BACKGROUND: Social media have transformed plastic surgery, intersecting patient education, provider marketing, and academic interactions across the globe. Despite this, social media are seldom used in research. The authors sought to understand the primary incentives and deterrents for patient participation in research efforts.
METHODS: Facebook groups for craniosynostosis families were identified; the largest two had 11,000 and 7200 members. Facebook group administrators were asked to post an open invitation to enroll in the authors' study. Interested participants contacted study personnel di

Turner syndrome, a congenital condition that affects ∼1/2,500 births, results from absence or structural alteration of the second sex chromosome. There has been substantial effort by numerous clinical and genetic research groups to delineate the clinical, pathophysiological, cytogenetic, and molecular features of this multisystem condition. Questions about the molecular-genetic and biological basis of many of the clinical features remain unanswered, and health care providers and families seek improved care for affected individuals. The inaugural "Turner Resource Network (TRN) Symposium" brough…

Despite the increased diagnostic yield associated with genomic sequencing (GS), a sizable proportion of patients do not receive a genetic diagnosis at the time of the initial GS analysis. Systematic data reanalysis leads to considerable increases in genetic diagnosis rates yet is time intensive and leads to questions of feasibility. Few policies address whether laboratories have a duty to reanalyse and it is unclear how this impacts clinical practice. To address this, we interviewed 31 genetic health professionals (GHPs) across Europe, Australia and Canada about their experiences with data rea

Over the past two decades, investigators have used whole genome linkage and genome-wide association studies, including the "Immunochip" study, to identify a surprising number (over 163) of genetic loci containing susceptibility genes for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and its 2 major phenotypes, Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). These loci, although nearly all low-risk, have provided important lessons regarding the nature of IBD etiopathogenesis, including that most loci cause both CD and UC risk; one-third of loci have risk for other common autoimmune diseases; numerous loci

Gregory, Kenneth F. (Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, Ontario, Canada), and Jay C. C. Huang. Tyrosinase inheritance in Streptomyces scabies. I. Genetic recombination. J. Bacteriol. 87:1281-1286. 1964.-Mutants derived from Streptomyces scabies strain A26 recombined with other derivatives of A26, but not with nine other strains of S. scabies nor with eight strains of other streptomycetes. Most of the spore progeny of heterogenomic mycelia formed from complementary diauxotrophic strains of S. scabies A26 were capable of forming tyrosinase (tye(+)), provided either of the parents was tye(+).

The paper presents findings from an ethnography of dysmorphology, a specialism in genetic medicine, to explore genetic counselling as a process through which parents 'become informed.' Current professional and policy debate over the use of genetic technology in medicine emphasises the need for informed choice making, and for genetic services that provide parents with what is referred to as 'non-directive genetic counselling.' In the paper the process of becoming informed is shown to be very specific and to have its own effects. Specifically, genetics is performed in dysmorphology as a space of

Although we have studied schizophrenia as a major disease entity over the past century, its causes and pathogenesis remain obscure. In this article, we critically review genetic and other epidemiological findings and discuss the insights they provide into the causes of schizophrenia. The annual incidence of schizophrenia averages 15 per 100,000, the point prevalence averages approximately 4.5 per population of 1000, and the risk of developing the illness over one's lifetime averages 0.7%. Schizophrenia runs in families and there are significant variations in the incidence of schizophrenia, wit

The genetic mechanisms of how free-living nematodes evolved into parasites are unknown. Current genetic model nematodes (e.g. Caenorhabditis elegans) are not well suited to provide the answer, and mammalian parasites are expensive and logistically difficult to maintain. Here we propose the terrestrial gastropod parasite Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita as a new alternative to study the evolution of parasitism, and outline the methodology of how to keep P. hermaphrodita in the lab for genetic experiments. We show that P. hermaphrodita (and several other Phasmarhabditis species) are easy to isolate

