The importance of H2S as a physiological signaling molecule continues to develop, and ion channels are emerging as a major family of target proteins through which H2S exerts many actions. The purpose of the present study was to investigate its effects on T-type Ca(2+) channels. Using patch-clamp electrophysiology, we demonstrate that the H2S donor, NaHS (10 μM-1 mM) selectively inhibits Cav3.2 T-type channels heterologously expressed in HEK293 cells, whereas Cav3.1 and Cav3.3 channels were unaffected. This paper deals with the problem of fatal accidents that occur repeatedly in "confined spaces", with particular attention to exposure to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are used to obtain the activation enthalpy and preexponential factor for the lattice diffusion of hydrogen in aluminum between the temperatures 650 and 850 K: DeltaH double dagger=0.12+/-0.02 eV and D0=1.8 x 10(-7)m2/s. Vacancies are found to significantly decrease the apparent diffusivity due to their ability to bind one, two, or even six hydrogen atoms, causing a strong composition dependence and non-Arrhenius behavior of the effective diffusion coefficient.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) intoxication causes or contributes significantly to many of the fatalities among fire victims. To enable fast treatment of HCN poisoning, a more rapid diagnostic method than currently available is required. One possibility would be measurement in exhaled air. Hydrogen peroxide is a widely available disinfectant that has been reported to cause colitis. We report a case of a 67-year-old man who presented with an acute proctitis caused by a self-inflicted 3% hydrogen peroxide enema. The patient's intention was to cure himself of a recently diagnosed prostate cancer, because the waiting list for oncological consultation was deemed too long. The pathogenesis of hydrogen peroxide mucosal injury and a review of the literature is discussed.

Ideas prevailing in 1991 on hydrogen peroxide in the aqueous humor are outlined. They are critically examined under the light of our finding that the method used to establish aqueous humor levels of peroxide generates itself peroxide during the short time span of the analysis.
