Three Cases of Palatal Tics and Gilles De La Tourette Syndrome.

Five patients with palatal tics and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome have been previously reported. Little is known about the characteristics of palatal tics given that there are so few reports. On one hand, palatal tics may be rare. Alternatively, they may be less well recognized than repetitive eye blinking or sniffing, which are both obvious and, therefore, more often reported. We describe 3 patients with palatal tics and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. We also review the 5 patients reported in the literature and explore whether there are characteristic features among this group of 8 cases. T

Gill bacteria enable a novel digestive strategy in a wood-feeding mollusk.

Bacteria play many important roles in animal digestive systems, including the provision of enzymes critical to digestion. Typically, complex … partment where wood is digested but harbor endosymbiotic bacteria within specialized cells in their gills. We show that this comparatively simple bacterial community produces wood-degrading enzymes that are selectively translocated from gill to gut. These enzymes, which include just a small subset of the predicted wood-degrading enzymes encoded in the e …

Altered intrahemispheric structural connectivity in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a common developmental neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by tics and frequent psychiatric comorbidities, often causing significant disability. Tic generation has been linked to disturbed networks of brain areas involved in planning, controlling and execution of actions, particularly structural and functional disorders in the striatum and cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical loops. We therefore applied structural diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to characterize changes in intrahemispheric white matter connectivity in cortico-subcortical circuits engaged i

Comet assay in gill cells of Prochilodus lineatus exposed in vivo to cypermethrin.

Agricultural chemicals can induce genetic alterations on aquatic organisms that have been associated with effects on growth, reproduction and population dynamics. The evaluation of DNA damage in fish using the comet assay (CA) frequently involves the utilization of erythrocytes. However, epithelial gill cells (EGC) can be more sensitive, as they are constantly dividing and in direct contact with potentially stressing compounds from the aquatic environment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate (1) the sensitivity and suitability of epithelial gill cells of Prochilodus lineatus in respon

Echoes from childhood--imitation in Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome patients are reported to show automatic imitation (echopraxia), but this has not yet been proven experimentally. METHODS: Video clips showing either tics of other Tourette patients or spontaneous movements of healthy subjects were presented to Tourette patients and healthy subjects. Participants' responses were assessed using blinded review of video recordings by 2 independent raters and related to stimuli presented. RESULTS: Both raters detected more echoes in patients. In a permutation analysis, no healthy subject had echoes above chance level. In contrast, 6

Imitation in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome--a behavioral study.

Echophenomena in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) may relate to deficient processing of observed biological movements. This would be reflected in altered effects of movement observation on motor responses in these patients. We studied reaction times in 11 unmedicated GTS patients without psychiatric comorbidity and healthy subjects. In experiment 1, participants imitated single biological finger movement stimuli or nonbiological dot movement stimuli immediately. In experiment 2, participants responded to a tone while viewing biological or nonbiological movement stimuli that were either com

The influence of gill and liver metabolism on the predicted bioconcentration of three pharmaceuticals in fish.

The potential for xenobiotic compounds to bioconcentrate is typically expressed through the bioconcentration factor (BCF), which has gained increased regulatory significance over the past decade. Due to the expense of in vivo bioconcentration studies and the growing regulatory need to assess bioconcentration potential, BCF is often calculated via single-compartment models, using K(OW) as the primary input. Recent efforts to refine BCF models have focused on physiological factors, including the ability of the organism to eliminate the compound through metabolic transformation. This study looks

Determinants of quality of life in children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

The objective of this study is to assess the association between tic severity, attention deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and quality of life (QOL) in children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). GTS is a multidimensional disorder with disturbances in motor function and behavior. However, little is known about what variables are associated with QOL in these patients. We evaluated 56 outpatients with a diagnosis of GTS. The mean age was 10 (range 5-17 years). Tics were assessed with the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS). Behavioral scales included the Leyton Obsessio

Complementary and alternative medicine use in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

The aim of this study was to describe the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) and explore associations with CAM use. In recent years CAM use has increased, but rates of CAM use in TS patients are not reported. Consecutive TS patients or their parent(s), seen in an academic movement disorder center, completed a questionnaire regarding their use of CAM. One hundred TS patients or parents completed the questionnaire, mean age 21.5 +/- 13.5, 76 males, 87 Caucasians. Sixty four patients had used at least one CAM modality. CAM treatments used w

Aripiprazole in the pharmacotherapy of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in adult patients.

