BACKGROUND Dermatomyositis is an autoimmune disease characterized by distinctive skin changes, muscle involvement, and, in many cases, damage to various organs, such as interstitial lung disease, arthritis, and myocarditis. The association between dermatomyositis and malignancies is well established. The most common cancers that manifest with a dermatomyositis are neoplasms of the breast, lungs, cervix, and gastrointestinal tract. Primary biliary cirrhosis is a slowly progressive autoimmune disease characterized by a triad of chronic cholestasis, positive specific autoantibodies, and character

CONDITION OVERVIEW: Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) refers to age-associated expansion of somatic variants in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC).
DIAGNOSIS: CH of indeterminate potential (CHIP) is operationally defined as pathogenic variants in HSPCs at a variant allele frequency ≥2%.
CLINICAL ASSOCIATIONS: CH is associated with increased occurrence of several hematological conditions such as cytopenias (also called clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance), hematological (predominantly myeloid but also lymphoid) neoplasms, cytosis (including monocytosis), and non-hematological co

BACKGROUND Caseous calcification of the mitral annulus (CCMA) is an uncommon form of mitral annular calcification and can be misdiagnosed as heart abscess, neoplasm, or other lesions occupying the atrioventricular groove. Data regarding imaging follow-up of patients with CCMA are limited. This report presents a case of CCMA with a 3-year imaging follow-up. CASE REPORT A 66-year-old asymptomatic woman was referred to our cardiology department for further evaluation of a rapidly expanding intracardiac mass observed using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in an outpatient setting. A neoplasm w

BACKGROUND: Intracardiac tumors are rare neoplasms that present with clinical features of obstruction, embolization, conduction disturbances, and constitutional symptoms. Complete surgical resection under cardiopulmonary bypass offers the best prospect of disease-free survival.
METHODS: Data of 30 consecutive patients who underwent resection of an intracardiac mass at St. Vincent's Hospital from 1990 to 2012 were reviewed.
RESULTS: The patients presented with dyspnea (33%), palpitations or arrhythmias (20%), and recurrent pulmonary edema (6%). There was a history of embolic stroke in 46%. In

Introduction. Primitive malignant heart tumours are rare, specific cases. The presence of cardiac metastases, often in the pericardium, besides indicating disseminated oncological disease, represents a diagnostic challenge since they tend to be asymptomatic. Malignant cutaneous melanoma (MCM) is the neoplasm that most often affects the heart. Patients and Methods. The authors describe a case report of a 59-year-old female patient with a history of non-insulin-treated diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, and remitting cutaneous malignant melanoma who underwent skin excision,

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate years of life lost for citizens of the Lodz Province, which is characterized by the lowest life expectancy in Poland, and to identify current trends in this area according to the most common causes of death.
METHODS: The study material included a database containing information gathered from 470,000 death certificates of Lodz Province inhabitants, who died between 1999 and 2011. In order to calculate years of life lost, the authors applied the SEYLLp (Standard Expected Years of Life Lost per living person) and SEYLLd (per death) indices. The analysis

Course, prognosis and mortality in Japanese elderly diabetes mellitus were studied using a 7 year follow-up study of 424 elderly diabetics whose ages were 60 years old or more (mean age: 72.6 +/- 6.2, 144 males: 280 females) at baseline. The relationships between clinical findings at baseline and prognosis, causes of death and onset of ischemic heart disease during the follow-up period were also studied. A total of 133 (31%) deaths were observed during the follow-up period. Risk factors present at baseline which significantly influenced the patients' prognosis included age, male gender, previo

BACKGROUND: Papillary renal neoplasm with reversed polarity is a rare entity, with its latest definition established only in 2019. Given its rarity, with less than 100 reported cases, further characterization is needed to enhance diagnostic accuracy and inform management strategies.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case in a 64-year-old Chinese male with an incidentally discovered a size of 5.2cm×4.0cm left renal mass on imaging. The patient has a medical history of coronary heart disease and left lower limb numbness. Further evaluation via contrast-enhanced CT confirmed that a nodular slightly

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm characterized by plasma cell proliferation in blood and bone marrow. Approximately two-thirds of the patients with multiple myeloma are >65 years at the time of diagnosis. Patients in this age group often have co-existing cardiovascular diseases. Areas covered: The presence of multiple myeloma adds to the malady by direct deposition of amyloid protein in the heart or via toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. Cardiac contractile dysfunction, arrhythmias and thromboembolic disorders are the main issues in the management of elderly patients with multiple my

