The size-distribution and protease content airborne particles in textile mill cardrooms.

The concentration of 1.-4 mum airborne particles and the protease content of the airborne dust measured in the cardrooms of ten cotton mills were found to correlate with byssinosis prevalence. Airborne proteases were found in abundance also in wool mills where byssinosis does not occur.

Ventilatory capacity changes on exposure to cotton dust and their relevance to byssinosis in Australia.

The same plan of investigation as was used in a previous study of jute workers (Gandevia and Milne, 1965) has been applied to a survey of 50 workers in the blowroom and carding and spinning area of a Sydney cotton mill. Significant decreases in ventilatory capacity were recorded on Friday, Monday, and the following Thursday, with, on the average, complete `overnight' recovery, as indicated by similar morning values. Slightly, but not significantly, greater differences were observed in seven subjects with mild byssinotic symptoms and in five subjects with an observed productive cough on request

Reductions in mesophyll conductance under drought stress are influenced by increases in cell wall chelator-soluble pectin content and denser microfibril alignment in cotton.

Plants commonly undergo leaf morphoanatomy and composition modifications to cope with drought stress, and these tend to reduce mesophyll conductance to CO2 diffusion (gm), a key limitation to photosynthesis. The cell wall appears to play a crucial role in this reduction, yet the specific effect of cell wall component on gm and the underlying regulatory mechanisms of cell wall thickness (Tcw) variation are not well understood. In this study, we subjected cotton plants to varying levels of water deficit to investigate the impact of leaf cell wall component and the arrangement patterns of microfi

Overexpression of Cotton Salicylic Acid Carboxyl Methyltransferase Genes GhSAMT1 and GhSAMT3 Enhances MeSA-Mediated Parasitoid Recruitment.

Methyl salicylate (MeSA), synthesized from salicylic acid (SA) by salicylic acid carboxyl methyltransferase (SAMT), plays a critical role in plant-insect-environment interactions. This study investigates SAMT-mediated MeSA biosynthesis in cotton and its manipulation for pest control. Volatile analyses showed MeSA emissions of 50.38 and 45.68 ng·plant-1 · 4 h-1 in herbivore- and SA-treated cotton, respectively. Transcriptomic analysis of cotton plants simultaneously infested with Apolygus lucorum and Helicoverpa armigera highlighted upregulation of both jasmonic acid and SA pathway genes, speci

A novel role of the cotton calcium sensor CBL3 was involved in Verticillium wilt resistance in cotton.

BACKGROUND: Verticillium wilt, causes mainly by the soilborne pathogen Verticillium dahliae, is a devastated vascular disease resulting in huge financial losses in cotton, so research on improving V. dahliae stress tolerance in cotton is the utmost importance. Calcium as the second messenger acts as a crucial role in plant innate immunity. Cytosolic Ca2+during the pathogen infection is a significant increase in plant immune responses. Calcineurin B-like (CBL) proteins are widely known calcium sensors that regulate abiotic stress responses. However, the role of cotton CBLs in response to V. dah

Understanding the potential impact of continued seed treatment use for resistance management in Cry51Aa2.834_16 Bt cotton against Frankliniella fusca.

Transgenic cotton expressing Cry51Aa2.834_16 Bt toxin (hereafter referred to as MON 88702) has the potential to be an important tool for pest management due to its unique activity against tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca. Unlike other Bt toxins targeting lepidopteran cotton pests, MON 88702 does not cause direct mortality but has an antixenotic effect that suppresses F. fusca oviposition. Previous work has shown neonicotinoid seed treated (NST) crops have similar behavioral effects on thrips. This study used non-choice and common garden experiments to examine how the presence of MON 88702 c

A comparative environmental and medical study of dust exposure in jute and cotton mills in Burma.

Jute is extensively cultivated and processed in Burma, as well as "lower-grade" cotton. This study was conducted there to compare dust exposure in jute and cotton mills, to study the acute and chronic effects of dust exposure on workers, and to establish exposure-response relationship. A sample of 799 male and female workers in two jute mills and two cotton textile mills, as well as a control group of 153 matching subjects, was examined, and dust exposure in the work environment was evaluated. Very high dust concentrations existed in the early stages of jute processing and sorting, which were

Acute pulmonary response to cotton bract extract in monkeys: lung function and effects of mediator modifying compounds.

It is well established that cotton dust inhalation can compromise lung function in textile workers. Challenges with a water-soluble extract of cotton bract (CBE) can also induce reversible airway obstruction in healthy volunteers. We have examined the effect of inhaled CBE in nonhuman primates and have attempted to inhibit the bronchoconstrictive response with mediator modifying compounds. CBE (34 mg/ml or 100 mg/ml) was administered via IPPB for 15 minutes (15 breaths/min) in 12 intubated, anesthetized, adult male monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Breath-by-breath determinations of pulmonary res

[Occupational lung diseases in Swiss cotton industry].

Classical byssinosis is hardly ever observed in Switzerland. The clinical picture of the other diseases of the lung occurring in the cotton industry is heterogeneous. In the present study the pathogenesis is considered allergic in the majority of the cases. Five typical, extensively investigated cases are presented. In provocation tests immediate asthmatic reactions were induced in the three patients who had positive immediate wheal-and-flare response to skin tests with an extract of cotton industry dust. Skin tests to common inhalants were negative. In addition, one patient showing a higher t

Variations of pulmonary function amongst workers in cotton mills.

Lung function studies and clinical examinations of 493 workers in eight cotton mills in New South Wales revealed 12 workers with byssinosis. The reasons for the low incidence of byssinosis in view of relatively high cotton dust in air concentrations are discussed briefly.

A comparative study of respiratory function in female non-smoking cotton and jute workers.

Valić, F., and Žuškin, E. (1971).Brit. J. industr. Med.,28, 364-368. A comparative study of respiratory function in female non-smoking cotton and jute workers. To compare the effect of cotton and jute dust, respiratory symptoms were studied and respiratory function measured in 60 cotton and 91 jute non-smoking female workers of similar age distribution, similar length of exposure to dust, and exposed to similar respirable airborne dust concentrations. Cotton workers had a significantly higher prevalence of byssinosis, of persistent cough, and of dyspnoea (P < 0·01) than jute workers. Among cot