Prenatal Exome Sequencing (pES) increases the diagnostic rate for genetic disorders in pregnancies with structural abnormalities and substantially impacts parental decision-making regarding pregnancy continuation or termination. Previous qualitative research on parental experiences of pES has typically been performed several months after results were returned to parents. Moreover, parental experiences of pES might be dependent on cultural aspects and country-specific healthcare systems. This research therefore prospectively explores experiences of families undergoing pES in the Netherlands. Ex

Recall by genotype (RbG) studies aim to better understand the phenotypes that correspond to genetic variants of interest, by recruiting carriers of such variants for further phenotyping. RbG approaches pose major ethical and legal challenges related to the disclosure of possibly unwanted genetic information. The Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study is a longitudinal cohort study based in South Tyrol, Italy. Demand has grown for CHRIS study participants to be enrolled in RbG studies, thus making the design of a suitable ethical framework a pressing need. We here report upon

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hereditary hearing loss has historically been approached as a diagnostic category rather than a therapeutically modifiable disease. Recent advances in molecular genetics, cochlear gene delivery, and first-in-human clinical trials are changing that. This review summarizes contemporary progress in the genetics of hearing loss, with emphasis on emerging gene-based therapies, clinical trial design, regulatory and ethical considerations, and practical implications for otolaryngologists as biologic treatment enters clinical practice.
RECENT FINDINGS: Early clinical trials targeti

BACKGROUND: International collaboration on genetic/genomic studies has expanded dramatically. Informed consent remains a cornerstone for protecting participant autonomy. Over the past few decades, guidelines, recommendations, and theoretical discussions have been published on the informed consent process in cross-cultural contexts, particularly in Africa. These resources suggest best practices-ranging from assessing participant comprehension to engaging local communities. However, it remains unclear how well the current practices address the full range of informed consent challenges encountere

PURPOSE: Return of individual research results from genomic studies is a hotly debated ethical issue in genomic research. However, the perspective of key stakeholders-institutional review board (IRB) professionals-has been missing from this dialogue. This study explores the positions and experiences of IRB members and staff regarding this issue.
METHODS: In-depth interviews with 31 IRB professionals at six sites across the United States.
RESULTS: IRB professionals agreed that research results should be returned to research participants when results are medically actionable but only if the pa

Although issues involved in offering individual results to participants in genomic research have received considerable attention, communication of aggregate results has been the subject of relatively little ethical analysis. Offering participants aggregate results is typically assumed to be a good thing, and studies have found that a significant majority of biobank research participants, when asked about their interest in aggregate results, say that access to such information would be important. Even so, return of aggregate results remains a relatively uncommon practice. In this article, we ex

Some employers offer genetic testing for increased cancer and cardiovascular disease risk, as well as pharmacogenetic variants, as a wellness benefit, which presents unique considerations for genetic counseling. Our ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genomics study, positioned in a post-positivist paradigm, aimed to qualitatively assess the perspectives and experiences of genetic counselors (GCs) who had counseled on workplace genetic testing (wGT). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 US GCs who either worked in the wGT industry (i.e., role-directed wGT experience)

With advances in next-generation sequencing technologies, individuals can seek genetic risk information for multiple conditions. However, feasibility and communication challenges could arise if offering multiple genetic tests simultaneously, such as cancer predisposition testing and carrier screening for pregnancy planning. Genetic screening introduces uncertainty from probabilistic results, ambiguous gene-disease associations, and complex variant interpretation, intertwining with psychosocial concerns impacting decision-making and emotional well-being. This study utilized coding reliability t

Germline genetic testing has been increasingly conducted for treatment implications in patients with prostate cancer due to the expansion of testing eligibility. Understanding patients' comprehension of genetic results is crucial for establishing effective result disclosure practices. This importance has grown due to the increasing prevalence of negative genetic results being conveyed via electronic communication and by providers without a genetics specialization. This study explores patients with prostate cancer's perceptions of genetic results communication. We analyzed 24 qualitative, semi-
