Agricultural solid waste for sorption of metal ions: part I-characterization and use of lettuce roots and sugarcane bagasse for Cu(II), Fe(II), Zn(II), and Mn(II) sorption from aqueous medium.

Sugarcane bagasse and hydroponic lettuce roots were used as biosorbents for Cu(II), Fe(II), Zn(II), and Mn(II) removal from monoelemental solutions in aqueous medium, at pH 5.5, using batch procedures. These biomasses were studied in natura (lettuce roots, NLR, and sugarcane bagasse, NSB) and modified with HNO3 (lettuce roots, MLR, and sugarcane bagasse, MSB). Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich non-linear isotherm models were used to evaluate the data from the metal ion adsorption assessment. The maximum adsorption capacities (qmax) in monoelemental solution, calculated using the L

Effect of Pb-resistant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria inoculation on growth and lead uptake by Lathyrus sativus.

In search of efficient and resistant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains with multiple activities, a total of twelve bacterial belonging to R. leguminosarum, S. meliloti, Pseudomonas sp., P. fluorescens, Luteibacter sp., Variovorax sp., B. simplex, and B. megaterium were isolated from root nodules of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) grown in contaminated soils. Upon screening, all test strains were able to synthesize indoleacetic acid; more than 90% were siderophore producers and 75% showed varying levels of phosphate solubilizing ability. The gaseous metabolite biosynthesis sho

Glutamine synthetase activity in leaves of Zea mays L. as influenced by magnesium status.

The total capacity of the GS-mediated ligation of free ammonium and glutamate to form glutamine in the leaves of maize plants is not impaired upon severe magnesium starvation. Magnesium deficiency does not obligatorily lead to the decreased total protein concentrations in the leaves. Magnesium (Mg) is an integral component of the enzyme glutamine synthetase (GS), having both a structural and a catalytic role. Moreover, Mg is relevant for the post-translational regulation of the GS. Glutamine synthetase is one of the key enzymes in nitrogen assimilation, ligating-free ammonium (NH4 (+)) to glut

2'-Deoxymugineic acid promotes growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.) by orchestrating iron and nitrate uptake processes under high pH conditions.

Poaceae plants release 2'-deoxymugineic acid (DMA) and related phytosiderophores to chelate iron (Fe), which often exists as insoluble Fe(III) in the rhizosphere, especially under high pH conditions. Although the molecular mechanisms behind the biosynthesis and secretion of DMA have been studied extensively, little information is known about whether DMA has biological roles other than chelating Fe in vivo. Here, we demonstrate that hydroponic cultures of rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings show almost complete restoration in shoot height and soil-plant analysis development (SPAD) values after treatm

Isoprene emission and primary metabolism in Phragmites australis grown under different phosphorus levels.

Aquatic plants are generally used for wastewater purification and phytoremediation, but some of them also emit large amounts of isoprene, the most abundant biogenic volatile organic compound. Since isoprenoid biosynthesis requires high amounts of phosphorylated intermediates, the emission may also be controlled by inorganic phosphorus concentration (Pi) in leaves. We carried out experiments to determine the emission of isoprene from Phragmites australis plants used in reconstructed wetlands to phytoremediate elevated levels of phosphorus contributed by urban wastes. Four groups of plants were

Cadmium and manganese accumulation in Phytolacca americana L. and the roles of non-protein thiols and organic acids.

Phytolacca americana L. can accumulate large amounts of heavy metals in its aerial tissues, especially cadmium (Cd) and manganese (Mn). It has great potential for use in phytoextraction of metals from multi-metal-contaminated soils. This study was conducted to further investigate the Cd- and Mn-tolerance strategies of this plant. Concentrations of non-protein thiols (NPTs) and phytochelatins (PCs) in leaves and roots increased significantly as the concentration of Cd in solution increased. The molar ratios of PCs:soluble Cd ranged from 1.8 to 3.6 in roots and 8.1 to 31.6 in leaves, suggesting

Contrasting physiological-biochemical responses and elemental homeostasis in Pinus sylvestris families exposed to As, Cd and Pb.

Contamination with As, Cd and Pb can limit tree establishment on degraded substrates, but family-level variation in Scots pine responses remains poorly resolved. This study evaluated three open-pollinated maternal half-sib families of Pinus sylvestris L. under controlled hydroponic exposure to As, Cd and Pb. Growth, photosynthetic pigments, soluble sugars, phenolic and flavonoid contents, malondialdehyde, antioxidant enzyme activities, elemental composition and metal(loid) accumulation indices were analysed, with PCA and Random Forest used as exploratory integrative tools. Molecular insights into Acinetobacter calcoaceticus JK40-mediated zinc availability and transporter gene modulation in rice.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a critical edaphic constraint that limits the productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.). This study examined the mechanistic effectiveness of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus JK40 (Ac-NAU-JK40), a zinc-solubilizing bacterium (ZSB) isolated from the rice rhizosphere. Notably, JK40 was selected for this study due to its dual ability to solubilize both zinc (Zn) and phosphate (P), a trait believed to prevent P-induced Zn precipitation in the rhizosphere. In hydroponic assays, co-inoculation of Ac-NAU-JK40 with insoluble ZnO significantly improved morphological traits (shoot length

Root sequestration and antioxidant defense underpin cadmium tolerance in Arundo donax under contrasting Cd concentrations.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination poses a persistent threat to plant growth and environmental safety, yet plant responses to contrasting Cd exposure remain insufficiently understood. Here, Arundo donax seedlings were hydroponically exposed to low (0.1 mM) and high (1.0 mM) Cd stress. Physiological responses were evaluated after 14 d, while transcriptomic profiling at 3 d was used to characterize early molecular responses. Total chlorophyll content decreased by 30.5% and 63.9% under low and high Cd, respectively, and high Cd reduced major gas-exchange parameters by more than 50%. High Cd increased O2•

Rubisco overexpression in rice hampers photosynthetic performance under P deficiency.

