Spontaneous regression of bilateral hydronephrosis due to retroperitoneal fibrosis.

The case was a 73-year-old male who presented with bilateral hydronephrosis due to retroperitoneal fibrosis. Later he became anuric and nephrostomy was constructed. However, with no medical treatment, the hydronephrosis disappeared. Such a spontaneous regression is rare and the etiology is discussed.

Postnatal outcome and natural history of antenatally-detected hydronephrosis.

Routine maternal ultrasonography (US) has revealed a very high incidence of fetal hydronephrosis (HDN), the postnatal outcome and management protocols of which are replete with controversies. Pelviureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction is the commonest postnatal diagnosis, and its management has no consensus to date. This study was carried out to define the postnatal outcome and natural history of fetal HDN and to identify the mode of management to be adopted to the best advantage. All patients were subjected to US 48 h postnatally or at first presentation and isotope renography (DTPA) with nucle…

49,XXXXY syndrome with hydronephrosis caused by intravesical ureterocele.

A 1-month-old boy was referred to our hospital with right hydronephrosis. Excretory urography showed poor visualization of the right kidney and a filling defect in the bladder. Chromosomal analysis of peripheral blood revealed a karyotype of 49,XXXXY, and a diagnosis of 49,XXXXY Klinefelter s syndrome associated with hydronephrosis caused by intravesical ureterocele was made. 49,XXXXY Klinefelter s syndrome with anomalies of the urinary tract is extremely rare, and only 2 cases have been reported so far.

Does every patient with prenatal hydronephrosis need voiding cystourethrography?

PURPOSE: Prenatal ultrasound has allowed early identification of urinary tract abnormalities that may require urological followup or early intervention. While all children with prenatal hydronephrosis should undergo ultrasound within the first few weeks of life, we believe that there is a subset of postnatal hydronephrosis for which voiding cystourethrography can be avoided if careful observation is continued. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For 5 years 175 infants with a history of prenatal hydronephrosis were evaluated by ultrasound. Of 60 infants with less than Society for Fetal Urology grade II un…

[Long-term surgical treatment results for hydronephrosis in children].

The aim of this paper is assessment the results of surgical treatment for hydronephrosis in 208 children, who were operated during the last 32 years. The most frequent surgical procedure (90.4%) was Anderson-Hynese method. The good results were obtained on an average in 91.8% to cases. The advantageous risk factors of operations were: female sex, age up to 1 year, the absence of other congenital anomalies and 2 degrees grade of hydronephrosis. Kidney dysfunction before the operation, kidney scintigraphy up to 25% capture or corticorenal index above 0.062% had unfavourable influence on the resu…

MP84 expression in pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis kidney biopsy sections.

MP84 is a novel antigen expressed in the primary glomerulonephritis kidney biopsy section and stimulated mesangial cells and matrix but not in the normal kidney and other tissue sections or any other cell lines tested except Bewo choriocarcinoma cell line. This is the first report of MP84 expression in pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis kidney sections. The distribution of the antigen is different from the primary glomerulonephritis kidney sections studied previously such as membranous, minimal change, focal and segmental, and IgA nephropathy. This may have an important correlation with the pat…

[Blind-ending bifid ureter associated with adult congenital hydronephrosis].

We present a case of cephalad blind-ending bifid ureter coexisting with adult congenital hydronephrosis that had not clinically manifested previously and had been incidentally detected during surgery. The possibility that both anomalies of development may be related etiopathogenically is discussed. This and other malformations should be sought during the preoperative evaluation of a patient with congenital hydronephrosis.

[Hydronephrosis and ureteropelvic junction syndrome. Apropos of 93 cases].

So called "congenital" hydronephrosis, a relatively frequent condition, is increasingly benefiting from modern investigative techniques such as ultrasound. This should enable a reduction in the time interval between clinical symptomatology and treatment. In a series of 93 cases, the authors demonstrate that pathological anatomy is of little value as regards etiology, while plastic surgery of the pyelo-ureteral junction still remains the most simple and reliable treatment with a low associated morbidity.

[Hydronephrosis caused by enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes in sarcoidosis].

The diagnosis of sarcoidosis was made in a 40-year-old man when, in addition to enlarged mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes (sarcoidosis I), he also had peripheral lymph node enlargement. Pulmonary infiltrations (sarcoidosis II) developed subsequently. Three years after diagnosis pulmonary symptoms first became manifest, at the same time as pain in the kidney region. The urogram revealed hydronephrosis caused by enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes (CT scan). After treatment with corticosteroids the urogram was normal.

[Two cases of congenital hydronephrosis discovered by renal trauma].

Two cases of congenital hydronephrosis discovered by renal trauma are reported. The first case was a 15-year-old girl. When she was practicing KENDO, her Hakama clung to her legs, and she tumbled. She had emergency operation for abdominal injury. At surgery, no evidence of abdominal injury was detected. Renal trauma was suspected. Right renal angiography revealed hydronephrosis. The second case was a 23-year-old girl, complaining of abdominal pain after stumbling over a block. Intravenous pyelography showed no visualization of the right kidney and CT scan showed an abnormal shadow. Retrograde …

Prenatal diagnosis of unilateral hydronephrosis with early postnatal reconstruction.

Real-time ultrasound systems, being used extensively now in obstetrical practice for fetal monitoring, are providing the urologist with more opportunities for early recognition and intervention of congenital hydronephrosis. Thorough postnatal investigation to confirm a diagnosis is advocated. An early postnatal surgical repair can be performed successfully.

Severe hydronephrosis and severe renal cystic disease: ultrasonic differentiation.

End-stage renal cystic disease and severe hydronephrosis may reveal similar ultrasonographic findings. A "blind analysis" of 13 cases selected on the basis of smiliar extensive end-stage disease (little or no renal parenchyma visualized) was performed. The identification of a dilated renal pelvis was the most reliable ultrasonographic indicator of hydronephrosis. If the renal pelvis cannot be identified, renal cystic disease is the most likely diagnosis. All eight cases of hydronephrosis were correctly identified in this fashion. Four of five cases of severe cystic disease were correctly diagn…

Benign ureteral lesions: rare causes of hydronephrosis in children.

Three unusual cases of hydronephrosis in children secondary to ureteral lesions, (1) congenital abnormality and (2) due to benign tumor, are presented. The radiographic findings and management are discussed. Conservative surgical management is suitable for these lesions.

Crossed, fused renal ectopia with severe hydronephrosis: angiographic diagnosis.

The authors describe two children with crossed, fused renal ectopia in whom severely damaged hydronephrotic ectopic kidneys were not shown by intravenous urography. Aortography confirmed the diagnosis in both patients. Aortography is of great value if a diseased ectopic kidney must be resected; demonstration of the vascular supply to both kidneys enables the surgeon to preserve all of the normal renal tissue.
