OBJECTIVES: To assess the utility of 3-dimensional printing for both trainee education in frontal sinus anatomy and preoperative surgical planning in complex sinonasal pathology.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental pre/postsurvey study was performed at a tertiary care center pediatric rhinology clinic. Four otolaryngology residents and 1 pediatric attending at an academic otolaryngology program were included. Eleven 3D printed models of the pediatric sinuses were created from CT maxillofacial scans. Six models were used to define the frontal outflow pathway. Five additional 3D models were created f

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the differences of membrane thickness and pressure on the paranasal sinus membrane in goats and analyze their causes. The results can provide theoretical basis and guidance for the issues of the maxillary sinus floor augmentation related to the membrane.
METHODS: The membrane was cut into two sizes from every sinus membrane. The membrane was fixed in formalin to obtain tissue specimens for the membrane thickness study and pressure study. The correlation between the two parameters was then analyzed, and appropriate statistical methods and software were se

Over the past 100 years, developments in imaging studies, endoscopic evaluation, medical treatment, and surgical techniques, particularly those employing endoscopic approaches, have led to improvements in our ability to treat frontal sinusitis. Providing "around the corner" views of the frontal recess, 30 degrees and 45 degrees endoscopes have allowed the meticulous preservation of the mucoperiosteum and restoration of normal sinus physiology, even in difficult areas of the frontal sinus outflow tract. Rarely is it necessary to perform radical or obliterative frontal sinus procedures, although…

An 11-year-old child developed an infection of the scalp due to anaerobic germs following an acute attack of frontal sinusitis. The mechanism and therapy of this rare complication are discussed. The favorable outcome in this case suggests the need for revision of the generally poor prognosis of this complication, on the condition that adequate treatment be applied under the control of a multidisciplinary team.

Background and Objectives: Frontal recess cells (FRCs) are key anatomical variants influencing frontal sinus drainage and disease. The Inter … ly correlated with sinusitis, while the presence of supra bulla cells was inversely associated with frontal sinusitis (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.41-0.93, p = 0.01). The presence of FRC type was not significantly associated with the degree of sinusitis (p > 0.05). Significant gender differences were observed in supra orbital ethmoid cells (p = 0.01), with a male predomin …

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive approaches to the anterior cranial fossa have evolved over the past few decades. The management of frontal epidural abscesses (EDAs) secondary to diffuse sinusitis in the pediatric population using minimally invasive techniques is scarcely reported in the literature. Herein, we report the utilization of a minimally invasive eyebrow approach for multidisciplinary concurrent evacuation of frontal EDA secondary to diffuse sinusitis and trephination of the frontal sinus in three pediatric patients.
CASE REPORTS: Three pediatric patients presented to the emergency ro

Acute rhinosinusitis is a common infectious disease, which, in more than 90% of cases, is caused by viruses rather than by bacteria. Even so, antibiotics are often unnecessarily prescribed, and in the long run this contributes to the alarming level of antibiotics resistance. The reason is that there are no good guiding tools for defining the background reason of the infection. One main factor for the clearance of the infection is if there is non-obstructed ventilation from the sinus to the nasal cavity. Gas in Scattering Media Absorption Spectroscopy (GASMAS) has potential for diagnosing this.

The purpose of this study was to determine the possible role of nasal septal deviation on volume of maxillary and frontal sinuses. Between F … ptal deviation on frontal sinus volume was not detected. The probability to encounter maxillary and frontal sinusitis ipsilateral to the all septum deviation groups was significantly increased in both right- and left-sided subjects.

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of a woman who had combined aplasia of sphenoid, frontal, and maxillary sinuses accompanied by ethmoid sinus hypoplasia.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 47-year-old woman presented with complaints of headache, nasal obstruction, and postnasal drainage. She had no previous history of either facial trauma or systemic diseases affecting the skeletal system. She had a history of functional endoscopic sinus surgery twice in an other institution. However, the surgeries did not significantly alter her symptoms. Coronal and axial computed tomographic scans of the nose and the par

Two cases of epidural abscess as a complication of frontal sinusitis are presented. The diagnoses were suspected on the basis of history and were confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. Both patients were treated successfully by means of surgery and intravenous antibiotics. One patient developed meningitis in the postoperative course and was treated by changing the antibiotic regimen. However, further follow-up in the outpatient clinic by physical examinations and brain computed tomography scans showed no longterm neurologic complications in either case. Intracranial s…

Many methods have been used to identify unknown persons. The most common is the study of fingerprints, which is one of the few methods in which data can be stored and retrieved in a precise and cost-effective manner. The asymmetry of the frontal sinuses has stimulated several attempts to identify persons by analyzing measurements of the sinuses obtained from plain x-ray films. However, an objective and reproducible method has not been achieved. The objective of this paper is to report on a method of making standardized measurements of the frontal sinuses on radiographs and storing the resultan

We examined the patency of the ostium of the frontal sinus after endoscopic endonasal surgery for chronic sinusitis. This study involved one hundred and seventy-two nasal sides of ninety cases who underwent surgery in this unit in the preceding three-year period by the designated three surgeons. All patients were followed up for more than one year after surgery. We obtained a high postoperative patent rate of 90.1%. However, communication between the frontal and ethmoidal sinus could not be confirmed in 9.9% of the cases due to the presence of polyp or adhesion in the middle meatus. Cases with