An 8-year-old spayed female Munsterlander was evaluated for a chronic low grade fever and a two month history of exercise intolerance. On physical examination, tachycardia and a grade II/VI right systolic heart murmur were detected. Echocardiography revealed marked thickening of the atrial and ventricular walls with mixed echogenicity and concentric hypertrophy of the left and right ventricles and equivocal systolic dysfunction. Serum cardiac troponin I level was markedly elevated. Endomyocardial biopsy was attempted; however, the patient arrested during the procedure and resuscitation was uns

Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon neoplasm of serosal surfaces, such as the pleura, the peritoneum, less frequently pericardium and tunica vaginalis. It usually spreads locally to the lungs and mediastinum. We describe a case of malignant mesothelioma with metastasis to the heart. The patient presented with syncope, chest pain and light-headedness. He was found to have wide complex ventricular tachycardia (Vtach). He was cardioverted and then noted to have multiple (more than 20) similar episodes during the hospital course. He was treated with multiple antiarrhythmic medications. A CT scan

Inflammatory pseudotumor is a rare benign neoplasm. It is common in children and has been reported in various locations throughout the body but rarely in the heart. Behçet's disease is a multisystemic, recurrent, inflammatory disorder. We report a 35-year-old Behçet's disease patient with pseudotumor of the right ventricle and multiple pulmonary emboli. Transthoracic echocardiography showed dilation of right atrium, right ventricle, and a mass in the right ventricle. Multislice computed tomography revealed a large, poorly defined mass infiltrating the groove and multiple pulmonary emboli. Surg

Cardiac solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are extremely rare, with only 4 cases described to date. Here, we describe the case of a 55-year-old man with a primary, malignant SFT that arose in the right atrium of his heart. His presenting complaint was of chest distress and shortness of breath. Physical examination revealed jugular venous engorgement. Computed tomography showed a tumor of 15 × 10 × 8 cm in the anterior mediastinum. The tumor was surgically resected under cardiopulmonary bypass. A grayish white neoplasm was discovered lying within the right atrium. The histological appearance of the

A total of 973 50-year-old men, randomly selected from the general population in Göteborg, Sweden, were invited to a survey in 1963. Altogether 855 men (88%) participated. They have been followed up for 13.5 years, and this report presents mortality and morbidity during this time in relation to BP at the time of the initial examination. BP was strongly associated with mortality regardless of its cause. This was due to a close relation of BP to mortality from ischaemic heart disease and a weak but significant relation to mortality from cancer. BP was also strongly related to morbidity from myoc

BACKGROUND: Pericardial neoplastic involvement is rarely related to primary tumors of the pericardium and is most often caused by spread from other primary sites, such as lung and breast carcinomas, hematological malignancies (lymphoma and leukemia), and melanoma. Although pericardial metastasis from infradiaphragmatic tumors (such as colon cancers) are rare and poorly described in literature, any neoplasm has the potential to metastasize to the pericardium and heart by either contiguity, lymphatic, or hematological spread.

An 82-year-old woman with precordial pain at rest was admitted to the Emergency Department for possible cardiac heart disease; electrocardiogram excluded ischemia and high-sensitive troponin was normal. Echocardiogram revealed a hyperechoic mass adjacent to the mitral annulus. Electrocardiography-gated computed tomography (CT) angiography exam confirmed the presence of the mass protruding into the atrioventricular groove, adjacent to the posterior mitral. On the precontrast images the lesion was hyperdense with some scattered central calcific spots. CT findings are typical of a giant caseous c

We report a case of giant solitary fibrous tumor( SFT) of the pleura postoperatively complicated with probable reexpansion pulmonary edema and atrial fibrillation. An 85-year-old woman was diagnosed to have a 13 cm sized intrathoracic neoplasm. Upon thoracotomy, the tumor was found to pedunculate from the right lung with no direct invasion to the surrounding structures. Complete resection of the tumor and expansion of the right lung was obtained. Histopathology revealed the tumor was a benign SFT arising from the visceral pleura. An infiltrative shadow in the right lower lung field soon after

BACKGROUND: Penile cancer is a relatively uncommon cancer in developed nations. Metastatic disease is rare, but lymphatic or vascular spreading has been previously reported to the liver, lungs, bones, brain, heart and skin.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 49-year-old white man with a penile squamous cell carcinoma previously treated with partial penectomy and bilateral inguinal lymph node dissection, followed by adjuvant therapy. Three years after treatment, the primitive neoplasm metastasized to the breast, presenting as a painful lump. Differentials of a secondary versus a malignan

Spindle cell sarcomas of the right atrium are extremely rare primary cardiac tumours with very few cases reported in the medical literature. The prognosis of this malignant neoplasm remains poor due to delay in diagnosis, early metastasis and few available therapeutic options. It responds poorly to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment. We report a 42-year-old man, who presented to emergency room with dyspnoea and fatigue (New York Heart Association classification II) since 1 month. Transthoracic echocardiogram showed massive pericardial effusion with ta
