Treatment of isolated gingival recession by tunneled coronally advanced flap and orthodontics: A case report.

Gingival recession (GR) in malpositioned teeth with a thin periodontal phenotype poses a high risk during orthodontic movement. Phenotype modification before orthodontic treatment may reduce complications and improve clinical outcomes. A 27-year-old woman presented with a 3-mm RT2 gingival recession and<1 mm of keratinized tissue (KT) in tooth 31, which was labially displaced. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed the absence of the vestibular bone, and clinical evaluation confirmed a thin periodontal phenotype. To prevent GR progression during orthodontic movement, a tunneled coronall…

Single-stage regenerative approach for persistent RT3 gingival recession following orthodontic improvement of tooth position.

BACKGROUND: Management of gingival recession type 3 (RT3) defects remains a clinical challenge due to interproximal attachment loss and soft tissue deficiency. This case report describes a regenerative strategy for a malpositioned anterior tooth presenting with severe recession. METHODS AND RESULTS: Following orthodontic alignment to correct the tooth position, a single-stage regenerative surgery was performed using the entire papilla preservation technique (EPPT) combined with a modified connective tissue graft (m-CTG) wall and adjunctive biologically active regenerative materials, including…

Association Between Mandibular Anterior Crowding and Gingival Recession Following Orthodontic Treatment: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Gingival recession frequently affects the anterior mandibular region. Anatomical features, such as thin buccal bone, narrow keratinized gingiva, and root proximity, increase susceptibility to periodontal disease. Recession can progress over time and may be exacerbated by orthodontic treatment. However, it remains uncertain whether the severity of crowding before treatment contributes to recession after orthodontic therapy The present study aimed to determine whether a relationship exists between the degree of mandibular anterior crowding before orthodontic treatment and …

Clinical Outcomes of Periodontal Surgery Following Crown Reduction for Malocclusion-Associated Gingival Recession in Cats.

Gingival recession from traumatic occlusal contact commonly affects feline mandibular premolars and molars. Although crown reduction is routinely performed to eliminate traumatic occlusal forces, its ability to restore established periodontal defects remains unclear. This study evaluated whether adjunctive periodontal surgery provides additional clinical benefits following crown reduction. This retrospective study included 17 cats (34 teeth) with malocclusion-associated gingival recession. Treatment grouping was performed at the tooth level, with one cat contributing teeth to both the Control …

Comparative evaluation of VISTA using platelet-rich fibrin and placental membrane for multiple gingival recession.

Gingival recession is a prevalent clinical problem and limited evidence exists comparing biological membranes used with the VISTA technique for its correction. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the effectiveness of VISTA combined with Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) versus placental membrane in 20 sites with Miller's Class I/II recession. Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in all clinical parameters-including RD, RW, CAL, WKG and GT-over a 6-month period (p<0.001). Intergroup comparisons revealed no statistically significant differences between PRF and placental membrane across…

Radiation therapy for head and neck cancer leads to gingival recession associated with dental caries.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine effects of radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) on periodontal disease and … ll as proportion of decayed or filled facial/buccal surfaces specifically, (P < .001), with greater gingival recession associated with increased caries. CONCLUSIONS: RT for HNC leads to mandibular gingival recession in a dose-dependent manner. This gingival recession may contribute to increased risk for cervical caries seen in these patients.

Analysis of root coverage esthetic score in patients treated for gingival recession: An interexaminer reliability.

BACKGROUND: Awareness about pink esthetics among dentists in general needs to be assessed as root coverage procedures are the mainstay of treatment for gingival recession. Concordance among the dentists in figuring out the esthetic outcomes after root coverage procedures is inconsistent. Hence, this study aims to evaluate inter- and intra-examiner reliability of root coverage esthetic scores (RES) between periodontists and nonperiodontists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted using twenty baseline and 6-month posttreatment photographs of Miller's Class I and Class II gingival reces…

Rethinking the decision-making process to treat gingival recession associated with non-carious cervical lesions.

The presence of a tooth-surface defect, such as a non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL), associated with sites of gingival recession (GR) defects creates a combined soft tissue/tooth defect (CD) that requires a different treatment plan. This study aimed to critically review the literature regarding the available treatment protocols for CDs and suggest a new decision-making process. NCCLs were classified as Class A-: the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) was visible and the root surface discrepancy was < 0.5 mm (no step); Class A+: CEJ was visible and the root surface discrepancy was > 0.5 mm (with a s…

Clinical efficacy of periosteal pedicle graft with subepithelial connective tissue graft in gingival recession coverage.

INTRODUCTION: Correction of gingival recession (GR) involves eliminating the cause of recession and it often requires surgical correction. Subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) technique by Langer and Langer provides excellent esthetics and is considered most predictable in obtaining marginal tissue recession coverage. However, the requirement of a second surgical procedure for harvesting CTG remote from planned site of recession coverage increases the chances of postoperative infection. There is also a limitation in the amount of graft that can be harvested and an increased operative t…