Although Rubisco overexpression enhances productivity of some plant species, wild-type plants of these species do not accumulate Rubisco to such high levels, possibly due to associated disadvantages. As the utilization of inorganic phosphate in photosynthesis appeared to be disturbed in Rubisco-overexpressing rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants, we examined the effects of P deficiency on their photosynthetic performance. The severity of P deficiency was adjusted by varying the duration of the treatment in hydroponic culture. Rubisco-overexpressing plants exhibited a 1.2-1.4-fold overproduction of Ru

A simple method for preparing novel biochar with Fe-N bonds and porous structure: Towards phosphate adsorption.

In this study, a magnetic iron-nitrogen co-doped adsorbent (Fe/N-KBC) with a high specific surface area was successfully prepared through the simple co-pyrolysis of municipal sludge and modifiers (potassium ferrate, urea, and potassium chloride). The activation effect of K+ ions effectively enhanced the pore structure, while co-doping with iron and nitrogen facilitated the formation of Fe-N bonds, thereby improving both the adsorption rate and selectivity for phosphate. It exhibited a magnetic saturation value of 16.37 emu/g, enabling convenient magnetic separation. Even in the presence of coe

Synergistic effects of irregular PET microplastics and cadmium on cucumber seedlings revealed by LA-ICP-MS imaging.

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are widespread environmental contaminants. Their co-exposure may pose greater risks to plants than either pollutant alone. Since their toxicity depends on tissue-specific distribution, precise imaging of both in plant tissues is critical for uncovering toxicity mechanisms. In this study, we used LA-ICP-MS imaging to investigate the effects of irregular polyethylene terephthalate (PET) MPs of ca. 200 nm labeled by europium chelate, spherical polystyrene (PS) MPs and cadmium (Cd), on cucumber seedlings. Following hydroponic exposure to 20 mg/L MPs, or in comb

PFAS uptake by lettuce: Roles of PFAS properties, co-present organic acids, and nanoplastics.

The accumulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food crops poses a significant food safety and human health risk, yet studies on the accumulation of PFAS in food crops in conditions that more realistically represent a growth environment with various co-occurring chemicals are still lacking. This study investigated the accumulation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) by lettuce in a hydroponic system in the co-presence of polystyrene nanoplastics (NPs, 300 nm) and/or three prevalent organic acids [hum

Lipidomics reveals divergent root and shoot responses to combined nitrogen deficiency and heat stress.

INTRODUCTION: Soybean productivity is highly sensitive to heat and insufficient nitrogen supply, stresses that can occur simultaneously. However, organ-specific lipid responses to this stress combination remain poorly resolved. METHODS: We exposed hydroponically grown soybean plants to nitrogen deficiency, heat stress (HS) and their combination and compared physiological, lipidomic and gene-expression responses in roots and leaves. RESULTS: Combined stress caused the largest reductions in biomass and photosynthetic performance and the highest H₂O₂ and MDA accumulation and relative total abun

Urease-null soybean (eu3-a) under salt and copper stress: nitrogen metabolism, antioxidant defense, and arginine pathway genes.

The eu3-a mutant exhibited greater tolerance to salt stress but increased sensitivity to copper stress, with distinct impacts on nitrogen metabolism, photosynthesis, and antioxidant responses. The eu3-a soybean mutant is urease-null, lacking all urease activity responsible for catalyzing the hydrolysis of urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. In this study, the urease-null eu3-a soybean mutant was used to assess the saline and copper stresses on nitrogen metabolism. Seeds of eu3-a/eu3-a and the corresponding dominant homozygous Eu3 precursor line were collectively referred to as near-isogenic

Highway to stress: Proline dynamics in tomato plants under osmotic disturbances.

Upon exposure to osmotic stress, plants accumulate proline, an osmoprotectant and antioxidant, often associated with stress tolerance. However, recent studies suggest that proline buildup does not necessarily improve the redox status or stress resilience in plant tissues, being instead perceived as a sign of sensitivity. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate how plants coordinate proline accumulation and metabolism during osmotic stress and subsequent recovery. A bifactorial experimental design was conducted using tomato plants in a semi-hydroponic system. Tissue samples were collected in t

Influence of polystyrene nanoplastics on the uptake and distribution of potentially toxic elements in tomato plants investigated using isotopic tracers.

This study evaluated the impact of 200 nm polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics (NPs) on the uptake and distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), in hydroponically grown tomato plants. To distinguish naturally occurring PTEs from those taken up by the plants from nutrient solutions, enriched isotopic tracers were used, while europium (Eu)-labelled PS NPs enabled following the presence of NPs in plant tissues via ICP-MS analysis. After accounting for Eu leaching, intact PS-Eu NP concentrations were highest in roots and decreased

Foliar-Applied EDTA-Zn Reduces Grain Cd Content in Triticum aestivum L. Grown in Alkaline Fields with Cd Contamination by Regulating Vascular Bundle-Mediated Transport and Sequestration of Cd in Nodes and Rachises.

Foliar application of zinc (Zn) compounds is a promising strategy for mitigating cadmium (Cd) accumulation in wheat grains in pot experiments. However, its inconsistent field efficacy, especially in alkaline soils with long-term Cd contamination, poses a unique challenge. Herein, field experiments and demonstrations were conducted at three sites across four wheat-growing winter seasons to evaluate the efficacy of foliar Zn application in reducing grain Cd accumulation in typical Cd-contaminated alkaline soils. Foliar application of EDTA-Zn at the booting and milk stages increased grain yield b
