Police Violence Exposure Among Young Adults in a U.S. National Probability Sample.

Police violence is a critical social determinant of health in the United States, but there is an absence of data on prevalence and sociodemographic disparities from national probability samples. This study aimed to determine the past-year prevalence of physical, sexual, psychological, and neglectful police violence exposure among young adults in the United States and to identify inequities in exposure. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the National Survey of Poly-Victimization and Suicide Risk, a population-based probability sample of noninstitutionalized young adults (18-29 years; N

Differential Impacts of an Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Program Based on Child Marriage Status in Rural Côte d'Ivoire.

PURPOSE: Little is known about whether effectiveness of intimate partner violence prevention programming varies for women who were married as child brides, given their additional social vulnerabilities. This subanalysis sought to assess treatment heterogeneity based on child marriage status for an intervention seeking to reduce intimate partner violence. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial assessing the incremental effectiveness of gender dialogue groups in addition to group savings on changing past-year intimate partner violence was conducted in Côte d'Ivoire (2010-2012). Stratified model

Gender Differences in the Relationship Between Interpersonal Childhood Adversities and Later Life Depressive Symptoms.

There is very little research on the relationship between interpersonal adverse childhood experiences and depressive symptoms in later adulthood in China. This study examines gender differences in the relationships between childhood physical abuse, bullying victimization, witnessing domestic violence, and depressive symptoms in Chinese middle-aged and older adults, controlling for self-rated physical health and sociodemographic characteristics. The study was based on a nationally representative sample of 4,775 males and 5,596 females aged 45 and older collected through the China Health and Reti

The unmothering of care: childhood disability, structural violence, and the politicisation of motherhood.

This article traces the intersection of gendered reproductive labour with disability discrimination, through an ethnographic exploration of families raising children with Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) in Barranquilla, Colombia. In this paper I will demonstrate how societal ableism intersects with the patriarchal institution of motherhood to shape the experiences of individual mothers raising disabled children. Children living with impairments caused by vertical transmission of Zika (CZS) experience structural violence due to the societal ableism, 'familism' (Gesser et al., 2022) and the neo-l

Child Abuse in Natural Disasters and Conflicts: A Systematic Review.

Violence against children affects a significant portion of youth around the world. Emergencies and natural disasters escalate the risk due to weakened child protection systems and disruption of preventative mechanisms. In this systematic review, 692 related papers were searched in various databases in the initial search. After review, 11 papers were finally selected for full review. These papers were selected based on publication date, relevance to emergencies, their geographical area type of violence, age of subjects, and their gender. Most families affected by natural disasters, especially t

Prevalence of interpersonal violence against women and men in New Zealand: results of a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence rates of non-partner and partner violence (IPV) in men and women from a population-based study. METHODS: We recruited 2,887 randomly selected respondents (1,464 women and 1,423 men) from three regions of New Zealand between 2017 and 2019. Face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire adapted from the WHO multi-country study on violence against women was used for data collection. RESULTS: Physical violence by non-partners was most commonly experienced by men (39.9% lifetime exposure) compared with 11.9% of women. More women (8.2%) experienced lifetime non-pa

Prevalence of intimate partner violence against women in Republic of Benin.

The present study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) of reproductive age in Benin and to assess the factors related to the experience of IPVAW and attitude towards wife beating among women. The study also assessed whether a family history of violence is a risk factor for experiencing IPVAW. The study used the Benin Demographic and Health Survey 2017-18 data for analyses. A national representative sample of 4488 ever married women was selected to respond to a domestic violence and abuse questionnaire. Cross-tabulation and multivariate log

Intimate Partner Violence: A Stochastic Model.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been a well-studied problem in the past psychological literature, especially through its classical methodology such as qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. This article introduces two basic stochastic models as an alternative approach to simulate the short and long-term dynamics of a couple at risk of IPV. In both models, the members of the couple may assume a finite number of states, updating them in a probabilistic way at discrete time steps. After defining the transition probabilities, we first analyze the evolution of the couple in isolation and

"I would like to know what happened to me": coerced and involuntary sterilisation of women seeking asylum in the USA.

OBJECTIVES: Involuntary sterilisation, the non-consensual medical control of an individual's fertility, is recognised by the WHO, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and UN Women as a serious human rights violation and form of gender-based violence. Survivors of involuntary sterilisation who can prove they were sterilised in their countries of origin have a legal path to asylum in the USA. This study aims to describe the experiences of women seeking asylum in the USA who were subjected to involuntary sterilisation in their countries of origin. DESIGN: Semistructured, first-person in…

From Non-Traditional Sexual Behavior to Non-Legitimate Victims: Moral Virtue, Victim Blame, and Helping Intentions Toward a Woman Victim of Image-Based Sexual Abuse.

Image-based sexual abuse represents an increasingly common form of gender-based violence, consisting of the act of non-consensually capturing, distributing, or threatening to distribute sexually explicit material depicting another person. The purpose of the present study was to investigate how women victims' noncompliance with traditional female sexuality influences bystanders' perceptions of the phenomenon. Specifically, we experimentally examined whether a woman's sexual agency (high vs. low) and the length (steady vs. transient) of the relationship with the perpetrator affected her moral ev…

The Behavioral Health Harms of Youth Exposure to Gun Violence: A Rhode Island Example.

BACKGROUND: Youth exposure to gun violence is increasing and we must better understand its impact on mental health and substance use disorders in young adults. METHODS: The 2024 Rhode Island Young Adult Survey recruited n=1,008 young adults. Multivariable logistic regressions were used for mental illness and substance use disorder outcomes on exposure to gun violence in childhood while controlling for sexual and gender identity, race/ethnicity, age, and social ladder. RESULTS: Exposure to gun violence in childhood is highly prevalent (24.7%) and associated with higher odds of depression (AOR

Interviewing Male Survivors of Sexual Violence and Abuse: Ethical and Methodological Considerations.

Existing research explores ethical and methodological considerations associated with interviewing men, including male survivors of domestic abuse, and interviewing female survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. However, there is no comparable body of research that specifically considers interviewing male survivors of sexual violence and abuse. Reflecting upon our experiences of interviewing 32 male survivors of female-perpetrated sexual violence, we critically discuss four key ethical and methodological issues that arose; the challenges around recruiting male survivor participants; the intervi

The Aggressive Gender Backlash in Intimate Partner Relationships: A Theoretical Framework and Initial Measurement.

This study introduces and validates a novel instrument to measure aggressive gender backlash (AGB), a distinct and underexplored dimension of gender backlash (GB) within intimate partner relationships. Based on the General Aggression Model, a multidimensional scale was developed and tested using data from 513 Peruvian female microentrepreneurs. Results demonstrate solid evidence of reliability, discriminant validity, and predictive validity across five dimensions: hostility, the withdrawal of support, sabotage/coercion, gender stereotyping, and masculine victimization. The findings reveal that
