Tolerance for deviance: subjective evaluation of the social validity of the focus of treatment in mental retardation.

Staff members from an American institution, Israeli institutions, and a number of American group homes were asked to rate the social tolerability of 84 types of behavior that reflected either skill deficits or social maladaptation. There was considerable agreement among the three sample groups about the relative rank ordering of the 84 items. Physical violence and socially disgusting behavior were perceived as most intolerable whereas deficits in academic skills were least intolerable. The Israeli sample was uniformly less tolerant than either American sample.

Effects of Multicomponent Otago Exercise Program with Added Resistance Training on Sarcopenia in Pre-Frailty Older Adults in Nursing Homes: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The Otago Exercise Program (OEP) is suitable for frail older adults but has limited effect on sarcopenia. Resistance training (RT) is commonly used for sarcopenia. This study evaluated the effects of 12 weeks of OEP combined with RT on body composition, physical function, quality of life, and frailty in older adults with pre-sarcopenia in nursing homes. METHODS: Sixty-one pre-frail elderly (aged 65-89 years) with sarcopenia were randomly divided into experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). EG received OEP+RT training three times a week for 12 weeks, and CG maintained daily

The extent of support for ordinary living provided in staffed housing: the relationship between staffing levels, resident characteristics, staff: resident interactions and resident activity patterns.

Staffed housing has become an accepted alternative to institutional residential services for people with learning disabilities on the expectation that such provision will promote 'ordinary' patterns of living. Information on staffing levels and the behavioural characteristics of residents together with direct observational data on staff: resident interactions and resident engagement in activity were collected on 15 housing services in South Wales and analysed to explore the interrelationship between these key input and outcome variables. Staffing levels were found to be related to resident cha

Behavioral problems and medication utilization.

Although psychotropic medications are commonly used with older adults who have mental retardation, patterns of medication use for this group are not easily determined. Our objective was to explore relations between prescribed psychoactive treatments and rated behavioral difficulties. Adults with moderate mental retardation living in congregate and group care settings were rated by care providers using a standard behavior rating instrument. Older adults demonstrated a tendency toward higher medication utilization. Results indicated higher drug utilization in the larger setting despite the fact

Training caregivers: the development of an elder abuse prevention program.

As far as the authors know, their project is the only systematic effort to apply a psychosocial model to the prevention of elder abuse. They plan to disseminate the results of their project in the near future. Assuming positive results, they hope to encourage other practitioners and administrators to make such training available to caregivers.

Work dynamics in family care of hemophilic children.

School-aged boys with hemophilia, their parents, and siblings were interviewed and observed over a 5-year period, the field work taking place in their homes, schools, and during hospitalization, clinic visits, and summer camp periods. Sequential, open-ended interviews, and participant-observation techniques enabled the inquiry to study the process of the children's development as a major factor in changes that occurred in the management of their illness over time. Qualitative issues identified for study focused on the divisions of labor inherent in family interactions concerning the care of th

iMprovIng the meNtal hEalth of home healTh AiDeS: A study protocol for the MINDSET study.

Home health aides and attendants (HHAs) are a fast-growing healthcare workforce who are integral to the rising movement that allows older adults to age in place. However, HHAs themselves are a vulnerable group of caregivers. Mostly middle-aged women of color paid dismally low wages, HHAs' work is physically taxing, emotionally challenging, and socially isolating. Consequently, HHAs have high levels of depressive symptoms and stress. Prior studies suggest that HHAs want to address this, but do not know how and cannot access or afford traditional mental health services. Here we describe the prot

Teaching self-protection skills to persons with mental retardation.

A curriculum for teaching self-protection skills to eight adults with mild mental retardation was evaluated. The curriculum, which was presented in a small-group format across nine 25 to 30 minute sessions, uses instructions, modeling, rehearsal, feedback, and praise to teach skills needed to discriminate and safely respond to abduction and sexual abuse situations. Self-protection skills were assessed in in situ simulations involving solicitations from adults. Results showed that all but one subject learned the criterion skills and maintained them at a 6-month follow-up. Strengths and limitati

[Value of conversation groups in institutions for the elderly].

Development of group sessions with therapeutic aims have been started in institutions for the elderly in order to combat dementia for which no curative therapy exists at present. This study aims at testing the efficacy of a conversation group on the language of an elderly, depressed and demented population. Pre- and post-therapeutic check-ups and the comparison between a control group and a test group show, on the whole, that the test group's linguistic skills remained unchanged, whereas the control group's perceptibly worsened. Qualitatively, the syntaxical and oral comprehension skills, and

A trial of family therapy versus a relatives' group for schizophrenia. Two-year follow-up.

The results are reported of a two-year follow-up of a trial of family sessions in the home (including patients) (12 families) versus a relatives' group (excluding patients) (11 families). Subjects were patients with schizophrenia living in high face-to-face contact with high-EE relatives. Patients were maintained on neuroleptic drugs for two years where possible. Relatives' critical comments and hostility were significantly lowered by nine months, but no significant changes occurred subsequently. Relatives' overinvolvement reduced steadily throughout the trial, and reduction in relatives' EE,

[Outsiders in their own home: patients in a nursing home unit].

During a term of probation for the doctoral course in sociology at the university of Nijmegen a research was made for the relatinship between patients and staff on the ward of a nursing home. This relation was investigated with the use of Elias and Scotson's model of an established and outsiders figuration. In this figuaration are several sources of power, as fysical capacities, knowledge, key-positions and cohesion, important. These are considered more thoroughly. Some of the central problems of a nursing home are becoming more clear in the elaboratin of processes as exclusion and stigmatizat