Despite the ongoing development of neuroleptics, typical or first-generation neuroleptics are still considered as the first choice in the treatment of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). In many European countries, tiapride is the first line of treatment favoured in most cases, while risperidone, pimozide and haloperidol are listed as second choice. Unfortunately, antipsychotics often show tachyphylactic effects in the treatment of GTS so that a switch to another neuroleptic agent becomes inevitable. Thus it is important to ensure a wide selection of different drugs is available. Another pro

[Quetiapine in the treatment of the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. A case study].

In this article we describe the clinical response of an 8-year-old boy with the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) when treated with quetiapine. Upon admission for observation he received a trial course of quetiapine, to which he responded favourably. We searched the Medline and Psycinfo databases for information about the recommended dose of quetiapine for children with GTS. From the 12 case-studies and one open-label trial that we found, we conclude that the maximum dose of quetiapine for children with GTS is 200 mg. Data concerning the safety of quetiapine when administered to children ar

[Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: a self-administered assessment questionnaire].

INTRODUCTION: An association of patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome enabled us to gather a large body of information regarding the disease manifestations, and patient-perceived consequences. METHOD: 350 questionnaires were sent to patients belonging to the AFSGT (French Association of Patients Suffering from Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome). 187 responses were received (53 percent). The patients were divided into four groups: those with motor tics, vocal tics, complex tics and complex tics with coprolalia. This last group corresponds to the DSM IV definition of "Tourette Disorder". Th

HLA-DRB genotyping in Gilles de la Tourette patients and their parents.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder of unknown cause. There is, however, growing evidence that both autoimmune and genetic factors are involved in the pathogenesis of GTS. In classical autoimmune disorders such as diabetes mellitus or multiple sclerosis, genetic susceptibility is at least in part conferred by human leucocyte antigen (HLA-) subtypes, in particular by distinct HLA-DRB alleles. We undertook modern, PCR-based HLA-DRB typing in 83 trios (affected index child and both parents) to investigate whether GTS may be associated with a particular HLA-D

Objective assessments of longitudinal outcome in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To define the long-term outcome in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) using objective rating measures. BACKGROUND: Previous historical studies suggest spontaneous improvement of tic symptoms after adolescence, but objective longitudinal data are limited. METHODS: The authors reviewed all videotapes in their database (1978 through 1991) of children with GTS (ages 8 to 14) who were seen in their tertiary care movement disorder center and underwent a standardized 5-minute filming protocol (n = 56). Through multiple contact methods, they successfully located 36 of these patients, wh

Dopamine D2 receptor imaging in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To examine postsynaptic dopamine D2 receptors in Tourette syndrome (TS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventeen patients and a control group were investigated using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and iodobenzamide (123I-IBZM). RESULTS: In neuroleptic treated patients (n = 7) 123I-IBZM-binding was significantly reduced compared to both normal controls (P < 0.0001) and unmedicated patients (P < 0.001). In unmedicated patients (n = 10) mean binding ratio did not differ from that of control group. Patients in advanced stages of the disease, however, revealed significantl

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: symptomatic treatment based on evidence.

The treatment of the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome has evolved from case reports, clinical experience and more recently blinded trials usually in small numbers of patients. We have reviewed the evidence available to clinicians. The oldest and still most widely prescribed drug, haloperidol, should now not be considered the first-line agent in children as other agents have superior adverse effects profiles. Symptomatic treatment should be targeted to the specific additional psychopathologies seen in the syndrome. For the treatment of tics, sulpiride, tiapride, possibly pimozide and in some case

Neurorespiratory pattern of gill and lung ventilation in the decerebrate spontaneously breathing tadpole.

A decerebrate, spontaneously breathing tadpole preparation (Taylor-Kollros stages 16-19) was used to test the general hypothesis that the efferent bursting activities of cranial nerves (CN) V, VII and spinal nerve (SN) II are respiratory in nature, and, in particular, to identify separate and specific neural correlates of gill and lung ventilation. Oropharyngeal pressure (POP), intrapulmonary pressure (PIP), electromyogram (EMG) of the buccal levator muscle (interhyoideus), and efferent neural activities of CN V, CN VII and SN II were recorded while the animal was exposed to hyperoxia (100% in

Current status of genetic studies of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a familial, neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by chronic, intermittent motor and vocal tics. Despite strong evidence for a genetic basis of this disorder from family, twin, and adoption studies, no convincing evidence for genetic linkage has been reported. Numerous groups world-wide have searched for genetic susceptibility factors for TS, testing specific candidate genes in neurotransmitter systems as well as DNA markers with known locations. Several factors may complicate the search for genes for this disorder, including diagnostic uncertainties, d
