PURPOSE: Cold limb immersion, a form of cryotherapy, can cause cardiovascular changes due to cold-pain induced autonomic reflexes. This cryotherapy treatment side effect has received less attention but could have direct implications for physical rehabilitation of individuals with cardiovascular comorbidities.
METHODS: To test hypotheses related to the pressor effects of varied limb sites and surface areas of cryotherapy, two common lower limb injury sites (ankle and knee) were immersed into cold water (15 min, 1-3°C) and then referenced to a standard cold pressor test (CPT). Beat-by-beat arte

While research has primarily focused on establishing the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) exposure, relatively scant attention has been paid to the underlying working mechanisms that drive the effects. The present study examined the role of fearful expectancies and fear reduction (habituation) in VR exposure. Fearful expectancies were measured before, during (retrospectively), and after a VR exposure session in 121 participants with elevated fear of spiders. In addition, skin-conductance and heart rate were measured throughout the exposure session to examine fear reduction within the exercises

This study investigated stimulus-response patterns of temporal principal components analysis (PCA)-derived event-related potential (ERP) components in a classical auditory habituation paradigm with long interstimulus intervals. The skin conductance response (SCR) was included as the "gold standard" model of the Orienting Reflex. Thirty participants were presented with a single series of 10 identical 60 dB tones, followed by a change trial at a different frequency. Single-trial, electrooculography-corrected ERPs were submitted to temporal PCA. The main focus was on the components expected in th

BACKGROUND: A short ketogenic diet (KD) treatment can prevent migraine attacks and correct excessive cortical response. Here, we aim to prove if the KD-related changes of cortical excitability are primarily due to cerebral cortex activity or are modulated by the brainstem.
METHODS: Through the stimulation of the right supraorbital division of the trigeminal nerve, we concurrently interictally recorded the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR) and the pain-related evoked potentials (PREP) in 18 migraineurs patients without aura before and after 1-month on KD, while in metabolic ketosis. nBR and PREP

BACKGROUND: Here, we aim to identify cortical electrofunctional correlates of responsiveness to short-lasting preventiveintervention with ketogenic diet (KD) in migraine.
METHODS: Eighteen interictal migraineurs underwent visual (VEPs) and median nerve somatosensory (SSEPs) evokedpotentials before and after 1 month of KD during ketogenesis. We measured VEPs N1-P1 and SSEPs N20-P25 amplitudes respectively in six and in two sequential blocks of 100 sweeps as well as habituation as theslope of the linear regression between block 1 to 6 for VEPs or between 1 to 2 for SSEPs.
RESULTS: After 1-mont

Amantadine (AMA) is an uncompetitive antagonist of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor, with clinical application, acting on treatment of influenza A virus and Parkinson's disease. It has been proposed that AMA can indirectly modulate dopaminergic transmission. In high doses, the central nervous system is its primary site of toxicity. To examine deleterious effects on CNS induced by AMA, this study evaluated possible neurobehavioral alterations induced by AMA such as stereotyped behavior, the effects on locomotion and memory and its possible genotoxic/mutagenic activities. Neurological deficit and alterations in the hippocampus still frequently occur following bacterial meningitis in children, despite the antibiotic treatment. We investigated the long-term outcomes using early versus late antibiotic therapy in experimental pneumococcal meningitis. To this aim, male Wistar rats underwent a basilar cistern tap receiving either sterile saline as a placebo or an equivalent volume of a Streptococcus pneumoniae suspension. Antibiotics were started 8 or 16 h after infection and the animals were followed for 10 days to the determination of long-term cognitive outcomes.

Noradrenergic projections from the locus coeruleus (LC) project to the olfactory bulb (OB), a cortical structure implicated in odor learning and perceptual differentiation among similar odorants. The authors tested the role of OB noradrenaline (NA) in short-term olfactory memory using an animal model of LC degeneration coupled with intrabulbar infusions of NA. Specifically, the authors lesioned cortical noradrenergic fibers in mice with the noradrenergic neurotoxin N-Ethyl-N-(2-chloroethyl)-2-bromobenzylamine hydrochloride (DSP4) and measured the effects on an olfactory habituation/spontaneous

Core symptoms of autism include deficits in social interaction, impaired communication, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. The repetitive behavior domain encompasses abnormal motoric stereotypy, an inflexible insistence on sameness, and resistance to change. In recent years, many genetic mouse models of autism and related disorders have been developed, based on candidate genes for disease susceptibility. The present studies are part of an ongoing initiative to develop appropriate behavioral tasks for the evaluation of mouse models relevant to autism. We have previously reported profiles for

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that the transition from experimental to regular smoking is facilitated by the influence of tobacco on affective and attentional mechanisms. The objective of this study was to examine affective and attentional responses in young adult smokers using fear-potentiated startle and prepulse inhibition.
METHODS: Participants were 56 college nonsmokers, nonabstinent smokers, and overnight-abstinent smokers. The fear-potentiated startle test examined phasic responses to imminent threat cues and more sustained responses to unpredictable aversive events. Prepulse inhibitio

