Eating disorders "mental health literacy" in low risk, high risk and symptomatic women: implications for health promotion programs.

Attitudes and beliefs concerning the nature and treatment of bulimia nervosa (BN) were compared among young adult women at low risk of an eating disorder (n = 332), at high risk (n = 83), or already showing symptoms (n = 94). Participants completed a self-report questionnaire that included a measure of eating disorder symptoms. A vignette of a fictional person suffering from BN was presented, followed by a series of questions addressing the nature and treatment of the problem described. High-risk and symptomatic participants were more likely than low-risk participants to report that they would

AI health literacy as a foundation for responsible AI in healthcare: a framework for trustworthy implementation.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming how healthcare is delivered, but there is mounting evidence revealing a critical gap between technical sophistication and the human capacity to deploy, interpret, and govern these systems responsibly. Current ethical AI frameworks emphasize fairness, transparency, and accountability but they miss a foundational prerequisite: stakeholder AI literacy. OBJECTIVE: This paper proposes a conceptual framework positioning digital health literacy, specifically AI-augmented health literacy, as the measurable literacy competencies among cl…

Patterns of multimorbidity and their association with edentulism: the moderating role of health literacy in the Lifelines Cohort.

Multimorbidity may affect oral health, especially in individuals with limited health literacy (HL), or specific multimorbidity patterns; however, evidence remains scarce. Understanding these associations could improve early detection and prevention, both in clinical care and public health strategies. This study aimed to assess the association of multimorbidity and multimorbidity patterns with complete tooth loss, i.e. edentulism, and whether HL moderates this association. A total of 42 357 participants from the prospective multigenerational Dutch Lifelines Cohort Study were included. Multimorb…

However, the behavioral mechanisms linking digital health literacy to quality of life in epilepsy remain unclear. This study aimed to examine whether self-management mediates the relationship between digital health literacy and quality of life in adults with epilepsy. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 143 adults with epilepsy completed the eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEA…

The Role of Health Literacy in Cardiometabolic Disease among People with Serious Mental Illness.

OBJECTIVE: People with serious mental illness (SMI) face higher morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Low health literacy (HL) is a risk factor for CVD, but the relationship between HL and CVD is understudied in people with SMI. This study examined the association between HL and (1) prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and (2) risk and prevalence of CVD in people with SMI. METHODS: Participants with diagnosed SMI were enrolled in this cross-sectional study at a behavioral health agency (N = 140). HL was measured using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) and partic…

Addressing the crises of declining vaccination rates and measles resurgence by promoting health literacy.

Pediatric vaccination rates are declining in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting decreases in immunization coverage against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP), polio, and varicella. The recent measles outbreaks have resulted in tragic outcomes, highlighting the urgent need for clinician concern and proactive measures to prevent illness, hospitalizations, missed school and caregiver workdays, and deaths. According to the World Health Organization, MMR vaccination rates below 95% compromise herd immunity,

Health literacy and biosimilar acceptance in people with multiple sclerosis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Biosimilar therapies represent a key strategy to improve sustainability and access to high-cost biologic treatments in multiple sclerosis (MS). Despite robust evidence supporting their efficacy and safety, patient resistance to biosimilar use and switching persists, often driven by informational gaps, patients’ health literacy processes, and nocebo-related mechanisms. While healthcare professionals play a central role in patient education, the specific contribution of nursing professionals, particularly MS nurses, remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate knowledge, attit…
