We report a case of apraxia with pantomime where the patient exhibited body part as object (BPO) and hand closing-in errors as the symptoms of apraxia. The patient was a 52-year-old right-handed man who was clinically diagnosed with corticobasal degeneration. We tested the praxis ability of the patient by using 2 standard tests for apraxia: transitive gestures in response to verbal command and transitive gestures in response to visually presented objects. During the tests, the patient showed BPO errors and occasionally reached for the presented objects when he was instructed to pantomime their…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A set of important pragmatic skills emerge during infancy and pave the way for later language learning. It is tho … use of 5 types of infant communication known to positively predict later language development (show gestures, give gestures, index-finger pointing, communicative vocalizations, and early word use) was compared with that of 8 typically hearing infants matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status.
RESULTS: Hearing loss had a significant negative effect on …

PURPOSE: Analyze and compare the mean tongue contours and articulatory gestures in the production of the sound [j] in adults and children with typical and atypical speech development. The children with atypical development presented speech sound disorders.
METHODS: The diagnosis was determined by speech assessments. The study sample was composed of 90 individuals divided into three groups: 30 adults with typical speech development aged 19-44 years (AT), 30 children with typical speech development (CT), and 30 children with speech sound disorders, named as atypical in this study, aged four yea…

Influential theories of skilled action posit that distinct cognitive mechanisms and neuroanatomic substrates support meaningless gesture imitation and tool use pantomiming, and poor performance on these tasks are hallmarks of limb apraxia. Yet prior research has primarily investigated brain-behavior relations at the group level; thus, it is unclear whether we can identify individuals with isolated impairments in meaningless gesture imitation or tool use pantomiming whose performance is associated with a distinct neuroanatomic lesion profile. The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis th

Introduction: Upper limb apraxia is a post stroke disorder affecting the persons' ability to perform everyday activities. This review aimed to determine the effectiveness of interventions on occupational performance outcomes. Method: A systematic review of literature (2000-2022) across five electronic databases was conducted. PRISMA guidelines were applied. Data were pooled using RevMan. Findings: Four studies reporting findings from three randomised controlled trials were included. The methodological quality of studies was low. Three treatment approaches were reported: (1) strategy training (

The anthropomorphic grasping capability of prosthetic hands is critical for enhancing user experience and functional efficiency. Existing prosthetic hands relying on brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and electromyography (EMG) face limitations in achieving natural grasping due to insufficient gesture adaptability and intent recognition. While vision systems enhance object perception, they lack dynamic human-like gesture control during grasping. To address these challenges, we propose a vision-powered prosthetic hand system that integrates two innovations. Spatial Geometry-based Gesture Mapping (

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a multi-system disorder that commonly affects cognition and behaviour. Verbal fluency impairments are … tasks. Patients were impaired only on meaningful gesture fluency, which requires the generation of gestures that communicate meaning (e.g., waving). On phonemic fluency, ALS patients showed a 'drop off' pattern of performance, where they had difficulty maintaining responding over time, but this pattern was not evident on the other fluency tasks. Apathy di …

BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) appear to have a unique awareness of their own body, which may be associated with difficulties of gestural interaction. In typically developing (TD) individuals, the perception of body parts is processed in various brain regions. For instance, activation of the lateral occipito-temporal cortex (LOTC) is known to depend on perspective (i.e., first- or third-person perspective) and identity (i.e., own vs. another person's body). In the present study, we examined how perspective and identity affect brain activation in individuals with AS

INTRODUCTION: Apraxias, traditionally viewed as executive disorders secondary to focal lesions, are here reformulated as systemic outcomes of progressive interhemispheric disconnection-particularly relevant in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.
OBJECTIVE: To propose an integrated theoretical model that redefines apraxias from a neurosemiotic and embodied perspective, linking them to corpus callosum degeneration and the breakdown of sensorimotor gesture networks.
METHODS: This contribution is based on a transdisciplinary conceptual review, integrating data from neuroscience, body semiot

Padel is a racket sport, combining high-frequency and low-intensity athletic gestures, that has been gaining growing scientific interest in recent years. Musculoskeletal injuries are very common among padel players with an incidence rate of 3 per 1000 h of training and 8 per 1000 matches. To the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive collection describing the most common sonographic findings in padel players with musculoskeletal injuries is lacking in the pertinent literature. In this sense, starting from the biomechanical features of padel-specific gestures we have reported the ultrasonograph…

The current study described the progression of limb apraxia in seven corticobasal syndrome patients through a comprehensive battery, including both gesture production tasks and conceptual tool/action knowledge tasks. The examination of the behavioral and neuroimaging (SPECT) data revealed two patient subgroups. One group consisted of patients with preserved conceptual tool/action knowledge, relatively mild gesture production and neuropsychological deficits with few significantly hypoperfused regions of interest. The other group consisted of those whose conceptual tool/action knowledge and gene

Impaired imitation of skilled gestures is commonly reported in autism. Questions, however, remain as to whether impaired imitation is associated with a more generalized deficit in performance of gestures consistent with a dyspraxia and whether the pattern of errors differs from that observed in typically developing children. To address these questions, praxis in 21 high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) was compared with 24 typically developing controls using a traditional approach in which performance was evaluated through detailed examination of error types. Children …

Two models have been suggested to depict the relationship between disorders of limb and orofacial praxis. The first views apraxia as a unitary disorder in which the underlying mechanisms for each type are similar, while the second model suggests that there are two separate praxis systems: one for planning and controlling limb gestures and a second one for planning and controlling orofacial movements. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a common mechanism may underlie deficits in limb and orofacial praxis in children. This was done by analyzing the types of praxis errors demons…

Stroke-induced motor impairment necessitates objective and quantitative assessment tools for rehabilitation planning. In this study, a gesture-specific framework based on high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) was developed to characterize neuromuscular dysfunction using eight macroscopic features and two microscopic motor unit decomposition features. HD-sEMG recordings were collected from stroke patients (n = 11; affected and unaffected sides) and healthy controls (n = 8; dominant side) during seven standardized hand gestures. Feature-level comparisons revealed hierarchical abnormali…

For many deaf people, lip-reading plays a major role in verbal communication. However, lip movements are by nature ambiguous, so that lip-reading does not allow for a full understanding of speech. The resulting language access difficulties may have serious consequences on language, cognitive and social development. Cued speech (CS) was developed to eliminate this ambiguity by complementing lip-reading with hand gestures, giving access to the entire phonological content of speech through the visual modality alone. Despite its proven efficiency for improving linguistic and communicative abilitie…

In face-to-face contexts, discourse is accompanied by various cues, like gestures and mouth movements. Here, we asked whether the presence of gestures and mouth movements benefits discourse comprehension under clear and challenging listening conditions and, if so, whether this multimodal benefit depends on the communicative environment in which interlocutors are situated. In two online experiments, participants watched videoclips of a speaker telling stories, and they answered yes-no questions about the content of each story. The speaker in the videos was spontaneously gesturing (or kept her h…
