A 56-year-old man was admitted to hospital with complaints of headache, fever and photophobia, 3 weeks after being bitten by ticks in Southern Germany. Two weeks before admission he had experienced a short period of a flu-like illness, from which he spontaneously recovered. BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies demonstrate a prevalence of Adamantiades-Behçet's disease (ABD) in the range of 0.12-420 per 100,000 inhabitants, with the highest rates in Istanbul, Turkey, and the lowest rates in the USA. Ophthalmological data on the prevalence of ocular involvement are limited for ABD in Germany, because most epidemiological studies are based on rheumatological or dermatological data. Berlin is the city with the highest number of non-native German inhabitants, and its multi-ethnic character renders it uniquely appropriate for epidemiological studies on ABD.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-transmitted flavivirus, widely distributed throughout Africa, Asia and the Middle East. WNV may cause epidemics of human meningoencephalitis. This study aims to provide information on the occurrence of spotted fever rickettsiae in Ixodes ricinus ticks in southern Germany. A total of 2,141 I. ricinus ticks was collected in Bavaria. Pools of 5-10 ticks were studied by a PCR targeting the rickettsial citrate synthase gene gltA. The average prevalence rate was 12% (257 of 2,141). Sequencing data exclusively identified Rickettsia helvetica DNA. Results and other data demonstrate the possible role of R. helvetica in I. ricinus as a source of human infections in southern Germany.

This is the second report on an isolation of the variety raubitschekii of Trichophyton (T.) rubrum in Germany. The epidemiology of Q fever in Germany was examined by reviewing relevant studies since 1947 and by analyzing available surveillance data since 1962. The average annual Q fever incidence nationwide from 1979 to 1989 was 0.8 per million and from 1990 to 1999, 1.4 per million. The mean annual incidence from 1979 to 1999 ranged from a minimum of 0.1 per million in several northern states to 3.1 per million in Baden-Württemberg, in the South. STUDY OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: For the APHEA study, the short term effects of air pollutants on human health were investigated in a comparable way in various European cities. Daily mortality was used as one of the health effects indicators. This report aims to demonstrate the steps in epidemiological model building in this type of time series analysis aimed at detecting short term effects under a poisson distribution assumption and shows the tools for decision making. Coalmining in Germany is performed in depths as low as 1400 m. Owing to an average thermal gradient of 30 m/K the work underground is burdened by heat stress to which occupational medicine must pay special attention. Therefore heat stress standards and mining safety regulations have been set up not only for coal production but also for mine rescue activities. This specific situation of heat burdened work in the coal mining industry in Germany is discussed under the specific aspects of German coalmining regulations (Klima-Bergverordnung und Plan für das Grubenrettungswesen).

An account is given in this paper of first experience from orthotopic heart transplantation. Six of eight patients with transplants have so far survived, with two of these having been in very good general condition for more than a year. All surgical indications were derived from myocardial dilatation. A triple combination of cyclosporine A, prednisone, and azathioprine was used for immunosuppression.
