Syndemic Theory and Its Use in Developing Health Interventions and Programming: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The central tenet of syndemics theory is that disease interactions are driven by social factors, and that these factors have to be understood in order to reduce the health burdens of local populations. Without an understanding of the theory and how it is being put into practice, there is a strong possibility of losing the potential for syndemic theory to positively impact change at community and individual level. METHODS: Following an initial database search that produced 921 articles, we developed a multi-stage scoping review process identifying invention studies that empl

PARTICIPANTS: The four participants had previously worked in the west and were now working in India. METHODS: Employing a grounded theory approach data were analyzed using several coding procedures geared toward model development. RESULTS: For these four Indian doctors and nurses, job control was found to be grounded in two factors: type of work group control and a lack of control in the work environment…

Homeless for the First Time in Later Life: Uncovering More Than One Pathway.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Increasingly, researchers have recognized the heterogeneity with the growing population of older homeless adults. However, scant research has considered the complex pathways into first-time homelessness from the perspective of older adults themselves. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Through in-depth interviews, this constructivist grounded theory study aimed to address this gap by exploring the pathways of 15 adults, aged 50 years and older, into late-life homelessness. RESULTS: Two divergent pathways were revealed: gradual and rapid. Individuals with gradual pathways…

The Process of Motivating Oneself to Resist Being Controlled by Chronic Pain: A Qualitative Study of Japanese Older People Living in the Community.

Perceptions and experiences of chronic pain in older adults have not been fully explored. This study aimed to explore experiences and perceptions of life with chronic pain among older Japanese adults in the community. The grounded theory approach was used to identify a process model of older people's perceptions and experiences of living with chronic pain. Twenty-four people were recruited via snowball sampling. Ten participants had suffered from pain for 30 years or more. Data were collected through semistructured, individual interviews. Responses were transcribed verbatim, coded, and cluster…

The Role of Theory in the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Sport.

Sexual violence (SV) remains at epidemic proportions in the U.S. and growing evidence demonstrates that youth and adults engaged in sport are at increased risk of victimization and perpetration of SV. Unfortunately, sport SV prevention strategies are rarely built on theory or theoretically grounded evidence, despite demonstrated effectiveness of such approaches. This study aimed to answer to questions: 1) Which theories are relevant to the development of effective SV prevention strategies in sport?; and 2) How has theory been incorporated into existing SV prevention literature on sport safety?

Guided by priority: how clinicians manage access to opioid replacement therapy.

Access to opioid replacement therapy is a problem in some parts of Australia and it is not known how clinicians respond to this situation. The aim of this study is to develop a conceptual understanding of how clinicians apply clinical judgements in managing access to treatment. Grounded theory methodology was used to guide this study. Thirty-five clinicians were interviewed. The substantive theory presented to explain the process is Guided by Priority. By presenting this understanding of practice, clinicians can reflect on their actions related to the task and determine if they are beneficial …

Autopoiesis, Thermodynamics, and the Natural Drift of Living Beings: Another Way to the New Evolutionary Synthesis.

The New Evolutionary Synthesis (NES) groups a series of theories that, departing from the gene-centric approach of Modern Synthesis evolutionary theory (MS), place the organism as the central agent of evolution. Two versions of NES, each one with advantages and disadvantages, can be distinguished in this regard; the restrictive NES and the comprehensive NES. Comparatively, the comprehensive NES is a more robust theoretical construction than the restrictive one because it comes grounded on a general, thermodynamically informed theory of living beings (something that the restrictive NES lacks).

Drawing attention to difference: dilemmas in discussing dysmorphism with parents.

Dysmorphism is a sensitive topic to discuss with parents. Discussing dysmorphism requires careful thought, awareness of parent reactions, practice and reflection. Clinical practice suggests that barriers exist for both parents and health professionals, which make these discussions challenging. Here, we explored the challenges inherent in dialogue about dysmorphism and offer suggestions for communication strategies that are grounded in both theory and practice.

Incorporating "motivation" into the functional analysis of challenging behavior: on the interactive and integrative potential of the motivating operation.

Sensitivity theory attempts to account for the variability often observed in challenging behavior by recourse to the "aberrant motivation" of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In this article, we suggest that a functional analysis based on environmental (challenging environments) and biological (challenging needs) motivating operations provides a more parsimonious and empirically grounded account of challenging behavior than that proposed by sensitivity theory. It is argued that the concept of the motivating operation provides a means of integrating diverse strands of re

A Social-Ecological Model Exploring Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Screening Practices Among Antenatal Health Care Providers.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse health outcomes for the pregnant individual and their baby. Screening approaches for GDM have undergone several iterations, introducing variability in practice among healthcare providers. As such, our study aimed to explore the views of antenatal providers regarding their practices of, and counseling experiences on the topic of, GDM screening in Ontario. We conducted a qualitative, grounded theory study. The study population included antenatal providers (midwives, family physicians, and obstetricians) practicing in Hamilton, Ottawa…

Young men and anxiety: Resisting, reckoning and responding.

Anxiety is the most prevalent mental disorder experienced by young men, and when untreated, is predictive of co-morbid mental health challenges and suicide. Despite the rising prevalence, there is a conspicuous absence of qualitative research to distil and theorise young men's anxiety. Twenty-five young Australian men (15-25 years), who had been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder or self-reported anxiety symptoms, took part in individual semi-structured interviews. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a constructivist grounded theory approach. A three-process grounded theory…

"We Copy to Join in, to Not Be Lonely": Adolescents in Special Education Reflect on Using Dramatic Imitation in Group Dramatherapy to Enhance Relational Connection and Belonging.

This paper focuses on doctoral research which explored relationships and interpersonal learning through group dramatherapy and creative interviewing with adolescents in special education. A constructivist grounded theory study, positioning adolescents with intellectual/developmental disabilities as experts of their own relational experiences, revealed a tendency to "copy others." The final grounded theory presented "copying" as a tool which participants consciously employed "to play with," "learn from," and "join in with" others. Commonly experiencing social ostracism, participants reflected a…