RATIONALE: Novelty associated with behavioral testing has been shown to enhance psychostimulant- and morphine-induced locomotor stimulation. Evidence has demonstrated that novelty increases dopamine (DA) activity, and habituation to a novel environment reduces such activation. However, it is not clear whether novelty modulates ethanol-induced behavioral stimulation and whether DA plays a role in this effect.
OBJECTIVES: The present work sought to demonstrate a role of habituation to test procedure as a factor that could modulate the involvement of DA in ethanol-induced locomotor stimulation.

Adaptation to motion can produce effects on both the perceived motion (the motion aftereffect) and the position (McGraw, Whitaker, Skillen, & Chung, 2002; Nishida & Johnston, 1999; Snowden, 1998; Whitaker, McGraw, & Pearson, 1999) of a subsequently viewed test stimulus. The position shift can be interpreted as a consequence of the motion aftereffect. For example, as the motion within a stationary aperture creates the impression that the aperture is shifted in position (De Valois & De Valois, 1991; Hayes, 2000; Ramachandran & Anstis, 1990), the motion aftereffect may generate a shift in perceiv

Motor incoordination is frequently used as a behavioral index of intoxication by drugs that depress the central nervous system. Two tasks that have been used to assay incoordination in mice, the balance beam and the grid test, were evaluated to optimize aspects of apparatus and testing procedures for studying genetic differences. Mice of eight inbred strains were given one of several doses of ethanol or saline and tested for intoxication. Strains differed in sensitivity to ethanol in both tests, indicating a significant influence of genotype on ethanol sensitivity. For the balance beam, the wi

Our preliminary observations on a small group of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients indicated a change in the non-nociceptive, tactile sensory function in BMS and provided evidence for the hypothesis of a neuropathic etiology of BMS. In the present clinical study on a group of 52 BMS patients, we used quantitative sensory tests (QST) in addition to the blink reflex (BR) recordings in order to gain further insight into the neural mechanisms of BMS pain. Based on electrophysiologic findings, the BMS patients could be grouped into four different categories: (1) The results of the BR were sugge

OBJECTIVES: Cortical potentials evoked by carbon dioxide laser pulses have been applied in clinical practice to study nociceptive pathways for several years. In this study, we evaluate the properties of an infrared laser (thulium-YAG) with a penetration depth in the skin that matches the intracutaneous depth of nociceptors.
METHODS: Temperature measurements and modelling showed that the thulium laser generates painful intracutaneous temperatures with less surface heating than the carbon dioxide laser and with no side effects (up to 600 mJ pulse energy). To develop clinical evaluation criteria

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In young animals, ischemic preconditioning protects CA1 hippocampal neurons against global ischemia. However, cerebral ischemia occurs most frequently in individuals aged >/=65 years. This study examined the protection provided by ischemic preconditioning in a population of aged (18- to 20-month-old) gerbils.
METHODS: One group of animals was exposed to two 1.5-minute episodes of global ischemia separated by 24 hours and followed 72 hours later by a 5-minute occlusion of both carotid arteries. A second group was given 2 episodes of preconditioning only. Two other group

Hydrational state has been demonstrated to influence intake of various solutions in young rat pups. For instance, both cellular and extracellular dehydration produce an enhancement of intake in pups tested at 6 days of age. However, the behavioral mechanisms that result in increased intake following manipulations of hydrational state have been less extensively studied. The impact of hydrational state on behavioral responsiveness in young rat pups was examined by assessing the pattern of responding to a series of repeated oral infusions of diet. Pups were tested at 6, 12, or 18 days of age foll

This study explored whether high- and low-intensity auditory stimuli evoke different facial electromyographic reactions and autonomic responses. Subjects were repeatedly exposed to 95-dB and 75-dB tones (1000 Hz, 40 ms rise and fall times) while their facial electromyograms from the corrugator and zygomatic muscle regions, heart rate, skin conductance responses, skin conductance half recovery time and ratings were measured. The 95-dB tone evoked a "negative" reaction with increased corrugator activity and an autonomic response pattern that carried aspects of a defense reaction, that is, slowly

The blink reflex and it's recovery cycle were studied in 26 patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and 10 controls. There was a significant increase in the mean duration of the R2 response. The amplitude of the R2 response following paired shocks (mean R2[T]/R2[C]%) was 11%, 40% and 52% of the conditioning stimulus with intervals of 200 ms, 500 ms and 1 second in the patients, compared with 10%, 17% and 32% respectively in the controls. Half the patients, however, had normal recovery cycles and voluntary suppression of tics and blinks reduced the amplitude of R2 in all patients. These re
