acute traumatic humeral shaft fractures. We surveyed 100

INTRODUCTION: Surgical fixation of displaced midshaft clavicle fractures is predominantly achieved with intramedullary (IM) or plate fixation. Both techniques have potential pitfalls: plate fixation involves greater periosteal stripping and protuberance of the implant, whereas IM fixation may be associated with implant-related complications, such as migration or skin irritation, which may lead to further surgery for implant removal. The aim of this study was to compare these two methods in simple (Robinson 2b.1) and multifragmentary (Robinson 2b.2) displaced midshaft clavicle fractures.

This study assessed the factors related to leg length discrepancy after flexible intramedullary nailing in pediatric patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted of 27 patients with flexible intramedullary nail fixation. Twenty-three patients showed lengthening of the injured limb, and 23 showed lengthening of the injured femur or tibia, with 11 patients having a resultant leg length discrepancy greater than 10 mm. Age at the time of injury was the only factor that was significantly related to leg length discrepancy. Our results show that most patients experience lengthening in the injured
