Because human duodenal mucosal bicarbonate secretion (DMBS) protects duodenum against acid-peptic injury, we hypothesize that estrogen stimulates DMBS, thereby attributing to the clinically observed lower incidence of duodenal ulcer in premenopausal women than the age-matched men.
