Open versus closed treatment of unilateral subcondylar and condylar neck fractures: a prospective, randomized clinical study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to compare closed treatment with open reduction and internal fixation for displaced unilateral subcondylar and condylar neck fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 32 patients with displaced unilateral condylar fractures were included in the present study. Of the 32 patients, 27 were men and 5 were women. The patients were divided into 2 groups. The group I patients were treated with closed treatment and rigid maxillomandibular fixation, and group II patients were treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The patients were assessed

Outcome of supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children treated by closed reduction and percutaneous pinning.

Supracondylar fractures of humerus in children are common injuries. Displaced fractures are inherently unstable. Conservative treatment results in malunion. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is more invasive and recovery is prolonged. From September 2004 to September 2005, 102 displaced supracondylar fractures of humerus, aged between one and half year to 13 years, were treated using close reduction and percutaneous Kirschner (K) wire fixation under c-arm fluoroscopy. Seventy nine patients were treated by cross K-wires and in twenty three cases lateral two K-wires were put. Above elb

Isolated posterior cruciate ligament injuries associated with closed tibial shaft fractures: a report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: Knee ligament injuries associated with tibia shaft fractures are usually neglected and treatment is delayed. To our knowledge, no case presentation discusses the clinical result of closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant ipsilateral isolated PCL injury. In this literature, we report the clinical result of two cases that sustained closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant PCL injury and discuss the treatment options. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the clinical result of two cases that sustained closed tibial shaft fracture with concomitant posterior cruciate ligament

Closed reduction and percutaneous pinning for type III displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children.

From 1985 to 1991, 623 cases of supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children were admitted to one center, of which 403 were analyzed in detail. Of these, 180 cases were classified as Gartland type III extension fractures, and 111 were treated via primary closed reduction and percutaneous smooth Kirschner wire pinning, of which 82 were followed up for an average of 3.5 years and were studied in detail clinically and radiologically. There were two cases of superficial pin tract infection and one of ulnar nerve palsy associated with the pinning. Nineteen fractures (10.5%) had an initial nerv

[Treatment of calcaneus and mid-foot fractures using closed reposition and fixation with the Ilisarov fixator].

Sixteen fractures of the calcaneus involving the subtalar joint were treated by closed reduction and external fixation using the Ilisarov apparatus. Except for four cases in which temporary arthrodesis of the subtalar or ankle joint was used, fixation was usually only used for the calcaneus. The operative technique is described precisely. Initial follow-up examinations (on average after 1 year) show advantages over conservative treatment, e.g. better anatomical reduction. In addition, early mobilization of the joint and early weight-bearing result in less pain from disuse osteoporosis. Further

The impact-absorbing effects of facial fractures in closed-head injuries. An analysis of 210 patients.

A series of 210 patients with facial fractures sufficiently severe to require cranial computerized tomography (CT) to evaluate suspected closed-head injury (CHI) was studied. The injuries were separated into five grades of severity based on neurological examination, including cranial CT. The injuries were also grouped into three categories based on facial regional involvement, using chi-square contingency table analysis. The data demonstrated that patients with upper facial fractures were at greatest risk for serious CHI. Injuries to both the mandibular and the midfacial regions with no upper

Evaluation of effectiveness and safety of polaprezinc as an adjuvant therapy in enhancing fracture healing in adults with closed fractures: a prospective study.

Fracture healing is a complex biological process that can be delayed by systemic or local factors. Polaprezinc, a zinc-L-carnosine complex with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties, has shown promise in tissue repair, but its role in bone regeneration remains underexplored. To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of polaprezinc as an adjuvant therapy in enhancing fracture healing among adults with closed fractures. A prospective, single-center, controlled, non-randomized interventional study was conducted over a 3 months period at a tertiary care hospital in Hyderabad.

Risk Factors for Failure of Closed Forearm Fracture Reduction in the Pediatric Emergency Department.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore risk factors for failure of forearm fracture closed reduction in the pediatric emergency department (ED) and to suggest indications for initial surgery. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all patients aged 0 to 18 years who presented to our pediatric ED with an extraarticular forearm fracture treated with closed reduction between May 2017 and April 2021. We explored risk factors for procedural failure, defined as a need for surgical intervention within 6 weeks of the closed reduction attempt. RESULTS: Of 375 patients (median age 8.1 year

Condylar remodeling after osteosynthesis of fractures of the condylar head or close to the temporomandibular joint.

PURPOSE: Condylar head fractures (CHFs) are increasingly treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). However, there are no reports on the three-dimensional postoperative volumetric transformation of the condyle, especially with regard to fragmented cases. Protruding hardware can lead to severe complications, so the goal of this study was to examine the amount of condylar bony resorption occurring after ORIF. METHODS: Included were surgically treated CHFs with eligible cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) datasets immediately after ORIF (T1) and after implant removal (T2), plus fra

A curious case of spontaneously resolving closed "jigsaw" depressed skull fracture in an adolescent.

Spontaneously resolving depressed skull fractures have been previously reported in the pediatric age group, however they are very rare in adolescents. We report a case of spontaneously elevating depressed fracture in a 13 year old boy. Depressed skull fractures in this age group might resolve on its own but may also complicate during its course of non-operative self elevation. In the reported case, the child developed gliosis and suffered seizures two years after the trauma. Repeat scans showed almost normal skull topography with underlying gliotic changes. Although all depressed skull fractur

Technique for gentle accurate reproducible closed reduction of intracapsular fracture of neck of femur.

Non-anatomic reduction with either inferior offset or varus angulation was the strongest predictor of re-displacement of the fracture and poor outcome after fixation of intracapsular fracture of neck of femur. There are many techniques for closed reduction and can be broadly divided into non-invasive and invasive techniques. We describe a minimally invasive technique, which we believe is easy, reproducible and successful in achieving good anatomical reduction.

Medial cortical fractures in computer-assisted closing-wedge high tibial osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the incidence of medial cortical fracture and influence on the loss of the correction angle in computer-assisted closing-wedge high tibial osteotomy. METHODS: Using a navigation system, 200 closing-wedge high tibial osteotomies were performed. The correction angle was defined as the difference between the pre- and postoperative medial proximal tibial angles. The change in the medial proximal tibial angle was calculated as the difference between the medial proximal tibial angles two weeks and one year postoperatively. The medial cortical fractures of the osteotomy site

Concurrent flexor carpi radialis tendon rupture and closed distal radius fracture.

Tendon rupture as a complication of distal radius fractures has been documented; however, flexor tendon rupture associated with closed distal radius fractures is rare. We report a case of a 43-year-old man who suffered a closed distal radius fracture. Intraoperatively, it was discovered that the flexor carpi radialis tendon had ruptured. From the frayed ends of the tendon and review of the radiographs, it was determined that the sharp ends of the fractured radius had lacerated the tendon at the time of injury. After fixation of the fracture with locking plate, the severed tendon was repaired a
